The Royal Navy of Nelson’s era was world renowned for its skill at seamanship and gunnery. Some captains would pay for extra shot and powder in order to train their men. Nelson prided himself one having the most skilled seamen afloat, and at Trafalgar British vessels fire their guns half as fast again as the French and Spanish, some crews able to fire, load, run out and fire in as little as two or three minutes, a true testament to the ethos instilled in the fleet.
Ignoring all the craziness with regard to how chain-shot really works, I'll just point out a missed tactical opportunity. At about 1:08:30, when the little ship in front of the French frigate activates, it was at light sails. The cool move would have been to drop anchor and rake the bow with the anchored bonus.
Just watched the play through. I can hardly wait to get my ships finished and on the table. One observation. the French brigs went from anchored to battle sails in the first turn. But I thought you could only go up or down one level of sails in a turn
I dont mean to be off topic but does anybody know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account..? I was dumb forgot the account password. I would appreciate any tips you can give me.
@Kaiden Kyler thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and im trying it out atm. I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Nice game guys. Just one thing. I am pretty sure you need to preload a different round the turn before you use it, but since you both seemed cool about it it doesn’t matter
Can you not fire both port and starboard broadsides at the same time? I'm taking it that you can't as there were opportunities throughout where that would have been possible. Also, where did Gerry get the laser pointer? My Google-fu may be on the blink at the moment as I'm struggling to find one with a lens that presents a line and not just a dot or some random cat-bothering bullshit.
When can you select special ammo? When does it actual load? Also, isn’t there a skill check to shoot ships that are not the closest ship for the firing gun section?
I know that it's been a while since you posted this, but is it really true that Black Seas doesn't have different speeds for attitudes (to the wind) other than "becalmed"? That's a huge different from, say, Sails of Glory (or reality, for that matter).
They may in the advanced rules, but not that I am aware of. Like many of Warlord's games it is a gateway game. Much like how Richard Clarke of Too Fat Lardies says that the biggest boost for his Chain of Command game is Warlord's Bolt Action, as it gets players in the WWII door, and provides them with decent models. Some stick with BA, others want more grit and go to something else like CoC. I know Nick of Too Fat Lardies said he picked up some of Warlord's ships, so who knows, a Kiss Me Hardy II may come out if it gives him the sailing bug, and that may be more too your liking.
@@ostrowulf Hi. Thanks for the reply ... we seem to be set for three comments per year. :) In any event, in the meantime I ended up working up some rules of my own. Besides the need for wind attitude, ships seem to come about too quickly under most rules, and the ranges of different cannons were too similar. Yean, it's now more complicated, but I wanted to shift the strategy away from "dog-fighting with boats."
@@jheetoe-bee5711 currious what scale you went with. Also wondering if you were able to handle sailing reasonably accurately without making it over complicated. Did you end up using a gauge like Blood and Plunder?
@@ostrowulf I did everything twice: once for 1:700 and once for 1:1000. I own a mix of ships. As to whether it's overly complicated: if I'm honest, the answer is Yes. (This is also true for my version of D&D ... more realistic combat, but rather complicated.) For example, coming about is now the nightmare that it actually was. And, yes, it all involves attitude to the wind. Even more: because you dial in your before and after shooting movements in advance (which is sort of like Sails of Glory), you need to take your new attitude into account when planning the second-half move. But, to keep this from getting too much, you can also dial in "follow" for any ship in the line that isn't in front.
@@jheetoe-bee5711 I do find this concept interesting. However, having never been on a sailing vessel, nor played any non computer naval games I feel your solutions would likely go over my head.
this game looks very cool but ive just bought blood red skye so defo have to wait a bit before i get another game as ive got allot im playing at the min lol
I'm confused. If ordinary crew or green crew (I've yet to purchase the rules, and am watching this debating whether to pick it up or not) why didn't the French ships screen the Frigate that was loading the Soldiers? Had they stayed at anchor or moved into position and anchored, they could have shielded the Frigate whilest it loaded, gained a +1 bonus to hit their opponents. Toss in a +2 bonus for shooting at the rigging, and they could have perhaps gained some small advantage. Thus far, I kind of like what I'm seeing with these videos and am fighting the urge to plop money down for it! Nicely done Gents.
As much as I can appreciate the models as they are absolutely superb, I'm really put off by the rules. I was hoping the advanced rules would address my reservations but instead I'll be seeking something else. The fact that crew are tied into the hit points of the ship seems illogical, let alone the fact that chain shot is simply treated as "quadruple damage" instead of being guaranteed damage to the rigging if it hits. I understand Warlord like their games to be easy to pick and play which results in a loss of detail but the loss of detail in Black Seas is simply baffling.
"The modifier for aiming high is only -1 for chain shot (instead of the normal -2), and for any critical damage, roll twice on the Critical Table - High and choose which result to apply. However, the range of all guns are halved. If not aiming high chain shots have a -2 to hit." So if you crit you'll be able to go for the optimum damage result. The Critical Table - High is the most brutal of the two. You are able to cut through the mast with devastating results.
Lets not forget what Nelson said "Nevermind manoeuvres just go straight at them" Lance clearly subscribes to this school of though

Correct: Page 29; Any gun position
changing its ammunition cannot shoot during that Turn.
Your flags are facing the wrong way. 🙂
What is that laser pen thing that draws lines rather than just a dot that Gerry has?
I love beards. I love ships. Sing a shanty and I'll swing my hips.
damn, this game looks fun. Been playing GF9 tanks and GW Warcry... Black Seas is on a waiting list.

Yep you can, you just start taking -1's for the consecutive shots.
@@rodneip7077 Only for the third position and higher. Not for firing the first two positions.
@@ghostwolf4354 Thanks for the correction.

Changing ammo type means that position cannot fire that Turn?
cool scenario.
