In this installment of Essential Classical Music, I cover the best recordings of Hindemith's Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber. This video is taken from my larger video covering the major orchestral works and their best recordings. Featured conductors include Szell and Hindemith.

Ormandy's second recording of this work, I think, is superior to his Columbia recording. It's on EMI, and it's fantastic.
That said, Hindemith's TRUE symphonic masterpiece is not the Symphonic Metamorphosis, but in fact, is his Symphony Mathis der Maler. For that, you should look to the remarkable recording on DGG by Steinberg and the Boston Symphony.

Hi! - Thanks for this! I "discovered" you recently and I'm working through your helpful videos. I wonder if you would consider adding a Hi-Res recommendation as well, if you have one. I realize that might double your research time, but I thought I'd ask. 😉
P.S. very pleased to see Hindemith come up in my subscriptions page today!

My favourite so far is William Steinberg conducting the Boston Symphony Orchestra. A beautiful recorded and powerful rendition.
