Ofcourse we can use Employee Name in the Drop-down list. Note that first column of second argument, i.e. first column of table array should contain these Employee names. Vlookup function search for the lookup value in the first column of table array.

Maybe the cell is displaying the corresponding number instead of Date. If so, you need to apply Date format to the cell.
Right click on the cell > Format Cells... > Date > select the required date format and Click OK

Of course we can VLOOKUP from a Pivot Table. But whenever somebody use a Slicer or Filter it can affect the structure of the Pivot Table and the formula may become useless.
Better Copy Paste the values from the Pivot Table to some other location and apply VLOOKUP.

There are 3 types of references in Excel. Relative, Mixed and Absolute. In absolute reference Row and Column index of a reference will be locked.
