Fixing up a 1987 GT Performer

- In this video we fix up a 1987 GT Performer. Its not a restoration. Its a rustoration. I know the forks are a little bent and the chrome needs some work but what a beautiful bike. It turned out great. The video is made over the course of three days. It is a lot of work to get an old bike back up to snuff. The bike can be made to look even better but we are talking an insane amount of money to rechrome and to replace the decals. The bike would lose much of its character. I hope you enjoy the start to finish of the video. Don't forget to sub and give me your thumbs up. Enjoy!!

Awesome job. Trimming another inch from the bottom Gyro cable should make it sit completely out of the way. Hopefully the bike is ridden!
Thanks!👍
I rescued a Diamond back Joker from my neighbor. It had been left outside for years. They cleaned up their yard and was going to take it to the dump. I spent 3 days and around $130 getting it back to operable condition with parts from Wally world. New chain, tires, tubes, seat, and brake pads. Left it patina. Actually took it to my old hometown and rode with my childhood friend. It was awesome. I had an 85 GT Pro Performer when I was a kid but tried to get one to restore. Found out the prices are crazy. Cannot afford one now. Would be cool to see you and your brother ride your old neighborhood or hometown streets. I'm still editing my GoPro footage. You did a great job on that GT. You are very thorough and I enjoy watching your videos
Thank you very much.
I had one identical to the one you restored. Took me 2 yrs of mowing grass and working at bike repair shop as a kid to pay for that bike .Wish I still had that bike ,Nice work Jason
Thank you!
Nice save. GT has always been my fav bike brand. Just a year ago i built my 87 gt pro freestyle tour grail that i never had as a kid.
Cool bike! Thanks for sharing.
You did a great job on my GT Jason. Thank you very much .
Thank you.
I enjoyed that!! 🏴
Thank you. I have lots more to come. If you like BMX I have a Hutch next then a Dyno Comp and then an old school MCS and more.
Awesome!! Never understood why GT only had one mounted cable guide. Such a detail minded company and frame, yet leaving one to resort to a zip tie.
I have worked on other bikes using multiple cable guides and had issues with them (mostly being crushed while riding). I prefer using zip ties because they are replaceable and cheap. GT designers may have come up with the same idea. Thanks for your thoughts on this!
I believe in 1988 a second cable guide was added under the down tube of the Performer and the new Vertigo ST, thus eliminating the need for a zip tie. Same was true for '89.
Wow, very nice! I'm a GT/Dyno guy through and through. Nice to see this one clean up and be ridden again. 😎
I'm hoping to someday find a Vertigo or Performer with that style frame. Prices are absolutely bonkers nowadays though, but maybe I'll luck out. 😬
I've got a Dyno Comp coming up.
Awesome restoration! I bet that brought back memories!
Thank you very much.
Great job!!!!!
Thanks👍
Are we sure this isn't the factory original stem? If not, then it sure looks similar to the stem I remember for '87 Performers. In 1987-1988 my neighbor two doors down had an all-black '87 Performer. It was the first GT bicycle I ever saw, and it had a stem much like this one. In '94 my flatland friend bought an old, banged up '87 Performer (blue) to use as a thrasher bike, and it too had a stem that resembled this one.
BTW, I LOVE OKG mags! I wonder if anyone can tell us about how much a set is worth today.
Correct. Basic GT Performers came with top load stems. The Pro Performer came with the iconic front load mallet stem.
I love the old inside out sock. Best hand polisher there is! Lol...
It's funny but I have spent some money on expensive rags for polishing but nothing works better on a bike then a clean old sock. Thanks for watching.
@@alloutbikes same here. Lol. 30+ years messing with old bikes. And love thee old sock for a good polish!!!
Pretty sure that's a factory stem. Looks just like mine.
Needs a love button. Not just a like. FYI you know that there’s a British actor named Jason Isaacs? Coincidence? I don’t think so.
Thank you. I did know about Jason because he popped up during family tree research. No relation.
Wow very meticulous job! That came out fantastic. Awesome 👏
I wish it was my bike. I have been looking for one for years. Everytime I find one it's to far gone or it costs a fortune. Thanks!
@@alloutbikes I have a 1985 GT Pro Performer in chrome. These bikes are awesome. You did an outstanding job on this GT. 👍👍 Greetings from Oceanside California.
Good job I like that 🚲 bike
Thank you very much.
Awesome work Sir !!
Thank you Sir!
Pretty sure I had this bike in yellow or like neon yellow. Memories of getting up to no good riding that thing came flooding back, totally forgot I had that thing.
Wish it was mine! Thanks!
Would you do a video on brakes? Side pull. Center pull. Disk brakes. Pros/cons of each and proper adjustments.
Shure. I will try to do one this week. Try is the word.
I use WD40, I spray a shot or 2 directly to the steel wool it really let's it glide and it really comes out amazing! But you definitely make it look good buddy.
What the "Cars and Cameras" Batman?
👍
Do you know where I can find those odyssey brake calipers cone nuts? Or cwhat else might use them , maybe I can borrow the nuts... I know the dia comp nippons use a similar nut, but that won't get me much farther down the road, considering the prices
Just find some old brakes with the cone nut already on it. They are everywhere if you look hard enough. Thanks!
What kind of polish did you use on the chrome?
Any kind of chrome polish. In this case I used Mothers. Thanks.
@@alloutbikes Thanks!
Hell yea
👍
Great video. Where are you located ? I actually have the same exact bike and am looking to restore it.
Four Oaks, NC. USA
@@alloutbikes how much would you charge for a restore ?
That was a $500 restoration. Tires, tubes, cables and new wheels. That was a solid 3 days work. Let me know. If you don't need wheels the Skyway wheel were $199.99. Thanks.
@@alloutbikes anyway i can get in contact with you ?
Great video! Lower the music volume a bit to match the rest of the video
Thanks, I will try better. That's what happens when you get down to the last minute. You miss things like that when your in a rush.
How did you get those mags so white?
New Skyways. The customer kept the original wheels incase he wants to put them back on.👍
Did u just put alot of scratches in that chrome with wool yikes
No. I was using #0000 steel wool. I does not put scratch chrome. Normal steel wool scratches the heck out of chrome.
@@alloutbikes Kool to know nice work 👍
i just got a 1999
I'm jealous. Take care of it.👍
