Agreed. Infested with ads is how I'd describe it. And "advertiser friendly videos" is a chilling sentence. Ads are dictating content instead of ads supporting content.
It’s really on the creators. Creators can accept a default number and placement of midroll ads which is the lazy way. Or creators can select 0,1,2 or “n” midroll ads and place them at logical breaks in the content. The former is garbage. The latter is fine.
@J Fz Disagree. Ad block steals money from the creators. Yes, it also denies Google it’s money, but too much collateral damage. Either pay the creator directly or pay through Google ads. But don’t steal.
I love UA-cam Premium - I watch over 35 hours a week and it’s valuable not having adverts EVER! I watch on my tv and even the homepage is cleaner without ads on it!! I also like the music service too (although it’s FAR from perfect)

I subscribed to YT Premium last week because of your other video about your subscriptions. I did this very much to support every channel I watch in some way. I can not be a patreon of all the channels I regularly watch. I wished my Premium money would go more directly to all the creators I watch, but it's better than nothing.

@B P I find this take on UA-cam Premium strange. Everything can''t be free. UA-cam has ads to pay the creators and to make money themselves. It costs to host these videos, put them out there for use to watch, etc. How else can they do it? They place ads on the videos. In Premium they give you the option to pay a fee upfront and then you see the videos ad free. Now if a person thinks it is too expensive and they chose to watch the ads that is their right. When you're on the free side, the system keeps you locked in with suggestions to keep your interest (so they can play more ads). Once you go premium, it suddenly can't find anything interesting anymore. Why would this happen? Because the longer you watch once you subscribe, the less money the platform makes from you. Thanks for this comment - I'm still on fence about subscribing to Premium, but if I do subscribe, it will be interesting to see how suggestions change for me.
"Because the longer you watch once you subscribe, the less money the platform makes from you" I did not understand this part. Once a premium subscriber has paid their monthly payment, this should be it. UA-cam has now made their money. There monetary income (from youtube premium) should not fluctuate after that regardless of how much or how little hours the premium subscriber watches youtube. At least this is my conclusion. @nitishkumarjurel241 the changes that I noticed were temporary, and might no longer take place. That was a while back, and I'm happy with the service. What I was trying to say was that the more you watch, the less money they will make per unit of watch time. At this point, I have the youtube app running about 60 hours a week, mostly listening while I work or sleep. My premium stays the same, of course, but they are making less for every extra hour. It's true that I was initially very upset about the sudden apparent change in what the algorithm was suggesting, but I can't imagine watching UA-cam without Premium now. I'm very happy with the service, and have been subscribed this entire time. One could get essentially the same result with an ad blocker, but I fully believe that creators deserve to get paid for their efforts, especially if I have the means and won't even notice the draw on my bank account. I'm paying for several other services that I rarely use, but all of them combined are far less than I used to pay for a cable TV subscription. If I ever have to cut down my expenses due to hardship, YT premium would be the very last one to go
I joined Premium when that whole 2 ads thing started since I do use my phone A LOT to watch UA-cam. I was checking my revenue while you were talking and and 1.5% of my revenue is from Premium. You are very welcome, I live to give when I can
I've been using the student promotion for the last year or so, but I do wish there were just a no-ad type subscription. I don't really like using the music service or background downloads. Edit: As a side: do creators still get compensated from Premium viewers with a paused watch history?
I don't mind the ads if they're a reasonable length, but lately I'm getting ads that last from 4 or 5 minutes to 90+ minutes! I don't know how it affects the creators when I skip those ridiculous ads, but I'm not sitting through hours of ads for a youtube video.
One thing I don’t get is why Google doesn’t bundle YT Premium with YT TV the way they do with Music. In fact, they should bundle everything (all the YT stuff, storage, and Stadia) with a discount. Seems like it would give them better lock in. As it is I start and stop YT TV based on football season.
I'm sorry but UA-cam Premium is quite frankly a rip off at its current pricing. Google aren't paying for the production of licensing or content unlike other video streamers so forcing users who want ad free viewing to take a music package they possibly don't want because 1, they're probably quite happy with their usual steaming service or 2, don't listen to music streaming is quite frankly ridiculous! If there was a no add basic service for $4 or $5 I'd be on that like a bear on honey but as the advertisements are frankly getting stupid I'll continue using an ad free app till Google see sense or find a way to block in which case I still won't pay a stupid amount. I really feel for content creator's like yourself over this but this battle isn't with you, it's with your overlords!
well said. TV advertising pays for TV channels to pay for content made by studios. The content on UA-cam is free at the point of delivery. Google is being plain greedy. If the sub was $3-$5 a month, its a no-brainer and everyone will do it. To pay NOT to get advertised to on content that is made freely and no one can see that as a bad thing. Holy shit have we lost our way.
I signed up for Premium last Fall for the trial period to get rid of political ads (from both sides) since the trial lasted just beyond the election. For a lot of the reasons you've outlined I've kept it. Getting rid of ads (and particularly political ads) is a huge plus. I haven't had cable for years but I do watch a lot of UA-cam so it has been a plus. I do think they're pushing the value envelope on pricing.
thank you so much for the info. This just convinced me to get youtube premium. I watch a lot of videoessays from creators, and I love to watch those while I work. I always wanted to support them from the video itself, but I didn't know how. Now I know. Thank you!!
Try NewPipe. It's a FOSS app for using UA-cam, Soundcloud, and other services. The UA-cam part of it allows downloads and screen-off playback (for listening to music, podcasts, or anything) for free. Zero ads.
I used this before they changed the name and I love it. Lon gets paid and I see no ads! I watch others as well with out ads. $11.99 with while. I DO think UA-cam only keeps a year's worth of charges because that is all I see and I know ive been using this for longer.
Shelby Church had a few interesting videos approximately a year ago about how UA-cam pays out based on how many commercials are watched and also the type of commercials that get assigned to the video.
Another part of the equation, I'm guessing, is that the number of UA-cam channels is also probably increasing. I've been a premium subscriber for several years and it's great for me as I watch more UA-cam than anything else and often watch through the app on the TV. I also think that the included UA-cam Music is actually better than Spotify or others as there is a ton of music on UA-cam which is not on those other services. Smaller artists, old TV shows, etc... I tend to listen to more of that than regular studio release "albums". I'm glad to hear it works OK for the channels too. I have other video streaming subs like Netflix and Hulu. I have thought of getting rid of those from time to time at least for a while. It's never even crossed my mind to cancel my UA-cam Premium subscription though. One last point about the free-with-ads movies on UA-cam. I think a lot of those are the edits that were done for TV playback or censored in any event. So... meh.
Not to mention with UA-cam Premium, they have a "Free with ads" selection of movies, with UA-cam Premium those ads also go away. Do they usually have the best movies? No. But there's usually something decent. Last month they had about 17 James Bond movies so that was a nice little perk
There is no way I could go back to living without YT Premium. My kids would revolt anyway. Lon is a DS9 fan? Not surprised. It is a fantastic documentary about one of my favorite shows.
If you download videos, how long are they good for in your own storage? Is there a time limit? I'm not super tech savvy but I do a lot of dancing/exercise videos for classes and the adds are a real pain. Any help is appreciated.
I’ve been with premium since 16’. Hate ads but now noticing creators are doing their own sponsorship ads. Smh. I had a nice ad free run for 5yrs. Wonder how YT is going to combat that… Thx for the vid.
I have the family plan and it was massively appreciated how things like the TV UA-cam now became a lot more watchable without ads. Blocking ads on computers is easy but not so much on TV's. I would happily pay more if we could also remove the sponsored content inside videos that you cant block. Right now I've learned to skip which is easy on computer but on TV its much harder and you get network buffering often when trying to micro skip. Its frustrating. We wouldn't accept this on Netflix and I pay less for that. Premium should be pushed a lot harder to get more people into it and raise the tide on all creators getting properly funded so they can easily make a living on UA-cam and dedicate themselves to it.
I watch so much You Tube I've been Premium for about 3 years now. I love the audio still playing while minimized on my phone (this should not be a Premium feature though)
My You Tube Premium membership works only with my iPhone! It does not work with my MacBook Air. What I need to do to fix/or access the right of using it in both, my iPhone and my MacBook Air?
I was considering signing up to UA-cam premium, but with every service now looking for premium membership at similar monthly rates, it's not feasible. I'm also really convinced that those sh!tty game ads are being "encouraged" by UA-cam as a means of blackmailing viewers into signing up to premium... much like their consistent interruptions on UA-cam music. As it is, I prefer to modestly support a couple of creators, like Lon, directly.
Thanks for this video. I have one question-- as a creator if I subscribed to youtube premium, will my you tube channel get benefited in terms of views, user engagement or more better recommendation to more larger audience from you tube etc?
Is it true when you have youtube premium youtube only takes 30% of your superchat ? When people superchat you instead of taking 50% without bein a youtube premium member?
Sorry, I cannot support the same platform with my wallet while they constantly threaten creator's livelihoods with ever-shifting goalposts and the occasional AI 'whoopsie'. Not to mention making it harder for new creators to get to a monetized status this past year. This 17min infomercial for Susan could have been used to inform people of alternative platforms you should be posting your videos to, if for nothing else as an additional on-line backup of your library. But I'll continue to support in other ways.
I had Premium for 4 months for free on a tablet promotion and liked the lack of ads on any device and downloads (watchin on a browser with blocker not practical and hurts the creators...) However, the price for people like me with zero interest on UA-cam music (Tidal Lossless for me, spotify for most) and their original content is ridiculous, they need a reasonable non-ads only subscription, otherwise it's just too much and impossible to justify.
The main reason I went to Premium was to watch YT Originals, but now I find they have run out (I watched around 7 series) and not being updated by new productions or subsequent series. Being from the UK and only having Apple platforms, it’s expensive $20pm and desirable Premium only content is declining.
Hi, I signed up for UA-cam premium as a creator 2 days ago. Now, my revenue no longer updates as usual. Do you have any idea how this works? I don't know my revenue for 28th January when it should be updated by now.
Do you think UA-cam is throttling non-premium members? For the last month or so I can't hold a 1080p60 stream steady, stops a few times then drops down to 720p and runs fine. I've completely given up on 1440p or 4k even though I'm watching on a 4k60 monitor :( I know with Covid tons of people are spending lots of time on youtube but sure feels like throttling, not bandwidth limits. I have a gigabit internet connection, fast.com speedtest is 870mbps down, speedtest.net 960mbps down. Getting pretty frustrated.
Question, I have you tube premium if I download videos to my iPad then who even made those videos erase them on their end would the videos erase on my iPad ?? Thanks
@@LonSeidman Thank you , by any chance do you know how to download videos from UA-cam and save them on my iPad or Mac or laptop windows and keep them save them for ever? I don’t want to loose them if who ever made the UA-cam video erases them ..
Been a YT Premium user for a long time and have around 200 channel that I subscribe to. Not all publish all the time so it's not too much. However I have had at least one channel complain to their viewers about people using ad blockers and they lumped Premium users in with that because anyone not seeing the ads was basically ripping off that creator. He was quite angry about it and wanted the ad blocker users and Premium to just go away. So I left. It's not my fault he doesn't make as much rev off Premium users. I don't pay for this every month for him. I pay for it for me. And I don't make the rules. At the same time, there are plenty of creators who make videos to create and not necessarily to make money. And then there are those who just want revenue and anything not bringing in cash is wasting their time. That's fine. But I think they need to remember there are millions of channels out here and being a butthead creator is not a good way to stand out of the crowd.
I love my premium and ain’t gonna get rid of it. The final push for going premium was when I was watching a family vlog where they lost there baby. The ad was of a product for a baby with a happy smiling mom and dad with baby in it. The video was about a baby that died at birth and the ad was for a living happy baby. That was so inappropriate.
Still has in video ads so what's the point of paying for premium side by a current premium paying person who is deciding if he's going to pay again in video ads should be banned make your money some other way
It would be nice if they would improve the video quality if you subscribed. I feel like they really strip out quality of the videos that producers post.
Please could you let me know if, I went for the one month trial period of youtube premium, could I download all my favourite UA-cam videos, and then when my trial is over will I still be able to keep these or will they get deleted?
They have 10 second if you double tap. If you want 20 or 30 etc then after your initial double tap just keep tapping for 10 second intervals. So if you want say 30 seconds ff just tripple tap.
Thank you for the info! Being able to download a video is nice. Also sounds nice from the creator standpoint. I am always listening or watching a youtube video. I also like understanding compensation for channels I have started recently (once able to be monetized).
UA-cam premium is the last I will cancel bcz of youtube music and the ability to download videos I changed my carrier to Mint mobile paying way less than before
I'd go back to premium IF they created a feature I've always wished for. I save a lot of videos to rewatch but so many times it gets deleted or made private and it doesn't say what was deleted. I don't get it but ok. Here's what I propose youtube does to fix that. When we save a video, there should be a box where we can type the title what video we saved. Then if it gets deleted we know what to replace. That would make it worth it to me.
Does youtube (not youtube premium) play in the background with the newer Samsung devices? because i know there is a background feature in Samsung UI/Android
I had UA-cam Red but they kept billing me at very different times each month and "couldn't" notify me when they charged my account. Now it's just too expensive, especially with Comcast charging me another $30/month for "unlimited" soon. Speaking of UA-cam's top-secret Demonetizing & Deleting criteria… Do you have thoughts on recent calls to force social media platforms to both publish _and strictly follow_ their own content-moderation and editorial guidelines? That sounds like a good thing to me, and definitely better than eliminating "Safe Harbor" protections. Heck, anything is better than having corporations capriciously apply unknown standards without any transparency or available recourse. (Obviously the attack on the Capitol and the fallout has turned up the heat on this topic again, and some of the ideas being kicked around are pretty awful.) Hmm... That could make a decent roundtable discussion for you and other content creators to host. Anyway, thanks for another great WWU.
Hey Lon, I had meant to come by and comment sooner, but forgot. I have UA-cam Premium, and I've had it since it was UA-cam Red, so I also have the $10 price. I was wondering if it's possible to get perks from channels you like by supporting them through premium vs directly? I ask because in my case, my intention for getting Red, now Premium, was the legally and fairly remove ads, but also to support the creators as a whole, who's content I watch without having to pick and chose who to financially support. For example I watch a lot of channels, but it would be hard to financially support them all individually, so my thought was to support them by paying for the Red/ Premium service. I wasn't sure if it was right, or not to ask for perks from a channel for being a premium subscriber as well as those who support them directly. The UA-cam model has changed quite a few times it seems. Maybe I'm asking with a lack of understanding here. It just sounded like from your video, that the creators still get paid a portion from me being a premium member.
I really wish they would provide an affiliate model to incentivize creators to promote the subscription side of the business. I suspect they want don't want to cannibalize the ad side of their revenue model and just leave it out there as a poorly marketed alternative.
@@LonSeidman thank you I appreciate your response. One more question I am trying to move songs (to a new order) that are downloaded within a playlist . Is that possible?
How hard could it be though to directly distribute the 55 % of my subscribtion fee among the views that I have watched. Everytime there's a pool it means that what I consume means less. I most likely don't give that much watchtime and only focus on a few channels. I really think more people would pay for premium and such if they knew the money went directly to the content creator. Heck, I'd gladly pay a double price even if a percentage of that still went to Google.
Good video but you missed a big point your ad money went up when they make it much harder for a channel to get monitored 4000 watch hour and 1000 subs. That cut the monetized videos by a huge amount. It took my channel a year to get to1000subs to get my UA-cam money back.
@@LonSeidman well it was not that there was millions of inappropriate channels removed it was millions of very small channels removed that had fine content.
I feel with the sudden surge of mid roll ads UA-cam/Google implemented they're essentially forcing people towards UA-cam premium. If it had been offered without the pressure I may have been more open to trying it.
I have UA-cam premium. I remember UA-cam Red. I don't think it attracted enough of attention. Now i have to pay 11.99 USD for UA-cam premium. I hope you still can collect from my view time. I usually click on your videos anything Consumer related.
@@LonSeidman can you elaborate on the funding? If a video that you created is 11 minutes long, for ever 60 mins viewwill earn one dollar for every minute that is being viewed .
I explain it in the video - it really varies based on the total amount of dollars in the pool and how many minutes those in the pool watched for. It's not a fixed amount month to month.
Be careful with sharing premium with people outside of your house, they log ip addresses for your "family" account and if they see more than 3 ip address (that's about how much I figured out myself) then they will disable the family account.
That happens even to non-monetized channels like myself & hundreds of other content creators on here-and we do NOT get any of that money. I think my tinky channel brings in a few hundred-to a thousand a month. . There are quite a few free a d bl oc kers. I use 7 to keep them to zero.

I would assume so - Google knows what you watched anyways haha.
If it would play an ad, it should still compensate the video
Now I know. Thank you!!
I had to temporarily cancel my premium membership due to financial changes, i will now have to suffer the ads until my financial situation improves.
Great video for us, users, subscribers and UA-cam Premium members to understand how UA-cam works.
I'm a heavy youtube consumer and I watch everything downloaded and on 1.75 speed. Would that effect your monetization?
Thanks!
No it'll count it based on the 1x playback
Thank you 🙏🏽
That told me everything I needed to know about Premium, thank you 👍
Shelby Church had a few interesting videos approximately a year ago about how UA-cam pays out based on how many commercials are watched and also the type of commercials that get assigned to the video.
So... meh.
You get a little gimme every once in a while too. Google sent me a free Nest Mini a while back for being a Premium subscriber.
Thank you. Prime music just went up again so I'm dumping them and going to start listening to my music on yt
@@rozwynn2349 Hey Roz, be aware you can also get a separate youtube music app for phones/ipad/etc... which is more geared toward just music listening.
Wow thanks for the video really informative definitely worth the money and happy to hear it really helps all the amazing creators I watch
So can you download onto a memory stick to plug into a tv? And if playing on tv, will they play back to back on the tv?
1. No and 2.yes
Hey after a long time i had seen positive and honest presentation of a topic. U a are really optimistic. I really like ur video very much. Subscribing
I watch so much You Tube I've been Premium for about 3 years now. I love the audio still playing while minimized on my phone (this should not be a Premium feature though)
I just don't use the UA-cam app, in the browser adblocking works and background play also works. Plus the app is even worse than browser UA-cam IMO.
@@HazewinDog Modded UA-cam clients:🗿 (I'm also commented from UA-cam Music (which is also modded)
This video really helped me understand how UA-cam Premium works! Thanks alot!
Won’t have any impact
$11 / month for hundreds of hours of high quality content is a better value than any other streaming service.
I've got a question! If someone has been paying for your UA-cam premium benefits, does that mean they'll know if you still have them or not?
No the creators are not able to see which viewer is watching on premium.
I subscribed on my desktop , but is not on my tablets ?
Thanks
yes it syncs up with UA-cam so the video will go away the next time the iPad gets on the network.
@@LonSeidman
Thank you , by any chance do you know how to download videos from UA-cam and save them on my iPad or Mac or laptop windows and keep them save them for ever? I don’t want to loose them if who ever made the UA-cam video erases them ..
Do you have to subscribe to Premium in order to create videos for it?
No ☠️
Been a YT Premium user for a long time and have around 200 channel that I subscribe to.
There are quite a few free a d bl oc kers. I use 7 to keep them to zero
Still has in video ads so what's the point of paying for premium side by a current premium paying person who is deciding if he's going to pay again in video ads should be banned make your money some other way
When i get premium can i watch higher resolution
It would be nice if they would improve the video quality if you subscribed. I feel like they really strip out quality of the videos that producers post.
I can never go back from premium
Please could you let me know if, I went for the one month trial period of youtube premium, could I download all my favourite UA-cam videos, and then when my trial is over will I still be able to keep these or will they get deleted?
What if I have an existing a ccount?
I didnt know about the pooling the money together. Good to know.
I want youtube to add 15 or 30 second rewind and ff options.
They have 10 second if you double tap.
If you want 20 or 30 etc then after your initial double tap just keep tapping for 10 second intervals.
So if you want say 30 seconds ff just tripple tap.
@@MrDAVIDGBJONES thank you! Is this a new feature or has it been like that for a long time?
@@Time.for.tea. Late reply, but I've been doing this on mobile since 2018
Thank you for the info!
Does youtube (not youtube premium) play in the background with the newer Samsung devices? because i know there is a background feature in Samsung UI/Android
you can use the "open in split screen/pop up view" and itll keep playing
by default, no but you can get 3rd party applications (eg. UA-cam ReVanced 🗿)
Do more old school tech please
Paying youtube premium 5 years
They have monetization?
This is an awesome video!!! Thank you!!!
I don't even watch Big UA-camrs, most UA-camrs I watch are small channels like Comic drake, casual comics, Gem mint collectibles.
What is this Garrison Ultra Browser?
Nothing was mentioned about the ability to download music ? I'm still in the dark please help
UA-cam music allows for that through the music app
@@LonSeidman thank you I appreciate your response. One more question I am trying to move songs (to a new order) that are downloaded within a playlist . Is that possible?
I love UA-cam premium!!
Good to know that Premium is so favorable for Creators
On some ads were longer then the video so I have Premium
Good video but you missed a big point your ad money went up when they make it much harder for a channel to get monitored 4000 watch hour and 1000 subs. That cut the monetized videos by a huge amount. It took my channel a year to get to1000subs to get my UA-cam money back.
I mentioned that it was the result of the adpocalypse.
@@LonSeidman well it was not that there was millions of inappropriate channels removed it was millions of very small channels removed that had fine content.
Those were the days when UA-cam was made simply for sharing and no greed.
I have youtube premium for students! Love the discount 💗

Watch now. So with it.
My husband pays $17.99 for Netflix, 8.99 for STARZ, and also has you tube premium. Couldn’t we watch all those movies on you tube?
I feel with the sudden surge of mid roll ads UA-cam/Google implemented they're essentially forcing people towards UA-cam premium. If it had been offered without the pressure I may have been more open to trying it.
If I subscribe and pay the $11.99/month, can I watch movies for free which otherwise costs money?
Yes I’ve been able to watch movies without ads

Thanks! Yes any premium watch minute helps the channel. I appreciate your viewership!
It's not a fixed amount month to month.
sharing the family plan with my friends! $3 a month is not bad at all
Be careful with sharing premium with people outside of your house, they log ip addresses for your "family" account and if they see more than 3 ip address (that's about how much I figured out myself) then they will disable the family account.
I don't like the idea that part of the money is going to some stupid but popular channels.
That happens even to non-monetized channels like myself & hundreds of other content creators on here-and we do NOT get any of that money. I think my tinky channel brings in a few hundred-to a thousand a month. . There are quite a few free a d bl oc kers. I use 7 to keep them to zero.
