John played all the guitars on Misfire off Sheer Heart Attack. When he heard he’d be playing a stand up bass in Who Wants To Live Forever, he learned how to play one.

As for what kind of band Queen was: They could do all sorts of things, and do them well. That's why almost everybody likes at least some of their work. A Night at the Opera had both the epic stylings of Bohemian Rhapsody, moments of metal in the Prophet's Song, silliness like Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon, a folk song in '39, and Dixieland jazz in Good Company.
