I know you boys were wonderin' so I'mma let you know my top 10 games to start a collection: 10. Sushi Go 9. Fuse 8. Codenames 7. Forbidden Desert 6. Flip Ships 5. Welcome to... 4. Clank! 3. Wingspan 2. Azul 1. Patchwork (the real slim shady of polyomino/tetris games)
Great list. I would do something like this, order doesn't matter: 10. Sagrada (pattern building with dice) 9. Five Tribes (unique mancala puzzle) 8. Raiders of the North Sea (worker placement) 7. Point Salad (filler set collection) 6. Werewords (party bluffing) 5. 7 wonders duel (2 player) 4. The Quacks of Quedlinburg (push your luck) 3. Century: Spice Road (deck building) 2. Barenpark (tile placement) 1. Wingspan (engine building, tableau building, upgrades, set collection, dice rolling, resource management, excell...whatever you want) Honorable mention: Porto (amazing for introducing new players and...it's portuguese)
Stone Age, Azul, Sagrada, either Century or Splendor, Detective Club, Ticket To Ride, Wingspan, Clank, Road to El Dorado, 7 Wonders, Welcome To, Dice Forge
My first 10 games that kicked off the hobby for me.. 1. Pandemic 2. King of Tokyo 3. Biblios 4. SushiGo Party 5. Roll For It 6. Kingdomino 7. Lost Cities 8. Raptor 9. Viticulture 10. Hanimakoji all still in my collection good clip guys
Cartographers, Azul, carcassone, Tiny Towns, Raiders of the North Sea and Architects of the West kingdom, Settlers of Catan, Point Salad, King Domino and My favorite Five Tribes!
Great list, guys! Here are my picks, if I had to pick 10 to start with that could help me get into the hobby: 10. Q.E. 9. Five Tribes 8. The Crew 7. On Tour 6. The Isle of Cats 5. Everdell 4. Wavelength 3. Downforce 2. Wingspan 1. Atlantis Rising 2e
Raiders of the North Sea - for everything you said. High Society - for everything you said, covers auction/bidding and arguably resource/hand management. Carcassonne - for everything you said. The Shipwreck Arcana - a beautiful co-op deduction game that shows how much game you can get out of a very little package. And it's cheap! Parks - another beautiful, easy to understand game. Teaches one-way action tracks and has a wonderful theme. Also shows a deluxified style game for a standard game price. On Tour - The obligatory roll and write in the collection, but it's infinitely scalable and helps everybody be in misery together. The stories that people tell during the game (well screw Montana we aren't going there!) are great. Indulgence - Everybody should have a trick taking game and this one is a good step up from the Hearts that everybody knows and plays. Familiarity while expanding on the concept. Space Base - Dice chucking but for incredibly high player interaction. Also helps teach engine building and you can ignore the green power ships until you understand the game better. Plus it helps provide for that high player count and has great expansions. Camel Up - I love this game at high player counts (6-8) and helps show betting/racing. It's also essentially a party game - I've never seen the table not get super into it and start swearing about their bets going wrong. King of Tokyo - Dice chucking but in the Yahtzee style. Hard to not get into the theme and it scales up for people. I like KoT Dark the best, but either one works.
Great lost I think mine would look like 10. Second Chance 9.Quacks 8.Wingspan 7. Luxor 6.Copenhagen 5.Cartographers 4.Ethnos 3.Azul Summer Pavillon 2.For Sale 1.Point Salad
My list (in no particular order) is somewhat diffrent. Carcassonne Azul Ticket to Ride (VS or Europe) Quacks of Quadlinburg Quest for el Dorado Escape: curse of the temple Bärenpark* Everdell* Taverns of Tiefenthal Deception: Murder in Hong Kong The two titels with an * are still to be added to our collection. Hé guys, I love the energy you put in your videos! Keep em coming. Greetings from The Netherlands.
Fine here is the infalible list you need. 10: The Isle of Cats 9: Any Azul 8: Fast Sloths 7: Century Spice Road 6: Bunny Kingdom 5: Clank! 4: Quacks of Quedlinburg 3: Space Base 2: Lords of Waterdeep 1: Wingspan
This is hard because I played some of what people call gateway games and didn't fall in love with gaming but then I tried some heavy games and now I'm addicted to gaming.
Oh btw that super gorgeous edition of High Society is from Osprey Games -- they have other super pretty productions like Cryptid, Lost Expedition, and Odin's Ravens
My Selections: 10 (worker placement) architects of west kingdom 9 (filler) For Sale or Silver and Gold 8 (familiar/dead simple) Ticket to Ride or Azul 7 (engine builder) Wingspan, maybe Orleans 6 (party/social deduction) CodeNames, Dixit or Obscurio 5 (co-op) Flash Point fire rescue or Pandemic 4 (push your luck) Diamont/incan Gold...but I do really like Quacks 3 (Roll & Write) I haven't played it, but I'd go with Cartographers 2 (must have designer: Feld) Castles of Burgundy 1 (gateway) Splendor
Please could you make a list of the top 10 most beautiful games? I ask because I’m not a hard core gamer but the artwork in Wingspan really drew me to the game and I’m curious to know if there are other games with great art design. By the way you guys are fun to watch. Thanks for the content.
You might check out Everdell - my favorite game for its great mechanics AND beautiful forest animal artwork. There's also Aquatica, fabulous underwater game but be sure to get the expansion, it adds so much to the gameplay. Isle of Cats has cool artwork too and it includes 2 rule sets, one kid friendly and one more competitive.
No particular order:. 10. Ticket to Ride 9. Catan 8. Lords of Water Deep 7. Citadels 6. King of Tokyo 5. DownForce 4. Splendor 3. Wingspan 2. Race for the galaxy 1. Azul
I think Santorini and Century (SR or Golem) are great collection pieces. They are both simple enough to be gateways but deep enough to be fun for more advanced players. Especially Santorini where you can take out the god cards and play as a gateway then add in the god cards to ramp up the difficulty later. I played a handful of games before I started my collection but my first ten were: 1) One Night Ultimate Werewolf 2) Ikusa 3) Sushi Go 4) Century SR 5) Terraforming Mars 6) Santorini 7) Munchkin (given to me) 8) Secret Hitler 9) Bang TCG 10) Pandemic w/On the Brink Exp. (bought from a friend as a set). Out of those I've definitely gotten Century out more than the others, then Santorini, then Sushi Go. I have Azul SP but that and Sushi Go i don't find as fun as the other two or as essential.
STFU!!!! The Wheelmen!!! It's 12am and I'll just watchin somethin before goin to sleep. I had to get up and open the game too see..... You guys are inside one of my all time faves!!! Recently picked up the remake, still own the original.
Right now my collection consists of Carcasonne, Ticket To Ride, Settlers of Catan, Sagrada, Splendor, and Pandemic. So I am looking to get Dominion next and then Architects of the West Kingdom, I cant get wingspan right now, although it is on my wishlist. I was thinking Terraforming Mars as well.
I just wanted to say thank you! I appreciate you guys, and your videos are a fun and small escape during a time of craziness! Keep up the great work fellas!!!
Respectable list, gentlemen! You have my applause for Carcassonne, Barenpark (and anything PWH - spot on analysis), Quacks, and High Society. I'd swap out Sagrada for Azul, and then swap out Azul for the friendlier, more accessible Kingdomino (Hey! No Bruno Cadootie???!!!). King of Tokyo needs a place. Forbidden Island for a co-op (not the time for Pandemic, geesh!). Camel Up for family/party. Santorini to convert checkers/chess familiars and introduce them to special powers.
Lords of Waterdeep, DC Deckbuilder, Five Tribes, Seasons, Zombicide, Munchkin (If you have young kids, this game rocks), Xia, Dead of Winter (If you have friends you want to hate, this game rocks), Saboteur, Unmatched (Cobble & Fog)
We almost chose that over Wingspan as our "engine builder" choice. But there are so many different cards it can be overwhelming for new players. Plus Wingspan has a more unique theme and looks better. But you could very easily slot Space Base in there and it would be a great choice!
So good boys! Loved this list. Some new ones I've earmarked to buy soon. Here's my list from my own collection that I would recommend for a starter's collection... in no order (read more to see my thoughts on each): Carcassonne Tiny Towns Wingspan Code Names Sushi Go Party 6 Nimmt (6 Takes) Zombie Dice Wurfel Bohnanza Parks Mysterium I'd agree with Carcassonne. I have the big box and it got played many times upon first purchase. Tiny Towns has really been a good one for new players. The Tetris feel is so real and it has been a winner straight off the bat with new players. Wingspan is a dream to play as it is astheticly next level and it comes with a tutorial for newbies. Code names is just the best party game and is a big winner at our game nights for all ppl. Saw someone put sushi go... Yes!!! I'd actually say Sushi Go Party. This intros card drafting and does it with such a fun theme. Excellent playtime range and lots of variety. You could play this game in Covid lockdown for a whole day and not get bored. Can I just say as a card game here, 6 Nimmt (6 Takes) has got to be the most played game of all time in my household. The fact you can play up to ten ppl, and like you said before with those tense moments where it just created big, memorable plays... And for the price, you must own it! Zombie Dice is a fun push your luck game and the ability to play infinite number of ppl technically is also a plus. As a school teacher, my primary aged kids loved this game and it was a staple on rainy days. Going with a much lesser known one here, Wurfel Bohnanza. It is by far the best variant of the much loved Bohnanza series. It is a 5 player max game but literally every player is fully engaged on every person's turn (like tiny towns). There is almost no down time in this game. Maximum value! Gotta have a meatier game here as well, and I was just introduced to Parks near the end of 2019 by a good friend. I liked it so much that I immediately went out to buy it! It is such a unique and simple to understand (yet potentially deeeeep) game that is visually stunning. The packaging of the game is next level phenomenal as well. So satisfying. Mysterium. You have to have a good co-op game and I can't think of one that's more satisfying, communicative, different, quirky or beautiful. Also, the difficulty level is so easily adjustable. This game has been a winner everytime it's been played with new players as well. Easy to learn. So satisfying when you win!
We almost put Tiny Towns on the list! Though it can be a tad expensive for how big the game is so we left it off, but we totally agree with you! And instead of Sushi Go! We recommend Sushi Roll. Same game but much easier to teach the concept of drafting to new people! Great list!
This is a difficult list to make. I think mine would be: Sagrada, Potion Explosion or Quacks, 7 Wonders, Isle of Cats, Castles of Burgundy, Just One, Sushi Roll, Forbidden Island or Forbidden Desert, Takenoko, Bang!the Dice Game. And on your recommendation I recently bought Orleans. It is. Ow one of my favorites! Thanks guys!!!
Without spending too much time thinking about it, my list would probably be: Bohnanza, Small World, 7 Wonders, Azul/Patchwork, Clank! A Deck-Building Adventure/Star Realms, Dixit, Isle of Skye, King of Tokyo, Hanamikoji, and Ra. And if people want something a bit more complicated, I would toss in Tzolk'in and Castles of Burgundy (despite how ugly the artwork is). I haven't played most of the games you mentioned, but I really enjoyed Wingspan. I am really keen on trying Raiders of the North Sea! I am not a fan of Carcassonne at all. It is definitely in the bottom 25% of games I have played (if you don't count total crap like Monopoly and Mench: ärgere dich nicht).
I think Clank! Is a great choice for that next level game. It's still relatively simple and teachable but has some meat on it's bones. Also the push your luck aspect is just so fun!
I have not played Carcassone....also this is a solid list for sure. I would add Grimm Forest or Downforce to this list. Both are extremely accessible and the fun factor is super high but there's also some depth to them as well
That's awesome! I still have a copy of the original Stop Thief and the sound generator still works : ] A friend recently told me to check out some table games, so thanks for the video as I try to find a game to get into.
Woe Woe! How am I just finding yalls channel?? Great video guys. I really thought this was going to be a typical list video but it really surprised me. Even some ive never even heard of! Wish yall had links so when I buy em y'all get street-cred. Our List: 10) Above & Below or Near & Far 9) Unearth 8) Dominion 7) 7 Wonders 6) Sheriff of Nottingham 5) Colt Express 4) Las Vegas 3) Chronicles of Crime 2) Grimm Forrest 1) Splendor
Good list. I'd include Azul. For betting I would include For Sale or Cursed Court over High Society. Century Spice Road. Architects over Raiders, maybe. No trick-taking I see? Consider Indulgence or Skull King. My gaming group also enjoyed Blue Moon City and El Grande. (As a side note, I purchased El Grande Big Box from Amazon about a year ago for about 24 dollars. That's crazy)
Trick taking is tough. Unless the people you are playing with have some interest in learning the mechanic or grew up playing it, they can be notoriously hard to get to the table. But we totally agree that Indulgence is the one we'd choose. We love Skull King but it's a little advanced for a first trick taking in our opinion.
@@TheBrothersMurph Agreed with everything you said. My game group, which really only consists of my sisters, their hubbies and kids, grew up with Oh Heck! However I did teach my 8 year old daughter how to play Diamonds, so there's that.
Michael West we definitely thought about it. There’s just a few too many cards that are a little confusing to explain but if we did another list of games it could easily show up. It’s so solid
As someone who just seriously started collecting a year ago: Sagrada, Wingspan, Carcassonne are 3 huge staples for me. I also love Barenpark (PRAISE BE TO PWH!) on BGA but decided to grab NYZ as my polyomino zoo game lol. PS: I may be one of the only people who does not love quacks…and learned it early in my gaming days. I’ve been enjoying Living Forest which has that similar bust mechanic, so maybe you guys will just have to teach me how to love Quacks at a Con.
Heck yeah welcome to the hobby and we have been wanting to try New York Zoo and Living Forest so you teach us those and we'll show you the love we have for Quacks!
Haha... I've never played the new Stop Thief. I have a copy from the early 1980s, where you had an old-school walkie talkie thing that did what the phone app does nowadays. Used to play it with my grandparents when I was a kid.
First 8 games I've bought (because I only own 8 games as a brokeish college student): 1. Dominion 2. Fluxx 3. Stratego 4. Secret Hitler 5. Blockus 6. Life 7. Trekking 8. Legacy Risk
Lords of Waterdeep Carcassonne with the Princess and the Dragon Adventure Land Archeology Lost Cities The Board Game Ticket to Ride Europe Clank! Alhambra Dice Town Jamaica
Biblios - Auction, Set Collection Boomerang - Card Drafting, Flip and Write Castles of Burgundy - Tile Laying, Dice Manipulation, Point Salad Cartographers - Polyominoes, Variable Scoring, Drawing/Colouring Karuba - Tile Laying, Bingo, Route Building, Family Game, Race Game Junk Art - Party Game, Dexterity Game Magic Maze - Party Game, Co-op, Real Time Thurn and Taxis - Route Building, Set Collection, Player Powers Splendor - Engine Building, Race Game, Set Collection Decrypto - Word Game, Co-op, Team Game, Party Game, Deduction
Nice list guys, you clearly love board games and I love hearing your opinions and experience of the games you play. I have a non-board gaming family I'm trying to convert. so I purchased several games. I started with Ticket to Ride as this was the most similar to the old family games they had played before. Forbidden island was next as an easy to play game, then Tucana to teach them new mechanics , castle panic to teach hand management and collaborate play , Flashpoint because the goal and rules are simple to learn but still has a randomness to the game is fun, and then Roll player to introduce playing with dice, hand management and strategy all together and to widen their horizons on what a board game can be. I also got Spirit island, but that was a mistake as its too advanced for where the are right now. I'm hoping to progress them to Everdell and Root soon, as that will it teach them the mechanics of area control, and worker placement and puts all the other mechanics together...oh and also because I really want to play those two games myself :)
This is probably the least controversial list you've ever done, just due to the inherent nature of the topic - someone who would create a completely different list could still completely agree with yours. That said, I'd definitely include Abyss and Downforce. Everybody sucks at buying games when they first get into the hobby. 7 or 8 years ago (I think?), the first two games we bought were Babel and Pandemic, not knowing anything about either. Pandemic is THE quintessential co-op game, and Babel is what you play with friends you never want to see again. We played Babel when we got back from the FLGS, and cracked the shrink on Pandemic last year - clearly did those in the right order.
A slightly different note, I just bought my first game with the intention of it being primarily part of a collection as opposed to it's main purpose being to be played. It's a game I've been interested in for a while but couldn't get my hands on it but your educational games video a while ago got me to look it up again. The game is Healing Blades: Defenders of Soma, it is a 2 player card game pitting paladins against monsters, but the monsters are named after real world bacteria and the paladins after real world antibiotics. With a background of medicine you would know which antibiotics are strong against specific bacteria, but this is also handled with iconography.
So... looking at my many games, I noticed, many of those Gateways had disappeared. Here is a list of games I think should start a collection because I don't think you will ever let them go: #10 - A great party game that works with large groups (I just divide them into teams and usually play host)... Wits and Wages #9 - A game I pull out at pubs just by carrying the cards and dice in a bag (I use a set of dice to mark the positions and don't use the minigames on the road)... Las Vegas Royale #8 - A game for 2 to many and for people of all ages (really love all the new boards)... Down Force #7 - Social Deduction can be hard to figure out and can causes a ton of unwanted pressure but not with this straightforward streamlined game... Don't Mess With Cthulhu #6 - How about a game that combines engine building with push your luck (it was almost that Q of Q game).... Space Base #5 - Is it dudes on a map or a card game with unusual scoring? It is pure fun with tons of replayability... Ethnos #4 - It's tile laying, worker placement, dice management, and it's unusual scoring that makes it feel like a race... Rajas of the Ganges #3 - It can become a collection all on its own and introduce people to many mechanics... Century: Spice Road #2 - It feels like a classic board game but allows people to explore what those classics should have been... The Godfather: Corleone's Empire #1 - You teach it and then you hand them the player card that gives them their choices but they have never seen such an open game of options (Where do you start?)... Council of 4 I love Taverns right now but I need two more years... same with Horrified. I thought about Clank In Space but I'm not sure about keeping it anymore... it's in a special pile of play me or I leave.
Said the dude who clicked on a top 10 video to hear about people’s opinions of games… kindly see yourself over to the various board game mime channels for less talking. I heard Harpo Marx got into the board game content creation space
Sagrada being similar to Sudoku, makes me think that maybe I should get this. My husband is a non-gamer, but will play once in a while. He loves Sudoku.
Just got into games, so I bought Codenames, Secret Hitler and Ticket to Ride. This list brought a lot of unique games to my attention that I haven't heard of since starting my research, so thanks so much!
Love you guys! You two know board games from a heart. Very good theme also and I think it could be repeated every 2-3 years with new games. Me (newbie in board gaming world) and my wife (non-gamer, almost hate gaming) got crazy in love with 7 Wonders Duel and recently added Azul and loving them both.
Hey Mirko welcome to the hobby we are so happy y'all are here and enjoying some games! We definitely want to repeat this one every so often and update the list!
@One Pip Wonder I know!! I cracked up so hard at that! These Murphs are so entertaining I don't care what they're talking about or what games they're playing!!...🤣🤣🤣
My first 3 games I brought are Pandemic, Railroad Ink and Parks. Already into games via my husband who has brought games for us to play and with the kids as well over the last 5 years. I keep adding things to my want list when I watch your videos😅
Great list. I started with Heroscape and Catan... neither of which I'd put on my starter list, which is obviously different from games I'd keep if I could only have 10 (cause you'll pry Heroscape from my cold... dead... hands... also, avenge my death). You asked... so it's your fault I'm about to ramble. 10. Celestia - It's a great push your luck that I find incredibly easy to teach. 9. Lovecraft Letter - Loveletter is so easy. Lovecraft letter lets you take it just a step further and allows a larger player count. 8. Dice Forge - Two actions: forge your dice or buy a card. It also has that LEGO appeal of taking your dice apart and making them new. 7. Space Base - It is by far the best of these type of games that I've played. I love it. It is my replacement for Catan. It doesn't have negotiation and trading but does have the main roll/get something aspect, but unlike Catan or Machi Koro, you're never going to get screwed. 6. Potion Explosion - "Oh, have you played Candy Crush? OK, you basically know how to play this game. It's Harry Potter Candy Crush" It's so much fun, and the marble gimmick is amazing and I wouldn't have it any other way. Pull a marble, make them explode and watch the chain effects. Drink a potion, do something really cool. 5. Azul - quick & simple drafting. I find almost anyone can enjoy this game. I gave this to a friend, who texted me and said I found the first game his wife enjoys playing. He said I did something He hadn't been able to do in 10 years of marriage. I enjoy the complexity the other versions bring to the table, but the original can't be beaten. It's so pure, making it a nearly perfect starter game. 4. Sagrada - For all the reasons you listed. Oh. This is such a good game. 3. Century Spice Road: Golem Edition (Sorry Nick) - I HATED Splendor. I found it painful to play. So when someone had me play this, I went into it begrudgingly. I went home and bought a copy. Simple choices. I love the puzzle of building your engine, then having to tactically change course when someone grabs the card you were building to. And didn't win this game for over a year. I didn't care. 2. Welcome To - I haven't' been able to try cartographers, but I could play this over and over again. It's my "Flip/Roll & Write" favorite. 1. Dixit - To be honest, I could probably make an entire list of almost all these style games: Detective Club, When I Dream, Muse, Obscurio, Mysterium... But Dixit is still my favorite. I enjoy getting to think of your clue and trying to make something that some might get and others won't. This is easily in my Top Ten of all time. I've played it more than any other game in my collection. I have almost every expansion. You could use these cards in Detective Club. Oh gosh. Does anyone want to play right now? Oh, you're stuck in your home. Ok. DAMN IT, PAULA!!! I've played all of these with new gamers, I've played most of them with my kids.
Thanks for the info! Any recommendations on additional dixit sets? I have number 1 and journey and we love them both. We want to add more but they’re are so many. Thanks for the info!!
Alternative version of their list Worker placement - lords of Waterdeep Filler - coup Sudoku? Puzzley familiar game - rummikub Engine builder - century spice road Party deduction game - code names Co-op game - burgle bros Push your luck - king of tokyo Yahtzee style game - king of Tokyo Tetris game - Santa Maria Gateway game - ticket to ride Bonus game as king of tokyo filled 2 of theirs Survive Escape from Atlantis (family game)
My first 10 games that kicked off the hobby for me.. 1. Pandemic 2. King of Tokyo 3. Biblios 4. SushiGo Party 5. Roll For It 6. Kingdomino 7. Lost Cities 8. Raptor 9. Viticulture 10. Hanimakoji all still in my collection good clip guys
I loved this episode!! I like that your list is not the same (ticket to ride or pandemic--those are both great, but everyone puts them in their videos). We like Prime Climb, Horrified and One Night Werewolf--we started this year because of the pandemic and now watch videos to pick new games. Prime Climb is the hands down favorite with everyone, super competitive and super fast. No set up and easy to learn. I found you guys when Mik and Starla recommended you. Great channel!!
Good idea and some fine choices. My choices are :- 1. Skull 2. One Night Ultimate Werewolf 3. Welcome To.. 4. Wingspan 5. Quacks 6. Just One 7. Horrified 8. Santorini 9. Sagrada 10. Empires of the North
Had the original Stop Thief back in the day. Other than Raiders, ill take a hard pass on the rest of your list, sorry...those games would be the collection to end my desire to play board games. Boring.
Great list guys. Couldn't agree more. Here is how I started. Carcossone Sagrada Stone Age Targi (2P) Hanamikoji or Jixia (2P) Herbaceous 7 wonders Lost Cities(2P) Parks Welcome to... A couple of 2players only games here but when you're starting out it may take some time to find a game group. So good to have some really good 2player games.
Love that the pan-down shot of Sagrada @ 8:43 shows purple-2 and blue-2 adjacent to each other! 🤣
I know you boys were wonderin' so I'mma let you know my top 10 games to start a collection:
10. Sushi Go
9. Fuse
8. Codenames
7. Forbidden Desert
6. Flip Ships
5. Welcome to...
4. Clank!
3. Wingspan
2. Azul
1. Patchwork (the real slim shady of polyomino/tetris games)
Oh... Flip Ships... I should have thought of that. Great choices.
Lol knew you would want Patchwork in here...
Wingspan prices have gone through the roof!
Patchwork is a great one
love codenames!! one of our first games to play!
Picked up a copy of the very cool Detective Club as a gift for a friend. Loved the recommendations!
Christmas is coming and I need to find games to gift.
Detective Club is on my radar now.
Can't Stop, Point Salad, Red 7, Star Realms, Archaeology, Lords of Waterdeep, Foodies, Abyss, The Isle of Cats, 7 Wonders.
Great list. I would do something like this, order doesn't matter:
10. Sagrada (pattern building with dice)
9. Five Tribes (unique mancala puzzle)
8. Raiders of the North Sea (worker placement)
7. Point Salad (filler set collection)
6. Werewords (party bluffing)
5. 7 wonders duel (2 player)
4. The Quacks of Quedlinburg (push your luck)
3. Century: Spice Road (deck building)
2. Barenpark (tile placement)
1. Wingspan (engine building, tableau building, upgrades, set collection, dice rolling, resource management, excell...whatever you want)
Honorable mention: Porto (amazing for introducing new players and...it's portuguese)
Five Tribes and Werewords came up during our formation of the list. 5 tribes is a great next level game!
Stone Age, Azul, Sagrada, either Century or Splendor, Detective Club, Ticket To Ride, Wingspan, Clank, Road to El Dorado, 7 Wonders, Welcome To, Dice Forge
We swapped out Stone Age for Raiders of the North Sea ,but Stone Age is a great choice nonetheless!
@@TheBrothersMurph interesting, I’ve been looking at Stone Age for my first worker placement game but might look at Raiders now.
LOL @ "France in a box!" Also, the Barenpark expansion really takes it next level!
It really does! It makes the game more thinky and longer. We just got the expansion and are really digging it!
My first 10 games that kicked off the hobby for me.. 1. Pandemic 2. King of Tokyo 3. Biblios 4. SushiGo Party 5. Roll For It 6. Kingdomino 7. Lost Cities 8. Raptor 9. Viticulture 10. Hanimakoji all still in my collection good clip guys
So you're saying most people don't start their collections by backing Gloomhaven? Lol
@@MrScrawnjuan I started my collection with gloomhaven
Cartographers, Azul, carcassone, Tiny Towns, Raiders of the North Sea and Architects of the West kingdom, Settlers of Catan, Point Salad, King Domino and My favorite Five Tribes!
Kingdomino was very close to making this list. As a gateway game it is just sooo easy to rope in new gamers!
Great list, guys! Here are my picks, if I had to pick 10 to start with that could help me get into the hobby:
10. Q.E.
9. Five Tribes
8. The Crew
7. On Tour
6. The Isle of Cats
5. Everdell
4. Wavelength
3. Downforce
2. Wingspan
1. Atlantis Rising 2e
Everdell was considered as our Worker Placement slot. A solid choice indeed!
Love the premise behind this video. I'm pretty new to the hobby, so it's perfect.
We are so happy to hear it and welcome
To the hobby!
Great lost I think mine would look like
10. Second Chance
9.Quacks
8.Wingspan
7. Luxor
6.Copenhagen
5.Cartographers

3.Azul Summer Pavillon
2.For Sale
1.Point Salad
For Sale is a great choice for a easy, small, overall popular game!
Citadels is probably one of my favorite party games and the one that got me into boardgames
This was one of the first games we had as well. We have found other social deduction games we like more but Citadels will also be a classic
My list (in no particular order) is somewhat diffrent.
Carcassonne
Azul
Ticket to Ride (VS or Europe)
Quacks of Quadlinburg
Quest for el Dorado
Escape: curse of the temple
Bärenpark*
Everdell*
Taverns of Tiefenthal
Deception: Murder in Hong Kong
The two titels with an * are still to be added to our collection.
Hé guys, I love the energy you put in your videos! Keep em coming.
Greetings from The Netherlands.
Fine here is the infalible list you need.
10: The Isle of Cats
9: Any Azul
8: Fast Sloths
7: Century Spice Road
6: Bunny Kingdom
5: Clank!
4: Quacks of Quedlinburg
3: Space Base
2: Lords of Waterdeep
1: Wingspan
Any Azul is a good answer. People just love that game
This is hard because I played some of what people call gateway games and didn't fall in love with gaming but then I tried some heavy games and now I'm addicted to gaming.
King of Tokyo to gateway game the kids in, our youngest was about 5 when we started playing this.
Oh btw that super gorgeous edition of High Society is from Osprey Games -- they have other super pretty productions like Cryptid, Lost Expedition, and Odin's Ravens
Great collection. I'd swap Raiders for Lords of Waterdeep. And Cartographers for Welcome To.
We have had an easier time teaching new people Cartographers over Welcome To, which is why we chose it. But Welcome To is a great choice!
My Selections:
10 (worker placement) architects of west kingdom
9 (filler) For Sale or Silver and Gold
8 (familiar/dead simple) Ticket to Ride or Azul
7 (engine builder) Wingspan, maybe Orleans
6 (party/social deduction) CodeNames, Dixit or Obscurio
5 (co-op) Flash Point fire rescue or Pandemic
4 (push your luck) Diamont/incan Gold...but I do really like Quacks
3 (Roll & Write) I haven't played it, but I'd go with Cartographers
2 (must have designer: Feld) Castles of Burgundy
1 (gateway) Splendor
This is a great list! Silver and Gold is a great choice for a filler or Roll and Write!
Please could you make a list of the top 10 most beautiful games? I ask because I’m not a hard core gamer but the artwork in Wingspan really drew me to the game and I’m curious to know if there are other games with great art design. By the way you guys are fun to watch. Thanks for the content.
Oops just found your top 10 board game art video from a year ago. I’ll go watch that. 👍🏼
@18:18
It's our go to co-op game now.
Q: I wonder how it measures up to The Loop, nowadays?
I mean, it has been three years since this vid was posted.
7 Wonders, Carcassonne, Pandemic are a few games I think is great to have
Great picks! I really want to pick up 7 Wonders Architects to have as a great approachable game for "non gamer (yet)" friends to try.
Carcasson? #! - getn with it, time moves on!
No particular order:.
10. Ticket to Ride
9. Catan
8. Lords of Water Deep
7. Citadels
6. King of Tokyo
5. DownForce
4. Splendor
3. Wingspan
2. Race for the galaxy
1. Azul
Great list! A bunch of these almost made our list!
something enlightening for a change. Thanks guys!
Thank YOU
I think Santorini and Century (SR or Golem) are great collection pieces. They are both simple enough to be gateways but deep enough to be fun for more advanced players. Especially Santorini where you can take out the god cards and play as a gateway then add in the god cards to ramp up the difficulty later.
I played a handful of games before I started my collection but my first ten were:
1) One Night Ultimate Werewolf
2) Ikusa
3) Sushi Go
4) Century SR
5) Terraforming Mars
6) Santorini
7) Munchkin (given to me)
8) Secret Hitler
9) Bang TCG
10) Pandemic w/On the Brink Exp. (bought from a friend as a set).
Out of those I've definitely gotten Century out more than the others, then Santorini, then Sushi Go. I have Azul SP but that and Sushi Go i don't find as fun as the other two or as essential.
Santorini was sooo close to making this list for that exact reason. Very simple, but has a heck of a lot of depth
STFU!!!!
The Wheelmen!!!
It's 12am and I'll just watchin somethin before goin to sleep.
I had to get up and open the game too see.....
You guys are inside one of my all time faves!!!
Recently picked up the remake, still own the original.
Ha! Sorry to make you get up but heck yeah we’re in there! Love the updated version :)
@@TheBrothersMurph same here
Actually has become the gateway game for my GF, that and Carcasonne
Right now my collection consists of Carcasonne, Ticket To Ride, Settlers of Catan, Sagrada, Splendor, and Pandemic. So I am looking to get Dominion next and then Architects of the West Kingdom, I cant get wingspan right now, although it is on my wishlist. I was thinking Terraforming Mars as well.
That is a great start! And it looks like you've got your next few games planned out! Keep it up!
I see i started a bit wrong...i started with Gloomhaven. Got a great deal on it though
Not wrong, just unconventional ;)
We also started with Gloomhaven, and then apparently swung into traitor games with Shadows Over Camelot and Betrayal at House on the Hill.
Top 10 Out of Print Games. I nominate Kung Fu Fighting by Slugfest games. A quick, silly themed card game about...well, y'know.
I just wanted to say thank you! I appreciate you guys, and your videos are a fun and small escape during a time of craziness! Keep up the great work fellas!!!
Thanks Curtis! We really appreciate you saying that!
Praise be to PWH!! No Broockles Ctookles, but many of his games could have easily been on this list
This was a great idea for a list (and a good list, itself)! Thanks!
If you were drunk in Milwaukee on a Tuesday, it would likely be on beer :-)
Stop Thief is from 1979....used a little battery operated "police scanner". Updated of course with an ap in 2017.
How come all these games are so great? Oh yeah, because the Brothers Murph like them.
oh gosh you stop it
Now I need an AP? We are over 40 - give me clue and apples to appels; forget high tech!
Space Base needs to be in here somewhere
We almost chose that over Wingspan as our "engine builder" choice. But there are so many different cards it can be overwhelming for new players. Plus Wingspan has a more unique theme and looks better. But you could very easily slot Space Base in there and it would be a great choice!
So good boys! Loved this list. Some new ones I've earmarked to buy soon.
Here's my list from my own collection that I would recommend for a starter's collection... in no order (read more to see my thoughts on each):
Carcassonne
Tiny Towns
Wingspan
Code Names
Sushi Go Party
6 Nimmt (6 Takes)
Zombie Dice
Wurfel Bohnanza
Parks
Mysterium
I'd agree with Carcassonne.
Great list!
Solid list
@@brianrainer glad you think so :)
Thanks for your list guys. I'm always looking for games to play with my family. They aren't always as interested in games like I am.
GOtta hook em in! Go with a theme that interests them!
Potion Explosion is a great choice! We always pitch that game to new gamers by saying "hey you know Candy Crush? This is kinda like that!"
Great list!!! You guys are reminding me that I really need to add Quacks to my collection
Yes. Yes you do :)
Imo, get all of Emerson Matsuuchi's games for the first like 7 of the 10. Then we can argue about the 2-3 spots left
Pretty much. Emerson rules
I have not played Carcassone....also this is a solid list for sure. I would add Grimm Forest or Downforce to this list. Both are extremely accessible and the fun factor is super high but there's also some depth to them as well
Grimm Forest could definitely be on this list!
That's awesome! I still have a copy of the original Stop Thief and the sound generator still works : ] A friend recently told me to check out some table games, so thanks for the video as I try to find a game to get into.
Heck yeah! Try the new one if you can! The app even plays the retro sounds if you want it to!
Woe Woe! How am I just finding yalls channel?? Great video guys. I really thought this was going to be a typical list video but it really surprised me. Even some ive never even heard of! Wish yall had links so when I buy em y'all get street-cred.
Our List:
10) Above & Below or Near & Far
9) Unearth
8) Dominion
7) 7 Wonders
6) Sheriff of Nottingham
5) Colt Express
4) Las Vegas
3) Chronicles of Crime
2) Grimm Forrest
1) Splendor
Liked the list. Really surprised Space Base was not on there for you.
Michael West we definitely thought about it. There’s just a few too many cards that are a little confusing to explain but if we did another list of games it could easily show up. It’s so solid
I would put at least one dexterity game and one game for when a kid is around. Junk art I really like.
That's so cool. The new one works great and even has the old school sounds you can use to get extra nostalgic. super fun
@@TheBrothersMurph Yeah, I'm wondering if the phone app works with the old board and components?
First 8 games I've bought (because I only own 8 games as a brokeish college student):
1. Dominion
2. Fluxx
3. Stratego
4. Secret Hitler
5. Blockus
6. Life
7. Trekking
8. Legacy Risk
Heck of a good start!
Great video guys, definitely options ill look into. No Pandemic though?
Definitely could have been on the list and almost was! It's still one of our favorite games!
Tiny Towns, Kingdomino, King of Tokyo, Dragon Farkle, Tsuro, Resistance..
Settlers of Catan, then The knights expansion. Best starter game that most people should have owned or played.
It's one of the first games we had minus the Knights Expansion
Lords of Waterdeep
Carcassonne with the Princess and the Dragon
Adventure Land
Archeology
Lost Cities The Board Game
Ticket to Ride Europe
Clank!
Alhambra
Dice Town
Jamaica
Adventureland is a GREAT choice! Such an underrated game
I think Ticket to Ride U.S. is better for starters because of the openness, especially when playing with 4 players
@@davidgreenberg8456 That's fair. When playing Europe with first timers we'll usually leave out the train stations as they tend to confuse people
backgammon, hive, hnefatafl, too many poops
those are my top ten
Watching 🎉
Best games to start your collection is kingdomino 7w duel and Jamaica imo
Biblios - Auction, Set Collection
Boomerang - Card Drafting, Flip and Write
Castles of Burgundy - Tile Laying, Dice Manipulation, Point Salad
Cartographers - Polyominoes, Variable Scoring, Drawing/Colouring
Karuba - Tile Laying, Bingo, Route Building, Family Game, Race Game
Junk Art - Party Game, Dexterity Game
Magic Maze - Party Game, Co-op, Real Time
Thurn and Taxis - Route Building, Set Collection, Player Powers
Splendor - Engine Building, Race Game, Set Collection
Decrypto - Word Game, Co-op, Team Game, Party Game, Deduction
We've never gotten to play Biblios but have always wanted to!
Where are you guys in Stop Thief?
You want co-op - give me HORRIFIED! OR PANDEMIC!
Ha! We have always stayed away from Babel for that reason.
weird to have none of the mentioned games =( interested to get cartographers and carcassone now.
Hey that's alright! we also started with virtually none of these games. Everyone has their own gaming journey
Damn, you guys get to play light games between heavier games? I generally can't even get anyone to play any games.
Real Talk!
+1 VP for using the word "Grok" in a Top Ten List. +2 VP for Drinking Wisconsinbly.
Ha!!
@@TheBrothersMurph *TackleHugs*!
Sushi Go Party. Forbidden Island. Century Spice Road. Ice Cool.
Ice Cool is a great choice! So fun and ridiculous!
splender has simple mechanics tough choices.
Truth!
This seems super cool Fuzzy!
So... looking at my many games, I noticed, many of those Gateways had disappeared. Here is a list of games I think should start a collection because I don't think you will ever let them go:
#10 - A great party game that works with large groups (I just divide them into teams and usually play host)... Wits and Wages
#9 - A game I pull out at pubs just by carrying the cards and dice in a bag (I use a set of dice to mark the positions and don't use the minigames on the road)... Las Vegas Royale
#8 - A game for 2 to many and for people of all ages (really love all the new boards)... Down Force
#7 - Social Deduction can be hard to figure out and can causes a ton of unwanted pressure but not with this straightforward streamlined game... Don't Mess With Cthulhu
#6 - How about a game that combines engine building with push your luck (it was almost that Q of Q game).... Space Base
#5 - Is it dudes on a map or a card game with unusual scoring? It is pure fun with tons of replayability... Ethnos
#4 - It's tile laying, worker placement, dice management, and it's unusual scoring that makes it feel like a race... Rajas of the Ganges
#3 - It can become a collection all on its own and introduce people to many mechanics... Century: Spice Road
#2 - It feels like a classic board game but allows people to explore what those classics should have been... The Godfather: Corleone's Empire
#1 - You teach it and then you hand them the player card that gives them their choices but they have never seen such an open game of options (Where do you start?)... Council of 4
I love Taverns right now but I need two more years... same with Horrified. I thought about Clank In Space but I'm not sure about keeping it anymore... it's in a special pile of play me or I leave.
Hell of a list Eric!
Please for the love of Stefan Feld (lol), fill in that blank space on the wall. It is driving me insane.
vanyaserra1 never
Pandemic!!! 🤯
Aah, another video by Trailerpark Jesus and Discount Jack Black 😀
Aah, another awkward comment on a video by a rando on the internet who thinks they’re clever 😀
What, no Captain Sonar!?! jk jk!! Great list guys! Thanks
Ha! Such a massive game!
“Evangelism/it is basically a cult” - brothers Murf-
Board Games = Best Cult.
We have 30 games and own none of these 😂
You folks talk too much!
Said the dude who clicked on a top 10 video to hear about people’s opinions of games… kindly see yourself over to the various board game mime channels for less talking. I heard Harpo Marx got into the board game content creation space
Why call this "Top 10 Games to Start Your Collection" if it's not a "TOP" list? Just call it the "Best" games or "recommended".
Sagrada being similar to Sudoku, makes me think that maybe I should get this. My husband is a non-gamer, but will play once in a while. He loves Sudoku.
You MUST get Sagrada! I didn't think my husband would like it but he usually kicks my butt at it. It's such a great game, (and so pretty!)...❤
It's a great selling point! Go for it!
I have all these games. I guess the foundation of my collection is intact.
I would recommend a combat themed game, personally King of Tokyo. KoT always goes over well especially with newer gamers under 30.
KoT was probably 11th or 12th. Could totally be on this list!
Just got into games, so I bought Codenames, Secret Hitler and Ticket to Ride. This list brought a lot of unique games to my attention that I haven't heard of since starting my research, so thanks so much!
we love Secret Hitler, so fun!
"wine drunk, on a Tuesday in Milwaukee" lol nice vid guys! thank you!
@One Pip Wonder I know!! I cracked up so hard at that! These Murphs are so entertaining I don't care what they're talking about or what games they're playing!!...🤣🤣🤣
Lol Thank you Wendy! We really appreciate you saying that!
Great list!
We have the exact same pitch for Potion Explosion. "Hey you kids like Candy Crush!?!?!?"
Thanks for the info! Any recommendations on additional dixit sets? I have number 1 and journey and we love them both. We want to add more but they’re are so many. Thanks for the info!!
@@PaulyC8879 I tend to buy every Dixit set, but I'd say two of my favorites were Revelations & Anniversary sets.
@@Meeple-Konrad great, Thanks! I suppose getting them all is an option too. Lol
Alternative version of their list
Worker placement - lords of Waterdeep
Filler - coup
Sudoku? Puzzley familiar game - rummikub
Engine builder - century spice road
Party deduction game - code names
Co-op game - burgle bros
Push your luck - king of tokyo
Yahtzee style game - king of Tokyo
Tetris game - Santa Maria
Gateway game - ticket to ride
Bonus game as king of tokyo filled 2 of theirs
Survive Escape from Atlantis (family game)
King of Tokyo and Ticket to Ride were both verrrry close to making this list!
Baren Park is just so great. Great video! Shared on Facebook already. :)
Thanks for the share Steve!
Good idea and some fine choices. My choices are :-
1. Skull
2. One Night Ultimate Werewolf
3. Welcome To..
4. Wingspan
5. Quacks
6. Just One
7. Horrified
8. Santorini
9. Sagrada
10. Empires of the North
Ahhh no - this is impossible to decide on. Welcome To is out and On Tour is in.
Hahaha! This list was extremely hard to make! We had to leave out so many games!
Had the original Stop Thief back in the day. Other than Raiders, ill take a hard pass on the rest of your list, sorry...those games would be the collection to end my desire to play board games. Boring.
Great list guys. Couldn't agree more. Here is how I started.
Carcossone
Sagrada
Stone Age
Targi (2P)
Hanamikoji or Jixia (2P)
Herbaceous
7 wonders
Lost Cities(2P)
Parks
