    Derek and Swami together are amazing.
    I just love Derek’s curiosity, it’s infectious.
    I also love the direction this channel brings to the table. Showing there’s so much more than the generational stereotypes.
    I enjoyed the Terrior lesson as well.

    Very interesting topic, and will instantly always remind me of Frenchy.
    Terroir & Appellation maps must be documented now, i loved hearing Swami, Kevin and Frenchy talk about this idea over the last few years...
    This is something lots of people would pay to see.
    There has to be some science lab testing required though, for sure, to prove the science.

    Maui Wowie is grown in Hāna on Maui where I live. I dont consider that to be an inferior plant, nor do I think its a mediocre strain. Can someone explain that? Its grown at sea level or just a couple hundred feet from the ocean. Thank you

    • @tonysmith8059
      @tonysmith8059 3 роки тому

      I don't have any answers to your question but Maui wowi is one of my favorite strains I was kind of thinking the same thing about the altitude

    • @YouTubalcaine
      @YouTubalcaine 3 роки тому +5

      They're essentially talking about establishing a certification process for new landraces. High quality cannabis can be grown anywhere a particular cultivar has been adapted to its local conditions, as long as the grower is sensitive to the plants' particular needs. Many of them are happier high in the mountains because that's where their ancestors came from. California has some of the best on the market today because they've been able to do this freely for a long time, but cannabis isn't is finicky as grapes so as other states open up and it's allowed to flourish in different climates then over time we'll be seeing more top shelf varieties coming out of many different places.
      You can grow Maui Wowie all over the world, but the best will always come from Hawaii (if you can find any of the original genetics, that is.) That's where terroir and appellations come in. This part is really about point of origin rather than quality. If you start growing pure Maui Wowie in Bell Springs, for example, you can eventually breed an outstanding variety, but it will be better suited for a higher elevation, different humidity levels, etc. By the time you develop a really amazing smoke it's no longer truly Maui Wowie (and shouldn't be called such) even though it's technically of the same lineage, and it probably won't do very well if you bring it back to Hāna.
      Keep in mind that the definition of quality is subjective, so what pleases one set of judges (who naturally tend to favor their own cannabis, sometimes to the point of snobbery) may be a completely different morphology, terpene profile, etc. than what becomes popular in another region (where the people likewise become accustomed to the products available in their own environment.) Consider the Icelandic love of fermented fish which may be revolting to other cultures - we might disagree on the evaluation, but that doesn't mean one of us is wrong. And what's at the trendy peak today could be ranked lower tomorrow.
      If you want your own unique label, throw a wide selection of seeds out the window, wait fifty years and then pick the best of whatever survived. Then you can _start_ cultivating for that abstract "perfection". There are an awful lot of arcane agricultural tips and tricks to help you produce really good cannabis, but we have to remember that context is what matters most and the herb has billions of years of evolutionary wisdom to help it find its way. Sometimes all it needs to grow into its potential is simply to be left alone so Mother Nature can work her magic without being throttled by the controlling hubris of man. If you want to grow the best ganja then you need to be its servant, not its master. If that can be done in Mendocino County, it can be done almost anywhere.

Trichomes are produced for many reasons by the plant, mostly for bug protection but they also change the micro climate of the area, think of it like the hair on your arm but with bug spray coated to them. Which is why we use silica to not only increase cell wall thickness but to produce protective trichomes.
