When options are bought by retailers or hedge companies, there are Delta neutral companies/institutions that are buying or selling “equivalent delta” So if they are selling you a call for a 80delta call they are theoretically buying 80 underlying real shares to remain unbiased and profitable as “dealers” When the position becomes more evident towards its expiration, you will see dealers unwinding. For instance if that 80 delta call is becoming “more realized” they will continue to buy the difference in 20 shares until the option becomes fully realized at that price, so if they needed to they could easily fulfill their end of the agreement. Likewise if the 80 delta option is becoming unrealized dealers can comfortably “unwind” this position until they sell all 80 shares with an expectation that the stock will not need to be collateralized because no stock will need to be handed off I hope that gives you a basic idea. Gamma data can be very helpful in getting a deeper glance on what is actually likely to happen in the stock market. Generally they can predict expected moves in stock however cannot account for massive black swan events that are without warning like financial crisis, insider selling, or massive unleveraged stock purchases from large hedge funds or holding companies
