I’m enjoying it so far. Sure, when compared to juggernauts like Resident Evil and Dead Space it doesn’t come near those experiences, but it’s also not entirely that type of game either. Was surprised to see other reviewers going so hard on it. While it has some jank (lets be real this doesn’t have a RE or EA Deadspace budget on top of it) I thought the visuals were great. The world is highly detailed and the ambience of the setting soaks each scene as well as the music. It actually had more combat than I was expecting, and especially with PS5 haptics guns feel and sound punchy. It plays out as almost a film noire detective mystery first, and a horror title second. Although it does have a few jump scares, they never felt cheap. Although it won’t be praised as a modern masterpiece, I got out of it what I expected from what was promised on the tin. Being different from other recent survival horror entries and remakes was actually a positive for me, and more survival horror is always welcome. Would love to see this series continue as I think it can carve out it’s own space here as a narrative, almost campy at times, detective noire horror. My only hope is that other reviewers have not scared people off from an experience they otherwise would likely enjoy if they are even remotely into the survival horror or horror genre in general. And given the legacy of the IP, this is a solid pickup. I do think it’s release in a week this insanely crowded will hurt it even more though, but hopefully people give this one a shot in the near future. I went in with low expectations and came out pleasantly surprised. I think this review is spot on and the ‘Recommend’ but not ‘strongly’ rating is accurate. Well done as always and appreciate you giving this one a fair shot and not just chasing the popular opinion.
May be worth reading this if you're on the fence about buying this. Firstly, die hard survival horror game fan, I'll 100% this game, got it digitally and got the collector's edition on top of that. This isn't out of hate. However, a few technical issues is a massive understatement as of the release week. In it's current state, on PS5 (2 different ones) it has several issues with stuttering, the audio is absolutely botched in several areas cutting out entire cutscenes and character audio as well as enemy audio and combat. Aside from audio, HUD disappears periodically which means you're unable to see your health, ammo, pickups and collectibles. Laslty, be mindful of running or dodging into certain objects or enviroments, as you can and will get stuck. Now, I don't regret buying the game, I enjoy it just fine and like the story, but these bugs can and will cause you to miss certain areas and restarting the game, restoring licenses or uninstalling and reinstalling the game doesn't fix this (aside from being stuck in environmemts or props). Normally you just have to deal with the issue until another cutscene or it decides to just fix itself. Hopefully a patch comes sooner rather than later, as it really doesn't make for an enjoyable first impression and I can see it completely turning off several players.
I feel like this would've been better as a retro, stylized homage to the original taking inspiration from recent indie survival horror games like Signalis, and used the old graphics to lean into uncanny horror
Such a measured review that's hits on things that matters. This one i don't think will be for me right now but I'd definitely consider it later At a reduced price. Coming from a res evil fan
Great review, Austin -- If you had a good time with this game and it got you looking more into survival-horror as a genre, I would hugely recommend "SIGNALIS" from the studio rose-engine. Definitely an homage to RE and Silent Hill in many ways, but also very much its own thing. Not big on jump scares, but dripping with atmosphere and unique personality. Can't recommend enough if you enjoyed "Alone in the Dark." Cheers!
@@josephjoy2245 no problem man. Was just saying. Yeah it doesn't seem to be type of game tbh. I wasn't impressed by the demo and reviews haven't been great.
Good review... but... why in holy heck would you give away the times / locations in-game when you encounter monsters!?!?!! Your review gave away the most important aspect of minute-to-minute gameplay in a horror survival game!!! Always thoughtful... how could you miss this?!
Never take a loan in the dark, always read the contract. Thanks for mentionning the framedrops and freezes, I've seen two reviews already which completely ignored this, even if it was clear in the footage that the game was running poorly ( but it could just be a capture problem ). I hate when a game freezes to load stuff every 10 meters, completely ruins the experience, I hope they fix this.
Constructive observation just for better info: when listing PC specs on screen to discuss performance, highly recommend you list it as RTX 3060 mobie GPU. The desktop GPUs and the Laptop versions have pretty significant performance differences despite the shared name (Nvidia's fault for misleading consumers so I dont blame anyone for being confused). Laptop versions are always running at lower TDP since power draw is limiting in that form factor, plugged or unplugged

Congratulations millionaire. The sky is the limit. Follow your passion. 10 million will be here before you know it.❤
May be worth reading this if you're on the fence about buying this.
The cover art for this game makes it look like it's Winona Ryder and David Harbour.
This review told me what I'd hoped. Baby's first survival horror works for me as I'm a big chicken.
Skill up is putting Austin in Crunch Mode
I never understood the obsession with puzzles. If you want puzzles then go buy one. Why on earth would you want it in a video game
Man, the reviews for this game are all over the place.
now if only rockstar would remake there amazing noir game in current gen everything omfgggg it would be so butey
Great review as always, prolly give this a shot somewhere down the line as too many other games coming out that take precedence.
I’m pretty sold on this as a vibe based game with great performances. It certainly seems like it’s worth a wait for a discount
I'm amazed that a total Chad like Austin is afraid of anything
I feel like this would've been better as a retro, stylized homage to the original taking inspiration from recent indie survival horror games like Signalis, and used the old graphics to lean into uncanny horror
Such a measured review that's hits on things that matters. This one i don't think will be for me right now but I'd definitely consider it later At a reduced price. Coming from a res evil fan
Played the original back in 1993, as a 14 year old I’ve had my fright induced sleepless nights 😮
Been having a great time with the game so far. Just picked up the shotgun and ready to play more.. 🔥
I'll wait for sale (and for TIME) but you've got me interested. I really like the Noir nature of the game
Y’all need to keep doing metrics on 2080tis. Some of us still saving for our 4080tis
I'll absolutely buy this game when it goes on sale in a few months.
This looks like a game ideal for those who loved Resident Evil (Gamecube) and Silent Hill 2 (PS2).
My problem is the outrageous price. This should be a 40 dollar game.
$40 on Amazon now physically
@@josephjoy2245 I hate game discs lmao. But thanks for the info.
@@casthedemon ah, I didn’t know brother…Just saw it on sale somewhere 😆 Probably go cheaper than that soon tho
Always thoughtful... how could you miss this?!
a survival horror game that's "not that scary", I'm sold
Never take a loan in the dark, always read the contract.
Thanks for mentionning the framedrops and freezes, I've seen two reviews already which completely ignored this, even if it was clear in the footage that the game was running poorly ( but it could just be a capture problem ).
I hate when a game freezes to load stuff every 10 meters, completely ruins the experience, I hope they fix this.
I absolutely loved the original. It was like nothing I'd ever played. May have to check this out.
More of an adventure game than a survival horror or action horror title. At that, I think it's an excellent adventure game.
I don't know when I'll get to this game, but I will, goddamnit!
The "AUSTIN IS THE MAIN REVIEWER" jokes are so old 🙄
