These judges are being overly kind. If you read between the lines, Letitia James should be disbarred and criminally charged because it was taxpayer money that funded this weaponization of her office. This isn’t just about ensuring Trump is compensated-he lost so much time and part of his life defending himself against this lawfare. Judge Engoron should not only be disbarred and permanently banned from serving on the bench, but he should also lose his law license and be barred from ever teaching at a university, lecturing, or profiting in any way from the crimes he committed. Watching Letitia’s subordinate attorneys struggle to defend themselves against the most basic questions from the panel of appellate judges makes it clear that this has nothing to do with the law but is an effort to carry out orders from above.

And it needs to be emphasized that as well as limited funds, (which means someone misses out on an opportunity for a loan because Trump broke the rules), the finance companies will ultimately start losing money if all businesses did the same as Trump, because their actuarial tables will all be redundant, because they will be taking on bigger risk that they think they are absorbing. Trump's argument can be summarized as "Because I'm the only crook doing it, finance companies can safely absorb the extra risk they are unknowingly taking on board, so therefore I am innocent".

The real losers were in fact his competitors in the real estate business anywhere in the US. The law seeks to make a level playing field for all businesses at the same time protecting the banks for all the people. The risk is that these dangerous loans recreate the situation that caused Bush's GFC, maybe on a smaller scale, but just as foolish. All businesses live as close to the edge as possible to such laws because that way they operate in the same environment. Tax laws, contract laws, environmental protection laws all serve the same purpose of protecting the state for the people and still allowing businesses to operate.

True. James Carville said he was so odious he deserved none of the general humanity that one accords to another as he was incapable of reciprocating. Any I’ll that befalls trump I will applaud as karmic justice.

I think one of the weirdest opening statements asking why the judgment was so high is surprising. I think the first question should have been is Letitia James out on bond or bail and when did Judge Engeron formally lose his law license in New York? I can’t believe that Letitia James got away with this so far as she did.

Either we have laws and rules that we all obey equally, or we have an Oligarchy which allows SOME to break the laws and rules but punishes others for the same behavior. THIS is NOT equal justice under the law.

Plenty of victims! Everyone who didn’t lie about their assets and was then denied a loan is a victim! Why should the fine go down ? Is this some kind of pity party for the billionaire who made his money by committing fraud? Wasn’t his business convicted on multiple other counts earlier? If they reduce the fine they are just reinforcing the idea that we have different justice for the rich and powerful!
