- How to create SPIKES! Soldering - Spiky Jewelry Tutorial SOFT soldering
Well well well.... It was not as smooth as I expected. Spikes and smooth live in two different universes - I should have known!
lol
Anyway, here is my attempt with some ups and downs and trouble shooting.
Very cool.
Very sharp.
Very dangerous to wear! So please be careful.
But they do look very unique and I do get the hype.
In this video we will:
1. Learn about perfect temperature with what we can build our spikes
2. Learn about special soldering iron tip ( I used chiseled one)
3. Learn that spikes could be a pain in the ass to make
4. Learn that they are very brittle if not soldered with at the right temperature
5. Learn how to mitigate fragility of the spikes
6. Attempt creating beads
7. Figure out iron setting and technique to make beads and spikes and soldering texture
I hope I inspired to make something cool. If you are going to create spikes, please make sure to file them with some sand paper or dremel or both.
Here is the list of supplies and materials I used in this video.
Every product and tool is tested and loved by me. These are the best soldering tools ;)

I think trial and error is how we learn, your results really were good.😊
Thank you! It was struggle. Will continue to try to crack "beads" code. Cause they are not as big and smooth as I would like them to be :)
I’ve wanted to do this for years and finally I can find a tutorial for this technique.
Like always its a great video! I love your tutorials! Never stop doing them!! I learn so much plus you're fun to listen to! You have a fantastic personality and a fun sense of humor! Thank You for everything you teach me (us)!!
Hahaha! Thank you so much! I am a wild one! 🤓♥️😂I appreciate your sweet comment so much! This helps me to keep going! 🙏🏻♥️🥰🥰🥰
Hello I loved the class, we learn together that is wonderful. Great job. Kathy from Cali.😎
Thank you so much!!
Loved your new video! Learning together is super fun and engaging. I am trying the stamping in to solder now. It's very cool! I think it is my new favorite with soft soldering. Let me know if you try it. You just plop a bunch of solder in an area. Then heat it up until it's a molten, melted, shiny pool. Quickly press a red rubber stamp in to it and push down. It now looks like the design of the stamp! Beautiful .
I love your content so much
Awww! This makes me so happy!!
Enjoy watching your videos. 👍
this is wonderful, a fantastic tutorial ❤❤❤
Awww!! Thank you!!! ♥️🥰🥰🥰
I love your video!🥰 I was trying to make drops on my pieces, but I always ended up with spikes because I wasn't using an adjustable temp soldering iron. Like you said,...not practical for jewelry. I tried it, and snagged my clothes and hurt myself,...not fun. But I still love the aesthetic of it, so I used the spikes on art instead. Yes, it could still cause injury,...so it's a handle with care and at your own risk, type of item,... however those spikes look awesome as texture on art!!
I just got my new flux and patina in the mail today, so it's crazy you were working on textures, because that's exactly what I'm going to be attempting! Yaaaassss, I'm so excited!!😅😂 I'm like you in that respect,... even if it doesn't turn out like I plan, I learn something from it. I just want to have fun creating and experimenting. So I appreciate you just sharing it like it is. Sometimes people only show when it works perfectly, but I for one, like seeing whats real,... that's what we learn from. Lol, 😅 frustration is part of the creative process. Makes the victories sweeter, right?!
When I was attempting the solder dots and they didn't turn out, I used a file to flatten them out some, and then burnished them with the back of a stainless steel spoon. It softened the edges and brought up the shine, so it still made an interesting organic texture on my pieces. So even "mistakes" can turn into something good sometimes.
Since textures is one of the things I'm going to be working on, I'll let you know if I figure anything out. I've been watching alot about it and getting the temp right is one thing (which that of course can vary for everyone), and the other thing I've seen is that if your soft round top isn't forming on the ball, ...to add flux to the ball and touch it again,...helps the solder flow and round out they say.
Lol... I'm sure we'll figure it out!
( I've called them, dots, drops and balls, so far,...lol, but yeah, decorative textures for solder is definitely something I'm interested in right now.) Loved the video, Eugenia!💖💃✨✨✨
Hahaha! We are ALWAYS on the same waive length!! I will try your trick with beads/balls/droplets ugh! They were the most frustrating part!!! That;s so clever to file them slightly and the polish. I was also thinking to go with MORE solder once I would get over my fraustration but then me and the soldering iron both cooled off and I left it as is! lolol
you would think simple things can take so much trial and error. I am on the mission to crack that code though lol like you said.
I am also on the mission to turn our silver solder into gold. Will do some off camera experiments and IF i succeed I will share. I have been getting a lot of comments on how to make gold jewelry. I want to make some gold pieces too. So fingers crossed!
And yes! Maybe for art objects spikes are ok, but for everyday wear I dont know. But they DO looks so cool.
I am so glad that I was able to solve the brittleness! They are VERY sturdy after me adding solder to the foot of each spike.
So excited for you to make something with texture!! I would love to see! Lets connect on Etsy again soon!
Why would YT not have DMs like why!? lol
Happy holidays! Thank you so much for your support as always!!!! Hugs!!!
@@eugeniaedits Oh my gosh, you crack me up! 😂 Thank you, I needed the smiles to start my day off with. 💖🥰
I know, the frustration is so much sometimes! What's crazy is how much the room temperature affects the soldering as well! What works one day doesn't necessarily work the next.🙄
I did learn a thing that might be helpful, but I'll have to try it out first. I actually learned it from trying to resin the artwork on my rock pendants.....the resin won't cure the same at cooler temperatures, even the UV resin does better at warmer temperatures. ( Humidity can effect it too🙄) Anyway, it doesn't like the cooler surface temp of the rocks. So, I tried heating my pendants in front of a portable room heater before resining, and it worked! I've also seen people using little coffee cup warmers to warm the resin as well, and it makes a big difference in the end results. I know you work with resin, so it may be something that helps you out that way, (or maybe you already know about that). But what I was thinking is to try it on the pieces we are soldering,...by placing the components we are working with( stones, wires, rings, etc) on a hot pad for awhile before starting to solder them. If they are already warm, then I think it might affect how well the solder flows, because the iron won't have to do all the work to heat the area being soldered,...does that make sense? Also I have seen (from watching way too many videos...lol) that both using flux often and a lot during the process, as well as cleaning and tinning the tip of the iron often while working, makes the whole process a lot easier,....so I plan to make those things more of a habit while I'm working on things. Maybe you can try it too n see if it makes a difference in what you're working on.
Lol, DM's on UA-cam might be more trouble that they are worth, with all the trolls out there being negative. But definitely, I'll have to get in touch on Etsy n show you how things go. I was so excited to get to creating and experimenting last night, because I finally have all the upgraded equipment and supplies,.. then I got hit with a migraine from hell.😤🤬 Still have it this morning, n trying to knock it out 😕,...so hopefully by tonight I'll feel good enough to finally try everything out. I'm so sulky,...like a kid that got to open the coolest present ever, but then not being allowed to play with it. Everything is all set up on my desk,...just taunting me.🥺🥺🥺 Stupid migraines!
Oh,...making gold jewelry would be awesome! I have seen people making brass jewelry at home, and I have also seen people doing actual gold electroplating. I haven't gotten too far into researching it yet, so I'm not sure if lead free solder can be electroplated or really a lot about the process. Definitely sounds cool though. I saw you gold leafed some of your pieces. Does it hold up well? Did you seal it with some kind of protective coating? I'm very interested in seeing what you come up with. Trials
and errors and all of that.👍😊
I have also been looking at copper electroforming, because .... So cool what you can make!!🤩😍 I am watching videos and learning,... but I'm holding back on jumping in on it, because I've just upgraded a lot of my equipment and supplies. I've already invested and spoiled myself, and I've got some great tools,...so I gotta slow my roll.😅😅😅 Way too many things I want to learn!!😂😂😂
I did learn that there's a copper patina for soft solder though, so I think I can invest a little into that as it's not all that expensive. If you are interested in it, I learned that it works well with Silvergleem lead free solder, but not with other lead free solders. It's called copper bright patina, from Novacan. I wish they had a gold or brass patina, but as of yet I haven't found one.😕
I'll quit rambling now. But looking forward to any new creative processes you learn! 😁✨💃💖 I always appreciate your insights and all the great energy you bring into my life with your videos! 💖🫂So thank you for being you n spreading the good vibes!! Have an awesome day sweetie!!
Thank you for showing us reality!! It’s so refreshing 🫶🏻❤️
hahaha! It was so frustrating when I saw them breaking!!! lol Spikes are a weird thing! Thank you so much for your sweet comment! :)
It is frustrating but it’s nice to not be frustrated alone 😂 you’re style is amazing love seeing your entire process ❤ appreciate you 🫶🏻
🥹🥹🥹 Thank you!! Hahaha! This makes me cry! You are so sweet! I appreciate you too!❤️❤️❤️❤️

1:19 I'm new to soldering and you mentioned that you taped it up as always, is there a specific type of tape that I have to use? Such as copper tape etc. what tape did you use in the video?
it's copper tape :))
Thank you so much for sharing everything! What is the best metal to use to make ring blanks? I'd like to make my own & not use sterling silver or sterling silver plated.
Hi! I don’t have experience making ring bases yet! But! You can wrap few stainless steel wires with copper tape and make a ring that way. The only issue would be making sure it’s super polished because since it would be in direct contact with your finger and it would be moving around it has to be super smooth.
To smooth it out sand it using very fine 2500 up sand paper and possibly Dremel. I hope this helps ♥️♥️
Is the white noise or the rush in the background on purpose? Ive never been able to stay so focused on a tutorial. Thank you, its amazing
Oh!! Hahaha! Sorry probably my fan I was filming in my studio so it's not too insolated. Sorry for any background noises but I am so glad it did not bother you!🥰
really great tutorial! if i may ask, how many millimeters was the solder wire you were using?
Hi! Thank you! I always use EASTMAN Flo Safe Solder, Tin and Copper, 85311 EASX1, Silver. I think it's 5 mm in diameter? :)
Hi may I ask which soldering iron you used? :)
Which wire do you use and how thick the wire is pls help ...
Hi love! I use lead free soldering wire. Check out the video description. Link is in there 🫶🏻
@eugeniaedits tqsm
@shifalisspace of course! ♥️
Thanks for sharing your knowledge :) What kind of solder are you using?
Hi! I use this solder wire LEAD FREE SOLDER★ Flo Safe Lead-Free Solder
Here is a link amzn.to/3YW0Tgl.❤️
Which type of soldering wire did you use?
Can i use bathroom tiles instead of a mat for soldering?
i love your chanel and i am getting my equipement to start this hobby:) what temperature do you set in your soldering station? is that celsius or farenheit??
what temperature is best for creating spikes?
Hi! It tends to be different from iron to iron, but for me it's usually 750 f. Try to get your soldering iron to the highest temp and then adjust by 50 degrees and see if this forms spikes, if it doesnt - do another 50 :)
hii, can I use tin solder to make jewellery? or do i need to buy silver solder? Thank you
Thank you for the video!! It was very helpful:D
I was wondering… can you do this on a canvas? Will it burn or do you know if you need to put something first to protect it?
Hi:) you should be able to solder on canvas but you would need keep the iron on the lowest setting to avoid burning the canvas:)
@@eugeniaedits thank you so much!!!
Hii what metal are you using?? ♡
You're using flux solder right?
I am new here where can I find those nice broken China??
Hi! You can get plates at any thrift store and break them :)
@@eugeniaedits I not seen any nice old place around where I live! There are places you may know ow who sells them on line? Please help
Hello. Are you able to make balls with this soldering iron? I have a soldering iron max 480 F (like ypurs) and it doesn’t work for me.
One question, what is that gold thing around the piece??????? I did everything to make the soldering wire stick to my piece, but it doesn't stick
its copper tape! you need it for the solder to stick to your pieces
How do I do this but in gold? So I get gold tape and that’s all?
Hi! there is no gold solder, you would have to paint with liquid gold leaf and seal it with resin:)
hiii plz make diy alabaster watch, like spike dragon claw watch $2000 maybe u can try make diy one thank you🙏🏻
Cool idea! I did not know they exist. I will try to make something inspired by it and will film if I succeed :))
I’m gonna be trying to do this
u r amazing!!!!!!!
Awww! Thank you so much!!! 🥰🥰🥰
maybe add more flux
