Funny you should say that. Couple days ago I decided to travel .6 miles into the hardwoods next to a soybean field now covered in snow. Judging by the snow NO ONE has stepped foot into it and deer were digging up the snow for food. I did find 75-90 Beds with in 300 yards, littered with fecal matter and a mess of deer track in all directions. Some heavier than others. There are some signs of new and old rubs to.

Thanks Jeff. I’m in Pa and I’ve come across a spot scouting over the holidays just as you described in this video. I’ll be hanging out there in late archery. I hung a trail camera and have some good bucks visiting. My fall spot there is zero sign again as you stated. You’re spot on as always with stating to “stay mobile”.

Hi Jeff, this year I experienced one of these hot spots late season. The main movement was from lower flats up ridges to upper flats from 2:30 pm until dark - like 50-100 feet change in elevation. One thing I noticed is that the main food source for the first feeding in the evening for these deer was red oak acorns that were on the ground. I learned that the red oak acorns loose their bitterness after awhile. The white oak acorns were cleaned up, but the red oak acorns were plentiful. Thanks for doing your videos!

Great Videos and Awesome Books. If anyone thinks these videos are informative (I agree) then you will love the books. I gave two books out to family members as a way for us to all have a similar background knowledge. Now when we talk about our shared hunting land, we all speak the same language and abide by the same principles. It has made working on our land even that much more fun!

Jeff, thanks for sharing all your knowledge. Have watched religiously for a year now. I bought a 120 year old farmhouse w/20 acres in Allegany County NY a year ago. Plan is to retire there. This year was my most frustrating year of deer hunting in my 55 years of life. Busted my butt the last year on habitat. I know i still have a long way to go. Had turkeys eat at least 150 lbs of winter rye seed so plots were terrible. Two turkeys in the freezer though. My neighbors don't hunt well (heavy atv use)and sit on the borders but by far, the worst thing and I didn't know this when I bought it......I have 140 acres across the street that nobody has hunted in 4 years. It is posted and private and has great cover. It's truly a sanctuary. I know in 5 years my property will hold a lot of those deer but I cant go 5 years with what went on this past year. Any suggestions on how to handle this? I have my ideas.....most involve hunting elsewhere until I get mine the way I want it......one involves a climber and trespassing.
Again, thanks for all you do on here. It really is appreciated.

Your videos have helped me learn so much. I’m hunting a place where every hunter I’ve talked has told me “there’s no herd here anymore”. And yesterday I seen 5 doe. But how do I hunt these deer from the ground with a bow. The public land nearest to me and where I typically hunt doesn’t have very many trees I could get a stand into with a climber. I don’t have much extra cash to throw at hunting so I really have to use what I got. But thanks for all the help

I have hit.so much public land this year it's crazy. All the public land I have walked miles and miles of it and no matter how I feel I go into it someone is already there with a stand or a blind. South east Michigan had a big area to hunt but I swear every inch is torn up by people. You almost have to pattern the people and go in first and where you expect them to push the deer right to you.

Here in Maine, the ground freezes up during deer season and tracks are hard to come by, at least in the Northern half of the state, and deer densities are around 0-6 per square mile. It is tough hunting. You pray for a little snow just to find some tracks to confirm if you are wasting your time or not. I am a Paraplegic hunter. I can walk short distances with crutches but not very far so tracking is out of the question. Also once the snow starts accumulating in November the deer start moving to winter ranges of large cedar thickets and swamps. It is a challenge, to say the least for me. I do realize I need to educate myself on what deer like to eat in the Fall and Winter time of the year. Do you have any books or suggestions on a book that will help me identify these kinds of plants and or trees?

Bait can make the deer go nocturnal if you are not careful. Better to spread the stuff on a 1/4 acre patch than one spot. Think of it as artificial acorns, they gotta spend time smelling each piece and nosing it out of the leaves just like acorns. Much much better use of bait and the deer don't go nocturnal as hard as when you just dump a pile somewhere. My thoughts anyway.

    • @Gsxrnoob

Glen Swenson to better explain it the house sits on top of a hill overlooking the fields and then behind the fields are the 20 acres of woods. So even with the switch grass they’ll still see the house since it sits up above it on the hillside.

@@Gsxrnoob I am a bowhunter, I hunt flat land big ag country with a river that runs through the area. The only patches of woods are the farm steds, other than the river bottom. I always see the deer stay on the edges of the woods, and within 50 to a hundred yards from the house. My thought is the deer stay next to cover even if they see your house. You should watch Jeff's top 5 ways to build deer bedding on small parcels. #1 is what I'm refering to with switch grass and leafy greens and I think you'd hold some does on your 2 to 3 acres. Even if they can see your house they would have cover and feel safe. He talks about managing the woods for the rest of that video and having high stem counts.
