Like many others, I have always admired Winston Churchill. He was a once-in-a-generation orator in the great European oratory tradition began in Ancient Greece and Rome. I’m reading his History of the English-Speaking Peoples. As with any work of history, it reflects the attitudes, some negative, of his time and place, but I enjoy it tremendously.

PLEASE POST PART 2. An argument not just for reading/studying history but for the ties that bind a nation, invisible strong like oaths. It seems Britain has today lost all sense of national identity with no one to weave a coherent whole. Thank you Dr Starkey. How fortunate that Churchill had studied Marlborough in those years.

But why does he jump the short reign of James II and all that James did to punish his subjects and to re-convert the country back to Roman Catholicism via the subjection of the established Protestant Church of England post the Cromwellian period and via pseudo appeals over the head of the established Church to dissident Protestants ie those of former Cromwellian sympathies? Why no reference to the filling of the Army and other government posts including the Judiciary with Catholics to wit the infamous Judge Jeffries, the Tower of London imprisonment of seven Church of England bishops, and the cruel execution of his brother’s illegitimate son Monmouth?

It is extremely significant that diplomats and the power elite understand that the first “World War” happened in the 17th century. When there is a true Understanding of the historical culture ( beliefs & behavior) of the European countries then the ability to avoid another war is more of a possibility. This analysis by Starkey is incredibly valuable … just as Churchill was a lone voice prior to WW2, Starkey can highlight the issues that could lead to another world war. It is so important that people learn history and it is unfortunate that history is not well taught in our education centers. History is more than dates...it is about people & culture.

Thank you for creating this. Frankly, in the US, k -12 schools always teach history from a US-centric viewpoint; thus, the focus of The Glorious Revolution was on how James's daughter and son-in-law gave their name to the oldest college in Virginia. I've read world history since my time in the public school system, but this helps to fill in the gaps. Could I hope that you will write a book about the topic?

Winston Churchill IMO was put on this earth to save civilization from the horrors of Nazi Germany spreading throughout the globe. The fact that his own family history had so many parallels to the time he was living in can't be an accident. Like any human being Churchill has his flaws but to my mind he was one of the great (and last) warrior leaders to fight the good fight against true evil.

It is no surprise that Charles holds Starkey in such esteem (as to place him in the first row). As an historian and writer myself, I share the views of my British colleagues in admiration of Churchill as a wordsmith. His writings and speeches have greatly influenced my own style, as it has David Starkey, Ian Kershaw, Max Hastings, and John Keegan, among many others. And keep in mind: all these great scholars (and unknown others like me) have had the benefit of FAR more formal education and training in the craft of writing than Churchill ever had.
No one, I'd argue, has ever bested him in his mastery of the English language.
His writing style isn't "old-fashioned;" it's more accurate to say that we're simply not as good.

There was a bit of history that I always had a chuckle about over Louis XIV, and that was: "In 1686, Louis XIV of France (1638 - 1715) - The Sun King - developed a perianal abscess that after a series of failed treatment attempts, including with the use of a red-hot iron, developed into an anal fistula." His physician had a barber-surgeon to do the operation, and afterward, the elites surrounding him started wearing bandaged bums as a fashion, where some even requested the surgery themselves.

Starkey is amazing but the parallel between Louis XIV and Hitler is quite awkward to anyone with knowledge of Louis XIV’s reign.
Worth noting that Churchill’s opinion on him was clearly flawed by an antiFrance sentiment

    • @jamesrobson4894

Couldn’t agree more, as someone who has studied Louis XIV at length it’s rather reductive and extreme to liken him to Hitler; very different in their worldviews, aims and motivations. Churchill was as you say writing from a certain perspective and point in time, so I find it more surprising and dare I say disagreeable that Starkey keeps pushing the comparison for a modern viewership.

"Winston's war" as you snidily put it saved the UK.
Not confronting Hitler in 1939 would have resulted with Britain by the late 1940s onwards having:
A puppet nazi government, a nazi supporting King Edward VIII restored to the throne, and the UK as a nazi satellite state.
Extermination camps in the Cotswolds, Pennines & Scottish Highlands.
SS Einsatzgruppen stalking the shires looking to find "undesirables" to summarily execute.
All UK males of working age being deported to the reich to be slaved to death in nazi armaments factories or infrastructure projects.
And now, slimy nazi fanbois and other devious loons want the uninformed to think that letting Hitler conduct his plans undisturbed would mean that we would have a Britain today filled with Rose cottages, warm beer, bar skittles & village cricket.
How utterly devious those people are, people with greater awareness of the situation don't fall for their nazi apologist nonsense.
