He recently stated, that his throat was operated. This is going to be kind of long, but here is the google translation from Finnish article. I tried to correct a couple sentences, but you'll get the point:
"At the end of the 1990s, Marco Hietala was operated from the throat with polyp. The surgery had nasty consequences.
Marco Hietala, a bassist singer from the Nightwish and Tarot bands, for example, was losing his voice as a result of unsuccessful surgery. In his Stainless Life biography, published today, Hietala explains how, in the late 1990s, he drew attention to the special distortion in his voice.
The doctor found the left side of the vocal cords polyp and recommended that the surgery. Hietala agreed - and regretted his decision.
"The doctor said he had to use force (somehow I doubt he was a Jedi, though xD) to go to the polyp, but it shouldn't be a problem," Hietala says in his book.
The voice should return to normal in a couple of weeks. This was not the case. At first, the situation was so bad that Hietala couldn't sing at all.
In an interview with Savon Sanomat, Hietala recalls that the situation was very distressing, even desperate.
- I lost the channel and ability, through which I had largely built my personality and my whole life. This could be compared to a sprinter who has to sit in a wheelchair with broken legs. I thought, what I should do with my life?, Hietala says.
The loss of sound has not been raised earlier by Hietala because "It was late 90s, and my visibility to the people was not high".
The story has a happy end as Hietala's voice has been in a good shape for a long time. However, it has required a lot of work over the years. Hietala points out that the voice never returned to pre-operative levels.
- My clear upper falsetto was totally killed by that operation, Hietala says in his book:
- Much later from the left side of my vocal cords, was found a permanent nerve damage, that was caused from that operation. That is, the left and right sides of the vocal cords do not sync with each other properly. Well, in the name of honesty: I have managed with them."

I've read about Marko's history but never knew Tarot started as a hair metal band. Their stuff from the 90s kicks ass. The weirdest part is seeing him with no beard.

This is when he started to play with Nightwish as a full time member and he started to look more like he does now.
I was present at the sinergy/ nightwish tour and at that particular last show of the whole tour in Cologne, Germany. I still have the ticket at my wall. Traditionally the last gig on a tour is always filled with jokes, so the guys came on stage during the other bands sets and did funny things like a lightsword fight. Marco and Tarja actually sang a duet... Sinergy was the side project of Alexi Laiho, I think their album was called "Beware The Heavens". Thanks for the memories, one of my first metal concerts ever!

Марко не укладывая рук работал, не зная что такое отдых. Бесконечные гастроли, туры, посторенные проекты, съёмки.Кроме этого боролся с алкогольной зависимостью, пережил развод женой, скучал по своим сыновьям. Вдобавок терпел негативные реакции против nightwish от фанатов. Неудивительно, что свои 56 лет, он решил просто жить остаток жизни как хочется ему самому. Он это заслужил. Надеюсь, у него всё хорошо.
Судя по последнему интервью - ему действительно стало лучше, хоть он и не знает когда вернётся в NW или когда выпустит материал с дисков с треками Tarot. Да и не важно особо, главное чтобы его ментальные проблемы не вернулись вновь

Wow, so Marco has sung "Holy Diver" and many OTHER songs on this video. I MUST admit when I heard Marco singing along with Tarja here, it just "felt like home" somehow. I do see that Marco has been in several bands. I do LOVE seeing Marco singing "The islander" NIGHTWISH song. I do LOVE damn near EVERY song in this video because Marco is singing and playing bass in almost EVERY song. The man has been in the music BIZ since the 80;s and i REALLY do wish that I could have known about all the bands he was in back in the 80's and 90's. Here in the US once the 90's came about, heavy metal had gone "out of fashion" I has still listened to my favorite metal bands like Metallica and Iron maiden, BUT, the GRUNGE bands had also caught my attention, I did like Nirvana, Pearl jam, and Soundgarden amongst OTHER bands.

Marco seems to have sung a lot in bands in the 80's and 90's, I really do wish that I could have seen him singing in some of those bands back then. I MUST say that NOW since I have seen Marco when he was REALLY young that I can see that he has aged somewhat, BUT, he is still NOT looking over 50. I do think that he is now about 56 after hearing the last video that had said that he is nearly 5 yrs old, so, he is slightly older than I am now. I am just WONDERING, after seeing his name being spelled BOTH as "Marco" and "Marko", so, just which way is the CORRECT way?
That band in 2000 "Synergy" sounded pretty damn good. It is at about the 11:23 mark in the video, maybe a bit before that. Now, seeing the TRIBUTE band to Iron maiden makes me happy, I LOVE Maiden and have since the 1980's. I had heard that Marco had "tried out" to be in the band "Iron Maiden" on the "Roast" of Marco here ONLINE. BUT, when ANY person is "roasted" they are REALLY made to feel EMBARRASSED, and are commented about in a way that would possibly say things that may NOT REALLY be true, it is POSSIBLE that Marko had NOT tried to be considered to be in Iron Maiden at all, BUT, I do want to know IF he had REALLY "tried out" to be in the band Iron Maiden, mostly because Maiden is 1 of my favorite bands, and has been for DECADES. Bruce Dickinson DOES sing "The evil that men do" better than Marco does here though.
I just can NOT keep up making comments about Marco here on this place here because the video is so damn long and it will get to be really tedious soon.

What band was Marco in when he had been singing in the very beginning of this video? DAMN, Marco was in a metal band back in the 1980's? I see 1986 in 1 video here. I had been a BIG FAN of metal in the 80's and I even liked some 70's ,metal or hard rock bands back then. In the 1980's the closest that I had ever come to LOVING a band from Finland was when I LOVED the band TnT from NORWAY, and over the last 3 years I have come to LOVE the band Ghost from Sweden. AC/DC is from Australia, and OZZY is from the UK, but, NOW lives in the USA in California.
I think I read somewhere that Tomi Joutsen from Amorphis took some vocal lessons from Marco

Marco worked closely with Joutsen early on in the studio when Tomi was recording his first Amorphis albums. He was supposed to help out with melodies and arrangements as well.
