Haydn tends to be a victim of neglect these days, the earlier symphonies in particular. Thanks, Gil, for throwing some light on them.

It's puzzling that so many pleasing and amazingly creative works do not attract more classical music fans. Part of the problem is that The Composer is the victim of his own prolific output.

I would also recommend Sir Charles McKerras on Telarc, with the Hornsignal Symphony sharing the CD. The recording is fabulous, the conducting is superb, and the repeats are retained.

I would recommend most any recording by Mackerras. He was dependably exceptional across a broad repertoire. He cut his teeth in the craft as a student of the great Václav Talich, who was teacher and mentor to a number of other outstanding conductors as well.

@@leestamm3187 I agree and I own a lot of the Telarc recordings by McKerras, including all of Mozart's symphonies and several more CDs of Haydn's symphonies. I also have most of the Janacek operas with McKerras. You're right: he never seemed to have a bad recording session.

I have to disagree. The Hanover Band recordings have not stood the test of time. Most modern recordings done in the authentic period style are far superior in technical playing and interpretation. Sorry mate
