The Great Pandemic of 2020 has taken another artist - thank you David Greenfield for such a haunting melody - and...like golden leaves of an Autumn tree...they keep dropping one by one...there's never a frown with Golden Brown.
I don't care what anyone says. Covers are supposed to be just that. COVERS. Someone else's interpretation of a work. This is marvelous, I LOVE it. And I'm a huge Stranglers fan.
I absolutely agree! It's so great to see different peoples interpretations of one of the greatest songs ever written. I recently just covered this track - ua-cam.com/video/gH69yBLISSg/v-deo.html
Why is everyone hating on their take on the song? it's a cover and they put their own twist on it and in my opinion it sounds great, but I must say the original song is amazing
+Blake Kallok I agree The stranglers did a cover of Walk On By and nailed it for me. Songs will always be covered , it may not always suit the individuals who heard the original!
Blake and Lechl: I agree with you. Excellent observations. Thank you for reminding me of "Walk on By". I loved the Strangler's take on it. The original was one of my mother's favorites. She used to sit me on her lap while she played it on the piano. It was probably the only way to get me out of her hair so she could practice. I don't know which was more soothing, my mother's arms on either side of me or the rumbling of that beautiful piano.
"...Why is everyone hating on their take on the song? " Honestly? Because it's lame. The original version was a mysterious threatening hallucinogenic fever dream. This version sounds like a love song about a girl who works in a law firm and has a summer romance with a nice bloke called Gavin while staying in a cottage in Dorset.
I actually like the slower tempo. When I play the song on my guitar, I always slow it down a little bit from how the Stranglers wrote it, but overall, I don't like what they've done to it here. That said, this is what they do. I see their music as half tongue-in-cheek lampoon and half serious musical effort. Sometimes, I think their versions are brilliant, like their cover of Lords of the New Church's "Dance With Me," and other times, I think it misses the mark. This is one of those times, but I like her voice on it. Liset is a very talented singer and an engaging performer from what I've seen of live footage from the band. Perhaps if I didn't love this song so much, I would like this version better, but this is one of my favorite songs, and I think they strip away a lot of what makes the song so haunting and wonderful. Still, it isn't bad, and if I had never heard the original, I'd probably like this a lot. It's fine that they did what they did with it; it's just not how I interpret the song.
Wonderful version...... I love Liset.... she is so beautiful and a great artist ! This just might be the coolest ever ❤ I love Nouvelle Vague, they make such great covers!
Their versions of New Wave songs are generally brilliant. Of course, if the original doesn't have great chord and melody interplay, it won't work that well in other genres. This is a great example of a beautifully composed song that lends itself to reinterpretation because the original is so strong.
Wait! This was posted 10 years ago?? How did I miss this?? Because I am a fool, that is why. This is a stunning version of Golden Brown,I salute you,and your fellow musicians. Truly beautiful ❤️
I love the fiddle player. He plays this song with the clear, long tones closer to how fiddles are played for folk songs, instead of the modern strong-vibrato technique used for classical violins. Both can sound great, but I think his technique matches the arrangement/style, and his partner's singing and guitar, exquisitely,
absolutely gorgeous version, fantastic composition from just two talented artists showing that in certain styles sometimes less is more. No loopers, no effects, no gimmicks, just sensual seductive sounds that can be played and enjoyed anywhere, like around a campfire, as music once was. - To everyone complaining, there is absolutely nothing off or wrong about this interpretation, appreciate musical styles for what they are, get off your hipster high horses and get over yourselves. You're all probably the same people that threw a tantrum when Cash released his stripped down version of Hurt...
Lovely version - Nouvelle Vague have been doing this very thing for 12 years - the whole point is: Nouvelle Vague translates into English as 'New Wave' and into Portugese as 'Bossa Nova', hence: new wave songs done in a bossa nova style...
I've known this song since I was young and it's one of my favorites from the musical range that I've chosen over the years as excellent and honestly I've never heard such a good interpretation, congratulations
This lady is gold . Reminds me of Fenella Fielding , a goddess . Most of you are too young to remember . She was special , along with Millicent Martin of that era .
Another video for me to enjoy six years too late lol I love this, great guitar and violin and lovely smokey vocals, one of my favourite songs too, win win
Golden brown texture like sun Lays me down with my might she runs Throughout the night No need to fight Never a frown with golden brown Every time just like the last On her ship tied to the mast To distant lands Takes both my hands Never a frown with golden brown Golden brown finer temptress Through the ages she's heading west From far away Stays for a day Never a frown with golden brown Never a frown With golden brown Never a frown With golden brown
Alejandro, im afraid the jokes on you. Although the song is about Heroin in part the lead singer who wrote the lyrics (Hugh Cornwell) has stated many times that the song is also about his girlfriend of the time who was of mediterranean descent and whos skin was golden brown so yes, she would be correct in assuming it was about a love interest because it is! "Lol"

That's true, but not every interpretation is good.
I did not particularly enjoy Sneaker Pimps version of this song.
I absolutely agree! It's so great to see different peoples interpretations of one of the greatest songs ever written. I recently just covered this track - ua-cam.com/video/gH69yBLISSg/v-deo.html
it seems like the whole idea of a cover is to make the song your own. otherwise its just coloring with crayons in a coloring book.
a cover is a note for note rendition - a version is a tribute . ..
A friend of mine would Not believe me when I told him joe cocker only sang covers. I could not stop laughing
What I love about this is they're tapping into a Celtic connection in the composition of the song. Wonderful. 😊
The stranglers version does that too. Hugh sounds like Donovan in it and he was an afficienaro of Celtic music.
Why is everyone hating on their take on the song? it's a cover and they put their own twist on it and in my opinion it sounds great, but I must say the original song is amazing
Some people hate it because it's too happy ( since the songs about heroin )
I think it's a beautiful cover

This is so perfect. Melancholy songs about love, life, or drugs is perhaps the most beautiful thing to the ears and the soul.

So true. And this song also has interesting rhythm patterns. Another thing to play with.
Wait!

Wish this was at my library. A beautiful rendition.😀😀
She IS the librarian, she just let her hair down and removed the nerd glasses.
Just nothing. I forget it immediately. First time hearing the stranglers doing golden brown, loving it forever.

This song, one of my all time faves from the amazing 80's, combined with that beautiful, smoky, sultry voice is as lovely and sexy as it gets.

Such a gorgeous voice.
Good music in a good venue. The people here are lucky to have you perform there.
I'm old and love the original. This is a beautiful cover.
She's lucky, cos most of us wouldn't get to do this for long in a library, regardless how acoustically you play. Seriously, this is a good version
Most librarians are happy to host music shows, you just need to schedule the day with them ^-^
