ANCIENT MACHINE Build | The Pump Drill

- How do I drill a hole? Primitive Pump Drills have been used all throughout history as a means of drilling holes in bone, stone, wood and pretty much anything that needed a hole in it. Oh yeah...you can also make a fire with it! The Primitive Pump Drill in the video is one of many types that utilizes a sliding antler clamp.
Some footage is missing from the video...due to one person, me not hitting record at one point. However putting the las holes in the pump lever and securing the cordage to the top is easily understood.
Thanks a million for watching, liking and sharing my videos. I appreciate the support you all have given this channel! Your time, interests and feedback are important to me. I really want to say thanks to each and every person who likes, subscribes and shares my videos. Much respect!

You loose that disc and a newbie archealogical student pass by...Professor!! Professore look !! Ancient civilization!!!
My late father collected arrow heads and such. He has several drill points in his collection which I inherited. It was nice to see how such things as the pump drill and drill points were created and used. Great video! Thank you Donnie!
I absolutely adore the sheer amount of effort you go through to keep everything as prim as possible bro! Putting in the work! 🤜🏽🤙🏽💜
Thanks. I appreciate that greatly. Much respect.
That was a ton of work. Awesome stuff.

Thanks. Appreciate you watching and following the adventures.
Thanks for the great content man, I used to weekly when I was homeless just go into the forest and rough it and just get away from anything and everything, sit next to streams, make fires, deer watch and cook some steaks, and learning more technique's from you is great 💜 I hope our paths cross one day so I can pay my respects to your art and culture
Excellent video well done now I know how to make one if ever I need to thank you for sharing this with us six stars brother
My pleasure. Thank.
So cool how primitive people came up with these simple yet effective tools. I enjoyed the demonstration, thank you!
Yo Donny 💪
Great and meditative, calming content, liked it a lot.

Tied. Thank you for this video.
Dammit Donny, absolutely amazing! Can't stop watching your videos! More like this please!
Taladro rústico, me encantó!!!
Great video!
Thanks. Appreciate it greatly.
This man out here giving away free knowledge which we all could find ourselves using. Thank you sir 🙏
Outstanding Donnie. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and inspiring many
I almost forgot , I definitely plan on ordering a copy of your book , really like your workmanship and old-school approach ! ! !
Time to drill holes in all the tools. Hang them on your side, and be a primitive janitor. LoL, JK... Another amazing video.
Salt cedar gets a lot of use here in NM!
Thats so freaking amazing well done.
Awesome. Thanks so very much!
Thanks donny great video as always
Man your videos are so good. This is everything we all imagined doing in the playground as kids.
seeing stuff like this makes think abt how sophisticated early humans probably were.
Love your craftsmanship. 👊
Found some stone that's maybe worth trying to do something with.
I don't have thick leather to work with so I'm going with a few layers of heavy canvas for now.
Canvas works fine. An d t-shirt or even towel Will he it done. Go to goodwill, pick up an old leather garment and modify it for your Knapping needs.
Awesome work done man 👍
I love your stuff. Thank you again. I wish I could have personal training from you but I'm sure you are busy lol. I do truly appreciate your help. Take care
I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I could only imagine it takes actual years to develop your skill set and unfortunately I've only recently discovered your channel. At any rate, I'll keep watching, learning and appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
Thanks Donny

Love your videos man i watch them all the time, they’re inspiring and informative, i cant wait to make my way to an area where i can practice my bushcraft survival skills, its something I’ve been interested in and preparing for since i was a kid, now i just gotta go try it out!
This was a really great video, and I’m truly thankful for how much effort you put into what you do! Subbed!
Nice job don always wanted to build one but
No time like the present. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Donnie ! I don’t know how long it took to make the drill. I enjoyed watching the process ! You probably made the basket ? Awesome video !
Appreciate you watching. The longest portion was grinding and shaping my round weight stone. Everything else was pretty much ready to go.
I just love donny so much. I watch all of your videos and forever will. 🥰
How many hours did that took to make that? Im surprised everytime!!
Nice
Great video! Ive been wanting to make a pump drill for a while to up my primitive skills, thanks for the video! Could you by chance make a Cahokia point?
Cahokia point…no problem. Appreciate you watching. Thanks n
@@DonnyDustsPaleoTracks no problem! Thanks for the info you give us!
안녕하세요.
😲🤙🏻
This vid got wrecked by the algorithm for sure
Wow
Love it! Do you have any details on the use of the sliding antler collet? Not seen anything like that before.
Your pump drill disk reminds me of the arrow-shaft straightener that I saw in Larry Dean Olson's book , I guess maybe you could use it for both purposes if you intended . Well done Sir , looks time-consuming , but meditative , and constructive .
Is that soapstone that you're using for your counterweight? REALLY nice work there, Donny.
Would it not have been way easier and more energy efficient to make the spindle flywheel from clay? Primitive technology does a similar thing, seems very long winded to shape and drill the rock. Not saying youre wrong, just wondered if there was any advantage to doing it that way.🤙
Advantage is…mine is more durable. I move around and travel….cave to cave and shelter to shelter. I believe he pretty much stays in place. Clay when fired can be fragile. Stone is better suited for travel, durable and will be heavier in drilling deeper holes in harder materials. Great question.
@@DonnyDustsPaleoTracks fair point. Yours would definitely last longer, wouldnt have factored that in to the pro/con etc. 🙂
Raises a thought in my head: is it the diameter or just the mass that makes the difference? For example, if you could make a big thin disc it could be lighter and thus better for travel with the extra diameter creating the same force as a smaller but heavier disc. Im gonna go look at some physics equations now to see if thats right. 🤔🤣
And that is how the Flintstones made wheels.
I stilll think im gonna be a lazy ass and just throw a paint roll spinner in my bug out bag w some steel bits, after i find a way to attach them 😂😂.
Yep same
So cool! Do you have a video about the outdoor conditions best for making stone tools? I want to try this but don’t know where to begin
I have tons of videos on FLINTKNAPPING. I have several playlists as well that can narrow the focus.
@@DonnyDustsPaleoTracks where can i go to find a location like the place you’re set up here tho? It seems like such unique geography im not very familiar with in Michigan, just need to look for areas with a lot of surface flint ?
@@WSFM_Rex yes. Everything starts with some good research. This is an area of land I own and frequent. All around the USA you can find different stones to knapp. Look into what ancient cultures used and that will lead you down a rabbit hole of discovery.
@@WSFM_Rex go find an old stream bed.
I wonder if a big piece of shale or slate would suffice for the weight. I also wonder if theres a way you can, say off balance the weight to give the bow drill a more hammer drill like effect? Might make it go through wiod and stone a tad quicker
Great points. Slate will work. Clay discs, wood, stone and even some bone will work. I find the weight of the round stone makes a huge difference in drilling speed more important stone is more durable.
@@DonnyDustsPaleoTracks thats good to know that you can use other things apart from stone.
I like the design plus when i do wood carving I’ve been wanting to make power tools using the bow drill method kind if ironic though power tools that don’t use any power apart from a bit of kinetic energy and friction would save on the power bill 😅
What is the exact purpose of the circular stone for the functioning of the drill? Weight and balance?
Torque
Downward pressure, spinning balance and the weight rotation, in conjunction with the cordage allows for spinning consistency.
Hiya donny, where do you even begin, to start to learn flint nappin, let alone where do you mine the or locate the raw materials, when not if, the grid goes down? Im in Wales uk
damn i'll have to try this.
gonna be hard cuz i'm not a vet like don and i'm not good at identifying and working with natural materials, but this should be easier than a bow drill (to pump i mean. bow drill is easier to make).
how long did it take to get all that stone dust?
Hey donny I got a question for ya. How much gear do do you or would you usually carry for say a 3 day expedition?
Great question. Well…considering the weather and time of year…I always carry a Blade, Blanket, Bottle and Burn (fire source). Those are my rules. Haha. Everything else is extra. It depends how difficult or easy I want a trip to be.
Awesome! But why didn't you use a round rock from the beginning? That would have been a lot less work.
Where’s the fun in that. The stone I chose was soapstone. It’s softer and easier to shape the hole in it.
@@DonnyDustsPaleoTracks True. I didn't know it was soapstone. That is indeed a fun stone to work with!

👍
Would the same idea work for a friction fire drill?
Was that suppose to culminate to something? 🤣🤣🤣🤣❤️
Is that a type of soap stone? Seams easy enough to grind to shape. If it is how do you find some? Thanks!
Is their a chance the center stick and the leaver used to make the drill move could catch fire? Or is that why you only drill in bursts?
Just say no or yes. But does the pump drill work with logs? I need to know the answer
Like nr!!! 1k
Can that also be use to start a fire or is it made different? Either it was you or someone else made one similar, to create fire?
Can u make a Japanese long bow?
Where do you find the sap that acts like glue
Need to show how to make a fire starter from your pump drill
Have you tried to build a Stone Age balisong? I wonder if it’s even possible.
I can look into it. Thank you for watching.
Can you use it as a fire drill?
👊😎🤙🍻
What did you shape the disc out of?
can you make a waste oil or i guess waste fat burner?
Yeah.
@@DonnyDustsPaleoTracks i was going to make one from metal but after watching your channel for a bit i been thinking about
making it with clay bone and wood and put a bellows on it too with spigot for the oil
can't wait to see what kind of design you come up with
@@kanekopoint4273 no worries. Appreciate the reply.
How the hell that stone is so soft?
It’s soapstone. Mineral rich talk. That’s why I chose it.
