I think the reason keimou was translated to insight is because it's just an absolutely incredible pun. So much so that I thought it was deliberately picked by Miyazaki. Insight is gained from having eyes on the inside of your skull in a bizarrely literal metaphor- insight then refers to that, because you're SEEING INSIDE your own head. in-sight.

One great one you forgot to mention is the Player in the true ending.
The player is turned into an Ocular nerve.

I'm absolutely engrossed with this series. From the medical history parallels to the shapes of the great ones. Blowing my MIND dude. I thought I knew all there was to know about BB, but this could be a doctorate thesis. By God.

"this is a doctorate" is constantly on my. and yeah I also came into this thinking I was well versed in the BB lore. then this guy completely broke new ground.

Because only those who really look for it will find it since it doesnt get promoted in any way. Because of Vati nobody knows about the good videos since every streamer or youtuber just watches those for lore after finishing the game and unfortunately his videos on BB are particularly bad since his main one doesnt even include the dlc because it wasnt released yet.
So swarm behavior and the youtube algorithm are your answer. Those who take their time to produce quality are simply too late to the party while Vati is getting all the traffic for rushing stuff.

I’ve been marathoning all of the videos the last day or so and I feel like I missed a connection somewhere (so I ask this with curiosity not snark): in the earlier videos I feel like the metaphor was that the beasts were a representation of addiction, which makes sense. But in the last several videos it seems like the beasts have been switched over to a metaphor or analogy for cadavers/surgical patients. The addiction metaphor made sense, and I kind of liked it in the sense that if blood vials/healing blood is an addictive property the player character continually injects himself with it to stave off the beastly scourge (those of us who’ve experienced addiction can relate to this struggle). But I’m not sure I’ve followed the beasts = cadavers analogy. What about being cadavers makes them beast like? I feel like I’m missing a step in this connection. Is it because to be a beast is to be inhuman or lack humanity, in the way some would see a cadaver as lacking its humanity?
Edit: My apologies, I’m revisiting the Cainhurst video and you addressed this there. Not sure how I missed that the first time! Thank you for this series, it’s been a fun watch as both a Bloodborne fan and a fan of history research (my Master’s study was on Victorian literature and I’ve always been really into reading about that period - the medical and anatomical stuff you’ve covered has largely been new for me though which has been a lot of fun to watch/listen to. Thanks for your hard work!)

Idk if anybody has said anything about the Blue Elixir yet. The game describes it as a "dubious medicine" used by Choir researchers. I'm not sure which medicine this alludes to, maybe Opium?
The Sedative item is another widely-recognized opiate of some sort. I don't know which one it's supposed to be, either, though.
This series popped up on my feed while I've been revisiting Bloodborne, and I can't believe how well you've nailed the medical history in this game. Nobody else has talked about it this in-depth. Kudos, sir

    Quick random observation...
@charredthermos - the transition/improvement occurred before this entry, but since its 5:40 a.m. and this is the vid I'm currently watching: the improvement/evolution you showed in vid quality as the series progressed is subtle, but apparent.
I noticed it most clearly in the sound. First couple of vids, I could clearly hear the "room sound" frequencies in the audio, along with occasional mic stand rattles that accompanied your script readings when you had a particular cadence/rhythm in mind for word delivery - helping yourself to punctuate and (to borrow a beatnick term) slam the main points of a final sentence in a paragraph - and the second half of the series basically had all of that cleaned up. Being a "spoken word" guy myself, and having done quite a few recording projects, it hit home, and if no one else has pointed out how your own craft in this medium grew and improved (not so much becoming more Vaati, but birthing THE Charred Thermos 🙂), I'd be glad to be the first.

Ha, those first few vids were, um, raw to put it mildly :) Definitely had to get a feel for using my cheap mic and editing audio better to avoid all the background noise and pops and whatnot. But to your point, yeah, it took a little time to develop a sort of rhythm and style. Thanks for noticing the gradual improvement on that front. I still marvel at people like Vaati who put together such polished products.

Playing some drums last night and was reminded that - not just in the musical realms, but all creative endeavors of craft - it is practice that makes perfect, and repetition that leads to memorization.
I've been playing drums for over 30 years, and like (or is that unlike 🙂) ZERO human beings before me, still haven't attained perfection... Yet somehow find it anyway again and again... Ever trying to bathe in that elusive now - the one that recognizes that even the flaws, the bleats and blast and mis-sticks, are a part of (for lack of a better term) it, and the ONLY way that beautiful moment we strive for ends... Is when we stop.

For your information posterity means 'for future Generations'
Both translations are the exact same except the English translation uses an 'Old English' kind of word that is actually still used to this date in America

This whole series is amazing so far. and the Cage headgear... Secret Sleepover Society poses a different reason for the cage, and I am immediately sorry (It's silly and not serious)
This entire series has made my day significantly better and I will play through Bloodborne again with this lens, the amount of work and research put into this is amazing. Thank you for putting this all together.

TA, who does basically the same tjing for Elden Ring. Calls what he is talking about as "magical realism" basically saying how the game's real world theme is shown literally in the setting and plot in the game. Like all of Elden Ring's arboreal metaphors like grafting and crown sprouting. That being said. Bloodborne takes victorian surgery into magical realism. This is how this guy and anyone who says that Lovecraft inspired Bloodborne are both 100% correct. This shows the complexity of Fromsoft's story design. Bloodborne's real world Theme is absolutely a metaphor for Victorian medicine, and its plot and setting are very heavily Lovcraftian and Eldritch. The Great Ones are just as truthfully physically inspired by anatomy as it is true that story wise, they are derived from Lovecraft's Great Old Ones. Just as it is true that Yharnam is stylistically based on Victorian Edinburgh Scotland, it is also named for Lovecraft's fictional city of Arkham Massachusetts. See what I mean. Fromsoftware often does this with their games. Dark Souls plot wise is about the cycles of fire and dark and our role in it. Dark Souls Thematically is based on Buddhist notions of the cycles of life. Bloodborne is a Eldritch tale of Lycanthropic monsters and Lovecraftian monstrosities with a theme of the history of surgery. Elden Ring is sprawling expanse of Medieval feudalism and Celtic myth with the themes of Alchemy and Botany.

Glad you're able to check out Part 2 of the Messengers videos now! Thanks for the words of support. I'm plugging away this week on the Laurence follow-up. I don't think I'll ever re-upload Part XII-C of the Agony series. It was kind of an off-the-cuff video that didn't have any major findings, and it just totally clashed with the vibe and presentation of everything I've ever done. The hot-garbage-ness of Part IV and the unpolished nature of Part XII-C merited their permanent demise and also confirmed that I should stick with my "style," goofy as that sounds.

    • @TheCharredThermos
      @TheCharredThermos  5 місяців тому +8

Thanks for checking it out. If this is the first video of mine you've seen, it's gonna seem pretty out of context. For sure, Lovecraft and cosmic horror were profound influences on the game's aesthetic and mechanics. I don't deny that. Those influences are already _extremely_ well documented elsewhere and for many years were the primary lens through which the lore community evaluated the game.
What I've argued in my projects is that the cosmic horror and specifically Lovecraftian influences, while easily visible, mask a much more embedded meaning of the game, which is revealed when we look at Bloodborne through its medical history influences. There are numerous scientific, historical and literary sources that shaped the game, which have a shared connection to anatomical research and surgery of the 1700s and 1800s in Great Britain.
