I remember doing crochet patterns in the 60’s. And I had to get someone to read it to me so I could understand what I was supposed to do as I tried to do it. I’m surprised I still crochet.

I love this whole series for so many reasons. Especially interesting today (as I frog a jumper for the fifth time - cursed yarn) is the differences in pattern writing style. I’ve always assumed not being able to understand a pattern is my own stupidity. But perhaps I’m not entirely at fault. Congratulations on the subscribers. You deserve many many more.

I agree with you. I'm also a fellow 76 year old Aussie. I love vintage crochet and just found this channel a couple of days ago. I've got some written 1960's crochet patterns that I found in my stash just last week. Must be a sign to keep crocheting!

Haha that section of confusion over the crochet double speak was hilarious! Well done for getting past that point. I started yelling ‘it’s a belt!’ on round two, couldn’t you hear me? 😂

A little hint on reading patterns…use a light pencil to mark through every little step you finish, it really helped me to get through the tougher patterns. I could easily erase the light marks when I was done, so no harm. I also make a working copy of each pattern I’m working on, I can write on it all I want. Also I can take my crocheting anywhere without having to take my nice books! 💚 I love your show and have been binge watching the last 2 days! I also love the Vintage patterns! 💚💚💚
I totally understand how frustrating those wordy patterns can be! I think the issue with that "single crochet of the double crochet" was the word "last" - the way I interpreted it was to do a second front-post DC in the same SC from Rd 2 as you had just used. That way they would come to a point almost and be anchored in the same spot if that makes sense. Anyway your frustration was so understandable! It's fun to watch and think along with you of how I would read the pattern. Nice work!
I will be 77 this month. I lived through these patterns and got frustrated with them too. In fact had a crochet belt with cords my mother made for me. For once I guessed right. It was an entertaining video. Great fun😊Keep it up. You are doing great.
I am really enjoying this series! I can't tell you how many times even with pictures i felt like my project was a mystery. I mean sometimes i seriously doubted i would be able to make what was in the picture by following the instructions. Even though I've been crocheting for 50 years (what?!?!) it still happens 😅
OMG! You had me in stitches in this one. Pun intended. 🤣I had never heard you so flustered. It's okay, I would have done the same thing. I enjoyed watching this project very much.
I love the channel, as my sister was born in 1967 this might become her birthday present. As for the haters, ignore them, they just need to make others feel as miserable as they are. I like your colourful nails, at least they're clean and well groomed...
Something came up & i missed the first half hour!😢. So, bye for now - will be back later to watch the entire video. I'm intrigued!!! Many hours later.....so glad I didn't skip the fun beginning! I used to assume I was too stupid to understand those wordy patterns and tossed them. How liberating when I decided maybe there were misprints or incorrect terms or maybe the patterns weren't written out correctly! BOTTOM LINE - I started looking at those situations the way I look at recipes...as suggestions, not written in stone. Nice to figure out a do-around that works! I think that's part of being a crafter! I can't seem to crochet without a post-it to note rows as I go! One of your subscribers wondered if anyone wore this belt as a tube top - I sure would have! Thanks again for another enjoyable tutorial! Looking forward to the next one!
I think that belt in avocado green would look great with Millie's dress. Of course, it isn't like we knew what it would be. I love this channel. I have a BA in history and it feels like this channel is keeping a little bit of that history alive.
I love your enthusiasm even when you get wrong that's the way you learn. keep it up. Oh by the way I'd guested that it was a belt but that's because I was around at that time and i have been crocheting for at least 54 years. 🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧
Try putting the belt with the tie at the back. You'll be able to see the pattern better. Thank you for all you do. I'm one of those who watch and say read it again. I'm so glad when you realise what you're supposed to do. Keep up the good work. X
Congratulations on 20k subs! I remember that the 60s and 70s crochet patterns were wordy, so wordy. Probably why I did a lot of granny squares. Lol 😂 I crocheted a baby ensemble (hat, booties, blanket and cardigan) without a pattern when I was pregnant with my firstborn. It was very nice, I think, but my son grew so fast that he outgrew the cardigan. Lol 😂 Usually a newborn’s weight goes down a little the first week after being born, but my son *gained 3 lbs.* By six months he looked like the Michelin tire guy, chubby rolls upon chubby rolls. 😂 But yes, it was very difficult finding a crochet pattern that made immediate sense. By the 80s it got so much better, no more over explaining!
If you look at the last front post double crochet you made, the pattern had you do a long double into a single stitch two rows down. That’s where it wants you to make the next long double. It’s not well written but there is some continuity in the design.
31:00 "make another long dc in the same sc as last long dc made" => you made the last long in one stitch of the 2nd row (sc), so choose the same stitch to make another long dc to make it even. Well, you made it good enough.
Well I just love everything about your work and darling personality! I'd also like to say I'm a retired nail tech who believes natural nails are the best...thank you for sharing your passion. ❤
60s patterns were very step by step. Trust the process and just follow each step. That annoying second front post needed to go into the same little sc post a couple of rows down that you had just used for the front post you had just done, so that they sun rayed out from the same place.
Another great video in the series. I love that you do such an extensive range of eras. How fun is that belt. It takes me back to my childhood and the Mod Squad of the 70's.
That’s was a lot of fun. You did a wonderful job and the belt came out perfect. So groovy. Congratulations on your success and I’m glad to be here for it. 🫶🏼
Oooh I would love to see what the two belts layered together would look like.. also you have really pretty nails and hands which I think makes crochet videos nicer to watch 🤷🏼♀️ what an odd thing for someone to complain about, having a nice manicure 🤭
Don’t worry about the haters. Personally, I love your nails, I think they always look perfectly manicured and the colours are lovely. As a continental person, I totally associate with the “hand talking”. I guess we’re just very expressive people… 🤣❣️🌹
To make those end stitches make sense... The long DC needed to be worked into the sc from the second round that you worked the previous long DC into. You kept skipping over the word Last. Very easy to miss when frustrated. I feel for you in this moment.
I love these vintage mystery videos and at least 20,000 others agree. I applaud your ability to stick with a pattern to the end. I would've given up on this wordy pattern. I'm excited for the next video.

Don't listen to any of those mean comments! People can be mean for absolutely no reason at all. Just found your channel about a week ago and love the mystery! Thank you!!!
I’ve been binge watching these and this one makes a lot of sense to me as an autistic person, I get the struggle not understanding what it says but being wordy like this would’ve help me a lot with reading certain projects I’ve done. The way it was written makes me think the person struggled too and made sure the instructions was clear incase others related
This was great; and thank you, for not editing out your frustration. Too many edit it out and don't comment on how something got to them, making a viewer like myself who is feeling frustrated with something, feel isolated. I also agree, that pattern was a bit too wordy to the point of confusion. I think they wanted you to put 2 singles in one stitch, then 2 singles again in the next, creating the 4 single group, but they went about it in a round-about way. Though, I do understand the dilemma of trying to explain something and not being able to find the right words or a simpler way.
Your better than me I gave up lol kept curling spent a whole day trying lol congrats on your achievements update: ok now I got the paid pattern yay mill stone for me how did you not curl lol the belt mine is spiral ugggg..❤❤ yours is hove and flat.

Glad you were able to get the project done. It looked like it was touch and go for awhile. Your nails are beautiful and if they don't like what you do, they don't have to watch you ...
What a very cool belt. Both my daughters and older granddaughters would love this. Having you decipher the pattern makes it a lot easier to make. I think a few of these will be in Christmas boxes this year. I know, only just Many with th C-word, but I have a large family and some very special friends I love making a personal gifts for. Congratulations on reaching over twenty thousand subscribers. No one has the right to comment on anything personal. You can almost guarantee they wouldn't say it to your face! I'm a hand talker, as well. 😂 Happy May. xxJane
Could be scaled-down to a headband....and you could work up the sides and make a hand bag.. and sheepishly have to say I skip to the end to see what you have, must confess I do that with books too, can't stand the suspense 😢😅😮 I try and go back and watch in full when I'm knitting or crocheting a mindless pattern that I need company, so I love your hands and your voice🎉❤😂...you're the best!!!
I loved when you shook the pattern! Can’t believe you lasted that long. I wouldn’t have. I’d have been running down the street, tearing at my hair., cursing, screaming and crying, all while wishing horrible things on crochet pattern writers. Put patience and perseverance on your resume darlin. You’ve got them in oodles! Love you and this channel.

The way it was written makes me think the person struggled too and made sure the instructions was clear incase others related
I am enjoying all your videos very much especially the mystery patterns. Thank you.
So stinking cute!!!
I have been enjoying these videos so much!!! Your mystery crochets are fantastic!
thank you :)
I don’t really read patterns. Just watching your videos has really given me a better understanding of pattern reading.
awesome! :)
Very cool! Don't remember anything like this being around in junior high school!
Corrina cute belt in today's video. Thank You for your time and by the way your nails look very nice ❤

This belt would have to have a lot more stitches to fit me! Hahaha X 🤣😂
Thank you so much! 🤗
I sure hope you had a glass of wine after all this was over. Hilarious. And you are so patient, whether you know it or not. Thank you for doing this.
hahaha, oh, indeed :)
Congratulations! I enjoy your channel so much! I graduated in 1965 so I was excited about the pattern. In fact I guessed belt almost immediately. I'm a 60's gal! 😂
Thank you :)
Oh yes another mystery, I just love mysteries!
You have lovely nails! This one was fun for me because I was born in 1967!
Oh cool, and thank you so much! 🤗
💛 whatever others think of me is none of my business
This one kept me on the edge of my seat, and the reveal was SOOOO worth it!
yay! awesome :)
Glad you were able to get the project done. It looked like it was touch and go for awhile. Your nails are beautiful and if they don't like what you do, they don't have to watch you ...
Well said! and thank you :)
Happy May. xxJane
Oh! wonderful :)
Love your channel so much. I love the mystery and also all of your teachings. Thanks so much.
Great ideas 🤗
And thank you 😁
@@justvintagecrochet you're welcome
I loved when you shook the pattern! Can’t believe you lasted that long. I wouldn’t have. I’d have been running down the street, tearing at my hair., cursing, screaming and crying, all while wishing horrible things on crochet pattern writers. Put patience and perseverance on your resume darlin. You’ve got them in oodles! Love you and this channel.
Oh, thank you so much for that :)
.
I just love all your videos!! I love the mystery! Keep em coming!
Congratulations on growing your channel! I have been enjoying the history mystery series very much and appreciate the time and effort you put into every video. Seeing a new video from you brightens my day and brings a smile to my face as I know the next adventure is about to begin :)
And I love your nails 💖
Oh, thank you so much for that! 🤗
👏👏❤ I think your nails are beautiful 😍 i get mesmerised by them by them and have to go back to watch what stitch you just did 🤣, besides I love guessing what colour you might wear next. I adore how expressive you are with your hands besides I think the nasty buggers are just jealous. Keep being you that’s why I subscribed 💐
Oh, thank you so much for that :)
Congrats on 20K subscribers. This was fascinating. I would ignore any bad comments. There are sour grapes everywhere.
I wish I’d had that pattern in ‘67. I’d definitely wear that!
oh, I know right! :)
Corrina, I cannot tell you how many times I’ve been part way through a pattern and it got so confusing (maybe too wordy…lol) and I have given up and gone on to something else. I appreciate how you continue on and don’t give up. Thank you for these videos. On a different note, I think your nails always look lovely.
You're welcome, and thank you so much :)
Watching you is addictive❤😅
I think this would look nice worn with the tie in the back as well. Love this series!
awesome, thank you :)
Cute project! It looks adorable on the Juliet dress, too. And I like how the size is flexible because it can tie closer or further apart.
Wait ... someone say Juliet dress?? Now I'm triply extra interested 😂❤
Very cute! I love these videos and admire your ability to stick to things even when they are confusing. Also, I hope you make one for yourself and show it to us if you have time. I think brown would make a really nice vintage-looking but versatile belt. (Random thought: I wonder if anyone ever wore it as a tube top.)
Thank you so much!
Congratulations on the 20,000! You've created a really unique and special channel here. Such fun to watch and I've learnt so much. Thank you heaps!
thank you :)
I'm learning also, it's wonderful isn't it? 😊
