The record itself had two MASSIVE hits; "Another One Bites the Dust" and "Under Pressure" with Bowie, so I guess it makes sense that this one basically just got shoved aside and into obscurity. When I was little, my mom had the "Hot Space" cassette in her car. Back then of course you didn't often skip songs on a tape, so I heard this A LOT, but didn't pay much attention though, honestly, I just liked the aforementioned hits. Well, it'll no longer be underrated; no doubt a whole new generation will be exposed to it and love it because it's all over the TV rn.

Because it sounds like a band trying to cash in on something they don't really understand. It is an album made up of songs which would be better-than-average-fillers, but in no way carry the album or come close to being Queen classics. It is not surprise that none of the songs made it to the Greatest Hits compilation - except Under Pressure, which was made in a different context. But of course that makes Cool Cat that hidden gem in Queen's catalogue, so maybe the main merrit of the album is hiding something worth being discovered?

okay but to be honest, i feel like some people hate on this album because brian doesn’t like it. they think “oh if brian hates it, i should too!” but it’s honestly one of my favourite queen albums because it’s so unique and delves into a different genre they’ve never really messed with before, and they absolutely nail it. so the people who don’t like hot space, should take one more listen to it.

      Totally agree!
      Very underrated album.
Probably because back in the day people were more closed minded when it comes to music genres.
So rock fans were supposed to hate funk, disco, etc, and since MTV banned the video to the album's lead single BODY LANGUAGE the album stayed under the radar of any audience outside of the Queen fanbase.
(BTW: MTV also banned their next album's lead single I WANT TO BREAK FREE and so basically killed Queen's US career for the rest of the 80's.)

I was a very big Queen fan at that time (born1971)and almost couldnt wait until the record was sold. That's why I was so surprised about the hype, never saw the commercial. Queen is able to play every style they want, 4 songwriters in a 4 men band and all have got different tastes. Not to forget they are able to play the songs even live(better) you recognise the guitar by the first tone and Freddie, well Freddie had the best voice in modern music.

It actually reminds me of Crusin' by Smokey Robinson. Love it. Love Freddie's falsetto.

John Deacon's brilliance shines through on this track - he plays all of the instruments except the electric piano played by Freddie!! wow!

    Ooh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!
You're taking all the sunshine away
Making out like you're the main line (I knew that)
    'Cause you're a cool cat
Tapping on the toe with a new hat
    Ooh just cruising
Driving along like the swing king
Feeling the beat of my heart, huh!
Feeling the beat of my heart
    Ooh you're a cool cat
Coming on strong with all the chit chat
    Ooh you're alright
Hanging out and stealing all the limelight
Ooh messing with the beat of my heart yeah!
Ooh you used to be a mean kid
Ooh making such a deal of life
Ooh you were wishing and hoping and waiting
To really hit the big time
But did it happen? Happen, no!
You're speeding too fast, slow down
Slow down, you'd better slow down, slow down
You really know how to set the mood
And you really get inside the groove
Cool cat tapping on the toe with a new hat
    Ooh just cruising
Driving along like the swing king
Feeling the beat of my heart
Feeling the beat of my heart, yeah!
Feeling the beat of my heart
    Can you feel it?
Feeling the beat of my heart
Feeling the beat of my heart
    Ooh feeling, feeling, feeling
    Feeling every feeling.

Amazon commercial brought me here. I thought I knew most of Queen's music but this one slipped by. Very cool song and is now in my playlist.
