That AMX/3 is a gorgeous vehicle. I really miss my '70 Javelin, my only muscle car, with its 390, Borg T-10 close-ratio trans, and enough torque that it twisted the rear leaf springs enough for the car to crouch before slingshotting off in a cloud of rubber smoke. I rebuilt the engine and it was putting out roughly 425 horsepower and 425 ft/lbs of torque. It stuck to the ground like it was on tracks, and I'd slide passengers from side to side like a pinball in the back seat, before they could hold on. 'Twas my most favorite car of all time.
@@earthlingjohn U wish. Anyone know how Jeff passed? He was pretty young? My Aunt Louise was a Executive Secretary at the AMC Headquarters on Plymouth Rd in Detroit.....I grew up about 4 miles from there at 9051 Vaughan St, house is boarded up and abandoned now, saw it online.
Had to stop an do an internet search for that two-lever shifter assembly on that AMC Marlin and learned one of the levers controlled a manual overdrive, giving the Marlin 5 forward gears. Very interesting and quite ahead of its time. Always liked AMC cars, especially their Javelin/AMX series and drove a '66 Rambler for a couple years in the early 80s. Easy to work on and nearly indestructible.
I'm 66 now, been an AMC fan since seeing my first Javelin as a kid. I owned the 1968, 1970 and 1971 Javelins and the 1968 AMX. Truly excellent cars. The AMX/3 was awesome. I wish it had gone into production.
The shape sort-of made it onto the 1974 Matador Coupe, but to me it didn't work as well on that bigger car, and certainly not with the federal bumpers.

It is a shame that the union decided to strike just when AMC was not doing well. currently (today being 01/27/2020), the unions strike even though the car companies brought jobs back to the USA.
ah, Jeff. You were a young man when I meet you at the Bloomfield Hills house. Got shown your Dad's brass-era cars he loved so much at the time and the circa 1963 silver Ferrari Berlinetta. Had you Dad and Mom to 4 of my Kenosha year AMX club conventions. You Mom and Dad were always wonderful to me and I loved them both. Saw your Dad a summer before he passed. Saw your Mom with my wife Linda on vacation from Denver the next summer. You Dad gave me the car for an engine problem and paint in 1979.
Ok, add this to things to do when I graduate college and get a good job... 1 buy 71/72 AMX and restore it, then road trip cross-country with some friends to an all amc show like this. Love that AMX III. Wouldn't mind having one of the kit cars, built right!
I live in San Diego and I got. An opportunity the photo Dick Teage 's red MX3 at the San Diego Auto museum in Balboa Park ... I couldn't believe my eyes that the car was a AMX /3 let alone that that car once was Dick Teague's car!!!
AMC made great cars that were affordable. My first car was a used 1972 AMC Hornet. It had an unkillable straight six. Wish I still owned it. AMC was a great car company.
I had a buddy in HS here in Kenosha that had a 69 AMX, red w/white stripes, 390 and I think he called it a shark tooth hood. That kid knew where every AMX was in townLOL Behind houses, in barns, all over the place. First time he was at my house he told me my neighbor had a Big Bad Green AMX behind his house, news to me and sure enough there it was. AMC was way ahead of their time with a lot of things, the Eagle, AMX, Metropolitan which was Nash at the time.
Just saw a video where a guy 2 guys I think bought one of these cars and in the video he claims it's the only one in existence. Hmmm...wonder what's up with all that?
I know just enough to be dangerous! Ha, ok, so it was Bizarini eh? I thought when I talked to the owner he mentioned De Tomaso. GACK all the Ramblers and Valiants etc of that era with all the panache and styling of a refrigerator!
This car is absolutely gorgeous! I couldn't quite remember the name of this concept car, but Google helped me find it. They definitely should have put these into production, but I understand there were some challenges along the way that interfered with their plans. Sad. It looks like a cross between a Maserati and a Pantera. Did this concept have four wheel disc brakes? Four wheel independent suspension? With its European inspired looks, I'm guessing it did, and naturally with AMC power (the 390 V8 perhaps?). Imagine an AMC 390 cubic inch V8 with four twin-choke Weber carbs!
To continue, your Dad said the motor might be bad in the car when I got it and took it back to my town of Rockford, IL. It really was the fact that you and Rick really "had fun" with that car, didn't you guys? I found that two plug wires were crossed solving the motor problem. Your Dad wanted new carpets but after Rick got the car airborne around the subdivision, he bent the long seat bolts over 90 degrees when the car slammed down over a hill and bottomed out. The stories I could tell you.
there were 7 cars made by AMC +2 by the italians the 2 italian cars were imported so there were 9 cars in total i made. they also made a fiberglass shell of which i hear they are working on making into a kit formation today.
Apples and oranges. The Matador was an easy, conventional build, and the coupe was simply a restyled version that used existing AMC platforms. The AMX/3 was a special body, special transmission and transaxle, special and expensive build. Some folks say that there is a hint of the AMX/3 in the rear fenders of the Matador Couple, but I don't see it.
There's are 5 factory built and 1 more completed out of factory parts. Serial #1 is currently going under restoration and should be close to completion. It is Yellow.

If enough of us car guys could get together with the capital, the technology exists to take a 3D scan of legendary cars like this. I would tend to agree. Though I like the look of the Pantera. And would be happy with both. And yes, AMC should've built a limited run of them.
