  • How does the Pyle PDMIC 78 compare to the venerable Shure SM57 for miking the snare drum? I set out to answer that question, trying to be as thorough and objective as possible. Additionally, I show you my exact signal chain from mic to Logic Pro, so you can see exactly how this test was done. If you're a drummer who is interested in finding out how to save money while still getting a good sound, please watch this. You may be surprised! Here are links to both mics:

    Greatest review I've seen on this microphone. The blind comparison was a great idea, I actually mixed the two up!

    Best review of this mic i've seen so far. This is surely a good buy for the buck, at that price you can't go wrong. I bought 4 of them and planning to get a 5 th one, they perform a charm on the kick. They are also good for miking electric guitar amps.

    I found a pair of these PDKM78’s online and the seller replaced the stock transformers with aftermarket/replacement transformers found in the SM57. They sound amazing!

    Hey, thanks for the video!.
    I am surprised, before knowing the outcomes I would have chosen mic B because in my opinion it is more warm and full, mic A is a little bit high. Thanks again.

    Nice demo, I also slightly preferred the Pyle over the Shure. I guessed which one was which because I've watched other reviews and the Pyle is known as a brighter sounding mic than the 57 and I could certainly hear that Mic B was brighter than Mic A. Some people will probably say it's "harsh" sounding, but you could always cut the high frequencies a bit, using a little EQ if it's too bright or harsh for you and make it sound very similar to the 57. For the money it's awesome!

    Dude thats crazy !
    I was positive that the pyle was Mic A. Mic B had so much more tone and bass in it and I was thinking it was because of the better quality in the mic. So obviously the more expensive one. But I was soooo wrong ! 😄
    Thank you for this.
    Btw, I also saw a video explaining how you can rewire/rebalance the Pyle mic with a bit of solder. You cant go wrong with that Pyle. I honestly like the sound from it so much better. Im happy its the cheaper one.
    Stay safe out there

      I dropped my Pyle mic recently, and it went dead. I took it apart and found one of the wires had come loose at the solder joint in the capsule. I resoldered it and all is well. However, I did compare the innards against the Shure SM57, and the wires in the 57 are much thicker, so I think the build quality 57 is more robust overall.

      The Pyle has cheap wires almost look like plastic. Parts are much cheaper. It still has a nice weight to it thou somehow.
      When I balanced it I redid the wires with thicker ones.

    Years ago I unknowingly bought a counterfeit SM57 off eBay. I then bought a real SM57 from a music retailer in town. In comparing the two, I found the the cheaper (fake) mic had clearer highs while the Shure seemed to clip the top end. I was quite surprised as I often see SM57s used to mic guitars and instruments that are known for producing higher frequencies. I guess with the Shure’s emphasis on midrange, must be used to tame much of the instrument high frequencies?
    I’d love to hear people’s responses.

  • @WorldPowerLabs
    @WorldPowerLabs Рік тому

    The SM57 contains a transformer and a bunch of hot glue to fix that in place. I don't own a Pyle, but I believe it's transformerless, so that would probably explain the weight difference.

  • @smithjedediah
    @smithjedediah 4 роки тому

    I'd also guess that the pyle has less midrange response because it doesn't have a transformer- it's not a coincidence that the famous "remove the transformer" mod for sm57s scoops out a noticeable amount of its midrange response, and overall gain- and perceptively because of that it seems to have more high end response. Anyway I don't know why I'm interjecting with all this other than because it's interesting to me. Thanks for the video, very helpful stuff!

    Okay, in your last test against the Samson I thought the SM57 was worth spending twice the amount. In this comparison I wouldn’t spend nine times the price for the SM57 especially since I thought the Pyle PDMIC78 sounded better. I chose example B before Knew which one it was. Great video! Keep it up👍

  • @smithjedediah

    The sm57 is probably significantly heavier because it has a transformer, while the pyle does not- that's my guess anyway

    Hey man, how did you get that great drum sound from the Pyle? I just picked up one and might get 3 more to use as a kick mic, snare mic, and 2 overheads. I've been experimenting with it for a while now and I just can't seem to get the beautiful sound that you got. I am very new to recording, as this is my first microphone. I am running the mic into a 4-channel mixer and out of the mixer via 3.5-usb into my not-so-good laptop with an online program (Soundtrap). Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

      Be sure your drums are tuned well before blaming your mic placement. Also make sure everything is in phase. Destructive interference can kill a drum tone

    I own a few Shure microphones and I also have bought a few of these Pyle microphones and other branded Chinese branded microphones... And there is a lot of there. I also find that many like the Pyle brand soundwise are comparable to Shure. Like you said in your video, is the build quality the same? I guess we'll find out over time... However, I will tell you that I rather bring couple of these mic's out for a live show and risk having them either get stolen or broken than one of my $100.00+ Shure mic's any day out of the week/weekend. Havea great week. 🙂

      Yes the fact that the Shure SM57 weighs twice as much as the Pyle mic concerns me. Both the Shure SM57 and SM58 have earned high marks as workhorses on the road, due to their ability to take a beating. During my career I've seen these mics get dropped countless times and keep on working flawlessly. But I get your point....it's much less painful replacing a $12 mic than a $100 mic. As you said, time will tell!
