Probably because it makes no sense to an actual economist, she dropped out of economics and it shows. Econ is supposed to be broad-scale (especially what they teach at uni), what she says is "what mainstream economists think" is way too basic and/or just wrong, unpaid work isn't some overlooked part of the economy, it is the same as paid work just not paid with money etc.. She just doesn't know what she's talking about because the dropped out, if she didn't she'd realise that we talk about these exact things in most econ courses at most universities. All good though no one's perfect

I am a kid and I am watching this!I absolutely love it! We should start thinking about a solution for the problems we created. Change the way you think! We are in the twenty first century, stop thinking like you were living one hundred years ago. What are you giving importance to? What are you spending your money on? What are you supporting? This are questions we should be asking ourselves on a daily life!
NO YOU SHOULD NOT. you should be able to focus on school, on your friends and on life and not what type of milk you drink. society should ensure that there is a system in place that doesn't overstep and that we have institutions that support such a system. it shouldn't be possible to choose harmful products because they shouldn't be available. the problem arises not at the consumption but at the production level.

Its 2021 and global economies need to embrace circularity asap if we are to reverse the current planetary and environmental crisis we are in now.

This is the kind of thinking we need to save the world. We are not going to be populating other planets - this one is perfect for us. The idea of greed has only been around for a few millenia perhaps and out of control greed since the last century. Up to a few thousand years ago, humans cared for each other in total, as societies and that is the kind of social programming which is needed for us to survive as a species and for our planet to survive as well. We have to be thinking of economics and the planet in this (or a similar) way. Kate Raworth is a great thinker.

Kate - Excellent - thank you so much. I agree with everything you have said. Your 'higher ambition' needs a new type of leadership and leader. The traditional highly objective/money driven/military style of leadership is increasingly damaging the planet and everyone on it. What we need to do is move to a new paradigm of leadership which rewards everyone rather than those just at the top of the tree. I have advocated Transpersonal Leadership for many years now for the reasons you give, but the 'elite' don't want it as it doesn't fit in with their desires from egotism and greed. I have a contact with one of the world's leading experts on Transpersonal leadership - if you send me a reply I'll pass on their details.

We must then allocate private control over any portion of the Commons by competitive bidding under a leasehold arrangement rather than the issuance of deeds suggesting any individual or entity is an "owner" of the Commons. The annual payment -- a rental payment -- would go into the common fund out of which we pay for democratically-agreed upon public goods and services. This systemic change has been called for by thoughtful people for centuries. Read anything by the 19th century political economist Henry George for clear insight into why this is so necessary and how it would work to change the course of history.

The utopian economists have dreamed of terrestrial paradises which failed to come true. Good luck with ‘Doughnut Economics’ and rewriting economics.

I can understand her effort of encouraging people to think the whole picture. While in 1840, when Queen Victora decided to have a war to protect the benefit of opium business in China, they didn't care about the health condition of Chinese and only focused on the profit of opium. The book "Inglorious Empire" by Indian former Minister also mentioned the British destroyed the industry foundation of India and produced opium there. My point is, "Doughnut Economics" cares about the environment more than the GDP now. It's a new rule to play the economic game. While with the help of history, maybe we can learn about that some tragedy of countries just because they didn't have the strong economic and lost the freedom of development? Could the new theory become the weapon to keep the developing countries poor? Because if they want to develop their economy in a western way: damaging the environment, they have to pay the tax for the developed countries in the future? Limited by the technology, the developing countries have to choose between low-speed-development and damage-environment-development. If they have to buy the high-tech from the developed countries or pay the bill of damaging the environment. It could be another robbing of 21 century with the perfect theory.

I've never understood why we need endless economic growth, which is obviously not sustainable. The dependence on such growth is also why pensions are basically a ponzi scheme, which has started to break down due to falling birthrates in developed countries.
I have her book and 2 others which help a lot to understand where we are are what we have to do. Ha Joon Chang's "Economics. The Users' Guide" and Yanis Varoufakis' "Talking to My Daughter About the Economy" Both are as readable as a good novel and both are so very useful. Kate's book is with them.
Please, have a look at "Creating an Economy for the Common Good" by Christian Felber, he directed me here through a tweet. Time to join forces, MUCH can be done and much is BEING done!
Not all economics fit the description painted here. The number who do not is small, admittedly, but they have provided a remarkably insightful analysis of how the world really works. Who is on this list? Read Mason Gaffney's "After the Crash" or Fred Harrison's "The Predator Culture" and other books.
I don't think anyone would be against a more environmentally friendly economy. It is just the large cost that comes with it, these oils companies have been aware for decades about the global impact fossil fuels have on the environment. They haven't done anything about it because they are greedy and they don't care because the general population hasn't called them out for it either.

Unfortunately, there are too many people that will exploit the well intentioned efforts. It sucks that we cannot understand how we can ALL move forward together.
Raworth takes the Labour-Capital model of neo-classical economics as her starting point. A much better starting point is the Land-Labour-Capital model of classical economics. With this model you quickly arrive at a very simple answer - Henry George's Singe Tax, a single reform that would fix just about everything.
Is there actually a mathematical model for this Doughnut Economy that can be used to analyze the present state of our economy vs the ideal state we seek to reach?
And that’s one of the problems...is getting stuck on having to have a mathematical model for everything. Maybe step back and consider other solutions too. A mathematical model is often very subpar for more complex solutions.
Convincing. A bit ranty .... but she's not wrong. Yet here we are, 7 years later. Some policy change in offing (e.g. EVs), but rather more economic BAU plus enormous chickens coming home to roost. The conventional route for change is that the hearts and minds alert pollsters, this leads to focus groups, then crafting of policies, then votes. Better hope the hearts and minds keep changing.

I got here after 10 years. How cute were those people a decade ago that believed in a balanced society without mentioning that billionaires should be held accountable.
This should be taught on schools. Why is it possible we are still only learning about the 'old' outdated economic thoughts?
Unfortunately, there are too many people that will exploit the well intentioned efforts. It sucks that we cannot understand how we can ALL move forward together.
I know. On the other hand, those who "exploit" these efforts can serve as the thriving force not to rest to soon ;)

Raworth takes the Labour-Capital model of neo-classical economics as her starting point. A much better starting point is the Land-Labour-Capital model of classical economics. With this model you quickly arrive at a very simple answer - Henry George's Singe Tax, a single reform that would fix just about everything.

Is there actually a mathematical model for this Doughnut Economy that can be used to analyze the present state of our economy vs the ideal state we seek to reach?
Could the internet of things enable us to model and regulate the Doughnut Economy in real-time in order to achieve balance?
Havent read it yet but worth checking out her book for in depth analysis of her theories
And that’s one of the problems...is getting stuck on having to have a mathematical model for everything. Maybe step back and consider other solutions too. A mathematical model is often very subpar for more complex solutions.

Yet here we are, 7 years later. Some policy change in offing (e.g. EVs), but rather more economic BAU plus enormous chickens coming home to roost.
The conventional route for change is that the hearts and minds alert pollsters, this leads to focus groups, then crafting of policies, then votes. Better hope the hearts and minds keep changing.
