  • What are the negative sides of living in Iceland? If you’re an expat contemplating living in Iceland, you’re in for a new lease of life. You’re, no doubt, excited about living in Iceland. But don’t move too quicky and be absolutely joyful. There are worst things about living in Iceland that might almost convince you not to move to Iceland after all.
You’ve surely heard many wonderful things about Iceland. You’ve read or watched videos about its attractions and attributes. Yes, the country keeps topping the list as the best at this and most peaceful at that. However, what are some of the worst things about living in Iceland? What do immigrants consider most annoying about their new home? Could there ever be reasons not to move to Iceland? Please enjoy this video as I itemize them.
    1. Weather
In Iceland, weather is unpredictable, that’s shared knowledge. The unpredictability of the Icelandic weather tops the list of worst things about living in Iceland because it’s what Icelanders complain about most. Even if they whine about politics, housing, or state finances, they whinge loudest about the weather that hampers their social life.
Just imagine yourself summering on the island only to find scorching sun and an ice-cold wind pouncing on you at the same time as though they are competing for superiority. Or, consider this scenario: You wake up to bright sunshine and dress accordingly for the day. But while leaving the house, you find that out it’s raining. And so, you rushed back to the closet and put on a gabardine raincoat and wellies. Then, the heat returns before you arrive at work. After taking them off, later in the day, it starts to snow. Now, how does it feel living in that country? That’s a typical day in Iceland.
    2. Services are very slow
You can’t get things done so fast in Iceland. Following the due process can be nauseatingly slow. Even the Internet that is considered fast has too restrictive download limits in Iceland. Internet subscription plans available usually slow down as you approach the limit of the amount of data you bought. Driving too is slow. Most things are just too slow for visitors. That’s one of the worst things about living in Iceland for someone from a fast-paced part of the world.
    3. Very expensive
Another one of the worst things about living in Iceland is the high cost of living. The natural expectation could be that in more remote areas, the cost of living should be lower. How wrong that is in Iceland! It’s very expensive to live in the country. Yes, salaries are high there. Unfortunately, the high living costs have also mopped up the high salaries.
Many of the products and services taken for granted in other European countries are incredibly overpriced here. You have to spend a lot on healthcare and apartment rental. For instance, if you don’t have an EU citizen, you’ll pay a lot to access healthcare. Some take advantage of certain situations and charge as much as $1500 to let out their garages or basements being used as studios.
    4. Food
Before you criticize Iceland for the low quality of food, don’t forget that it’s an island and there is a limit to the food that can be grown there. However, that’s one of the worst things about living in Iceland. This is a common complaint on the lips of expats and other foreigners living in Iceland. They’re severely limited in the quality and selection of foods compared with the situation in the US and other EU countries.
Much of the quality food people eat on the island is imported. That, unfortunately, means that you can't eat fresh food as those imported vegetables and fruits have to be frozen. This, again, badly affects the quality.

Rotten egg smell from all the sulfur gas. For example, the hot water in the hotel shower was quite pungent.

I don't think that frozen food is of inferior quality. That more applies to canned food. Vegetables and fruits that are frozen are frozen at the height of their flavor and nutritional value, so you don't suffer that loss.

If anyone here is considering moving to Iceland, please just don't. I moved there and instantly regretted it and moved back. The people are cold and so is the climate.

I don't blame them being worried about the Is@m0ph0bia. They don't have a good track record.
