  • If opera is a reflection of the times, who gets to tell their stories?
Director Matthew Ozawa takes us behind the concept of Detroit Opera's upcoming Madame Butterfly, a new production featuring an all Japanese and Japanese-American creative team. They transport Puccini’s tragedy to a virtual-reality setting that re-envisions how we view Madame Butterfly’s story. Experience the music you know and love in a production that re-imagines the opera’s events through the fantasy of a modern-day Pinkerton.

That is the most confusing production I've ever seen. I went with my two adult children. The night before they asked to tell them the story. At the opera house we got a very different version. The "gaming" Pinkerton was a huge distraction. The ending with the non-death of Butterfly was anti-climactic. On the other hand, the singers were quite good. Karah Son was amazing as Cio Cio San. Kudos also to Kristen Choi as Suzuki and Nmon Ford as Sharpless. Eric Taylor's voice seemed too light for Pinkerton. Plus, his role as a gamer remains puzzling to me.
