    The local sawmill got here in the 60's around 66.It was a Frick and would cut 24 foot stuff. Had a 4-71 GM two valve that was made from 1950 to 52 according to the numbers. Pulled the main saw, edger and a cuttoff off a line shaft. We were still in high school and ran the mill after school till dark-30. We graduated in 69. The grandson still runs it but has a 6-71 on it but still has that 4-71 that needs a bottom end overhaul but still runs. A GM has the ideal governor response to keep the blade at a steady speed opposed to a 4-cycle. It'll do well. God Bless Yall

    • @chrisevans2645
      @chrisevans2645 2 місяці тому +1

      Do you mean turbocharged? All 2 stroke diesels have a blower, which is often repurposed as a supercharger on hotrods. A 2 stroke diesel needs this blower to run since there is no vacuum to pull air into the cylinder. The engine is still considered to be naturally aspirated because the blower is sized and geared to match the displacement of the engine. They did have turbocharged versions as well which would be in addition to the blower.

    • @ChasingPerfection
      @ChasingPerfection 2 місяці тому

      @@chrisevans2645 no, my dad said it was supercharged. Which he's a 40yr GM diesel tech. I'm sure he said it just to say what it was, not as to say it as it was something added on. That wasn't the thing to do back in the mid 80s, at least not on a family owned sawmill. The conversation came up because about a decade ago, some preservation society bought the old sawmill but never did anything with it. They, in the last 9 months or so offered my dad to buy it back and that's when I asked questions about it. I was like 2/3 years old at the time but I remember the bellow of the sawmill. My dad's house was right next to his parent's house and that Detroit screamed when they would cut logs.

    Just about every Amish sawmill here in Northern NY is driven by old Detroit diesels. Inexpensive to buy, easy to get parts for, and easy to keep running. It surprises people that those Amish sawyers are good mechanics, but they have to be, and they are.

      I live around Amish and I'm not surprised. Many people have many misconceptions about the Amish. Most of the Amish men in my area work as carpenters and day labor. Lots of roofing, painting, anything. They use power tools while working out in the world but never at home.

      @@chrisevans2645 I don't claim to be an expert on the Amish, but I have read the same thing, a lot of the way they do things depends on the interpretations of the local bishops. In some places, electricity is considered to be the evil to avoid, so the Amish furniture builders in that area take the electric motors off the woodworking equipment in their shops and replace them with pneumatic or hydraulic motors, powered by diesel driven compressors or hydraulic pumps. In other areas, the bishop holds that its isn't electricity, per se, that is to be avoided, but being connected and dependent on the outside "English" world, in those communities, they leave the electric motors in their table saws, and just run them off diesel generators.

    Gimmy motors when used as a stationary engine are best run full noise. You run them anywhere in between you get problems! That information came from a 50 year veteran in the mining industry over here. They were a popular engine amongst truckies over here & started to die-off in the early 80's due to fuel prices. Emission laws are what eventually killed an otherwise good engine!

    Simply the greatest diesel in world history and the BEST! Real diesels are 2 stroke ALWAYS! 😋 These are what is known as Clark cycle 2 stroke engines and are valve-uni-flow scavenged. I also have a super rare Day cycle 4-51 Detroit with NO valves that is loop scavenged exactly like a gas 2 stroke spark ignition engine but a diesel. These are loop scavenged with intake ports on one side of the cylinder and exhaust ports on the other side. They run great as well. They only made these in 2 (2-51) and 4 (4-51) cylinder versions. They only have one rocker per cylinder, for each injector, while the Clark cycle ones have 3 rockers per cylinder-center one for each injector, right and left numbers one and 3 rockers fir the valves. One for each exhaust valve in older 2 valve engines and one fir each 2 valves with a bridge over them to actuate bolt valves off each rocker in the later 4 valve per cylinder engines made for increased air flow. They are mechanical works of art and the best running engines in history. And YES, they are more efficient than 4 stroke diesels, despite what some may think. A well tuned Detroit will NOT smoke. All 4 stroke diesels are prone to pooe combustion and smoking. Detroit diesels are pure genius derived from a 2 stroke Elmore gasoline car engine made in 1912, the year GM bought them out because they were simply WAY too good and reliable! So you are seeing a continuation of an Elmore engine design here! 😋 BEST DIESELS EVER, PERIOD! 👍🏻🤘🤘🤘👌👌👌
