Regarding the deck: Where I live (Sweden), we get a lot of rain in the summer. You seem to also have a lot of downpour. Some sort of rain shelter is a life saver when you have guests and it starts dripping. I highly recommend planning for sun/rain shelter when you plan your deck. We often use large sun parasols, but that requires a lot of space, which will be an issue with the type of deck you are planning. An alternative is using cloth screens with mechanical arms or sails with the same type of mechanisms that are used on boats to roll up the sails automatically. In any case it is easier to plan any of this before you build the deck. And perhaps you can do something unusual and spectacular to instill awe in the rest of us :-)

Put the BBQ away from the house, consider the fire hazard against wood siding. You could also put it into a bump out on the deck., you have more space on the deck and the outside perimeter becomes more interesting than a straight line, read planting opportunity. thanks for taking us along, good luck with the reno.
I was thinking that exact same thing the moment he mentioned it! My neighbors house almost burned to the ground because of the grill up against the house. I would locate it at the end of the deck next to the kitchen so you can pass things back and forth to the master griller

Think about being able to put a roof over the deck, especially over the French doors. That way you can have the doors open in all weather. We renovated the deck at our house recently and we use the covered area all the time
Not sure of exact rules but they may need to submit another development application for a roofed deck.

About the stairs, we built them all around the deck, (only two sides due to the layout), and it gives great opportunities. Like, we do have chairs and bench and stuff ON the deck, but 90% of the time, if we are just chilling and enjoying a nice evening, we actually sit on the stairs, not on the furnitures! 😀
On the deck I would think stairs closer to the driveway would be useful. Not saying to move the stairs already have in the design but to add a 2nd set of stairs so you can easily get to the deck from the driveway.
Agreed. Put them on the end. Another option is to extend the deck along the front of the house and mimic the angle of the driveway and the stairs can be wide on the angled side. It might have to wait until after the front entrance is gone though.

I love it when decks have steps that go the whole (or nearly the whole) length/width of a deck, this really allows for the deck to open with the yard and feel like one space. Also provides convenient access to different destinations in the yard weather it be the drive way or something else.
If you make the seating for the deck in wood and decide to build it like a boxed style bench, a good idea is to make the seat part hinged at the back so you can open it up and it can be storage for things possibly the cushion and covers for over winter. also making corners of decks at a 45 instead of a 90 is alot more pleasing to the eye on steps and corners
Yet to see one of these that doesn’t either let water in to the contents or rot out prematurely. There are gaps between deck boards obviously so in countering that people put boards like marine ply etc under for the lid but then water is trapped and that’s not good. Maybe leave the gaps between boards and keep things in waterproof tubs underneath.
for the deck, go out square from the house towards the driveway, then turn parallel to the driveway (instead of 90 degrees), build out along the drive until far enough and then 90 degrees turn towards the kitchen. (seen from above, basically make the deck a squared object which is turned as compared to the house, parallell to the driveway)

Yep my thoughts too. You will end up with 2 large outdoor courts and the narrowest part will be at the corner of the house which will act more like a passage between those 2 spaces. Still usable space. More interesting shape though. Why not ask your designers though? They will have some great ideas.
Like some of the suggestions already - the seats around the edge that Jess proposed are good. The deck at my parents place has them and thy get a lot of use. Making them enclosed boxes with a hinge lid so you can store things in them (like pillows etc) seems a good addition. Having the stairs located so they come all the way to the edge of the driveway will mean you don’t have to walk across wet grass if you want to come and go across the deck if it’s raining. Finally, I wouldn’t necessarily put cover over the deck, but either attachment points for a shade sail or some holes in a few of the seats that you could sit a big umbrella in might work.

1. stairs close to the driveway (you'll want more than one point of access
2. built in seats might be too low for the table
3. the side section don't make it too shallow - you'll want space for people to pass the bbq and kitchen window space
4. factor in privacy screens - even if you don't think you want them

Various levels into the garden works great. It breaks the bogan rectangle and gives you versatile spaces to sit, have pot plants etc. it also varies the transition from deck to garden by essentially making big steps. So much nicer than plain old steps.
Make built-in storage in the deck for pillows etc. And ad a little kitchen top with sink with a water tap beside the barbeque. It will be handy for the kitchen garden as well.
The barbecue is perfectly located to burn the house down, niiice! ;-)
For the deck, on the shady side by the window you should drop it to a platform deck only about 10inches tall with no rail so that you have a nice large open platform to grill and enjoy. Also, with that part of the deck being a platform the exterior window won't be super low on the deck.
Less than 1.0m were don't require a balustrade/rail in NZ. I'd kept the deck at house FL.
Welcome back, you guys and Laura Kampf are my favourite Reno channels atm. There are some great ideas already, the 2nd stair near the driveway and the seat storage. Can I suggest integrated planter boxes that flow on from the seating along the perimeter and also a space for a future wood fired oven right around the far kitchen corner. I also recommend Alan Brown's the complete Kiwi Pizza Oven book for inspiration and recipes.
Wider on the kitchen side with the bulk of the seating and table there as well because of the shade based on Canadian weather, when it's hot out you don't want to be in direct sun and no dark decking because you will burn your feet. It gets hot enough here, for two flipping months anyways that even a cream color gets to hot for bare feet. Have a few chairs on the sunny side or just drag them around if you want to be in the sun. I expect you have mosquito's or some other irritating bug or neighbor so maybe screen a portion of the shade side in. Good luck with that many projects in such a short amount of time.
I love the renovation. I love your video. As an American, the accent and the pronunciation of "deck" has made this my favorite video you have done. The description on adding plants around the "deck" to make it look more like a part of the garden is my absolute favorite.
Why not rotate the deck a bit to the left (seen from above)? That will give you a bit more space in the corner of the house and give you another bigger seating option at the kitchen window.

For our space outside the kitchen (same idea as you), we use shade sails. Great for summer (stops the low sun from heating the s/s bench) & take down for winter to allow winter sun in the kitchen. Also quick-ish to put up so gives a little shelter during rainy autumn.
I'd put steps down from the patio doors to the deck at about half-height, to reduce the visual impact of a massive deck floating several feet off the garden and make it integrate better. Your "crossing the threshold brain" will cope well with steps, it won't seem like much of a barrier, and the consequences of falling off the deck are less likely to be fatal, which makes design easier (less need for railings).
A small concrete sink with cold water only right next to the BBQ and on the deck … so Ur not washing grills or dirty hands inside the nice Kitchen.
The bonus is you can fill it with Ice and it becomes an outdoor drinks cooler ice bath.
Mood lighting within the deck is a must too. I’m also a fan to have waterproof IP68 sockets on outdoor entertainment features … which can be used when needed (think of jumping castles if you have kids, or a cement mixer for a project)… so you don’t have to run multiple extention cords across the house
No wisdom regarding a deck, but on the other hand, while you were off on vacay, I caught up on many older videos and the thing I didn't realize I was missing was the presence of your wife. She became a mainstay of your Nelson move and didn't think much of it until....she wasn't there and all I could think was 'Nice video but...where's his wife?' Nice to see you both back

We just built a (big) deck down here in Dunedin. We went for built-in seats around a table (which I still need to build!) which we love. With a wind wall behind the seats - an absolute necessity for the NE winds! The deck has absolutely transformed our home!

At the kitchen window, you have an accordian window so the whole window space can be opened. And table mounted flush to the window space so you can lean across to pass things in and out.
Glad you had a good break! For the deck I would built in some planting into the deck (think a built in plantpot) with a small lip around the edge, add in some plants both in the pot and surround it which are similar, it will create a transition between the two spaces and it will be less visually contrasting. Similar pots could be built around the deck to create the levels you wanted!
I have been watch you both now for will over a year now and been watching the reno on your house and will watch it till you have finished it all, can't wait to see this all unfold.
Consider your deck table. A lot of them are round, with a round umbrella above. A lot of composite decking material can be bent into curves. This is a great way to get out of the box- and feel more surrounded by nature. I would center 3/4 circle at the outside corner of the deck for a space efficient seating niche. An octagonal shape can also work well, and can later support a gazebo structure, which can be screened off to keep bugs out. Consider bringing electrical to this corner, for heat, laptop charging, fan, lighting, etc.

Bench seats a good idea. I wrapped the decking up and over my benches for a unified look. Wide boards less cluttered.
I grew up in a house that had built in seating on the deck and we rarely used it. The outside furniture was much more comfortable and could be moved around.
No windows bench, Jesses plan is nice I’d only add a pergola with timber on top no sheeting but then grow grapes to form a canopy over time. During the first few years also grow pumpkins on the pergola to fill in the canopy while you wait. As they grow fast.
Glad the broons are back. You should consider the flow of the floor inside the kitchen/living room for instance if your flooring going to run at an angle you should also run the outside deck board the same direction so it flows

You should make a Murphy bed for your study. Add some extra sleeping space to your home plus I really like watching you tackle cabinetry jobs.
if you let your deck flow over in a attached flower/plant bed it gives you a feeling of being IN the garden and visually it flows better into the rest of the garden. From the garden the view is like a wooden or brick flower bed with a table and chairs on top of it. As you would live on a plot with a slope

You could make the deck in an organic shape, so no corners but curves.
It will blend in more when you add plants.
One option to give the deck a more layered look with a flat deck would be to use some raised planter boxes around it to give you a step up from ground level, or clad on trellis with climbing plants.
In the South Island you need the BBQ and seating area covered. Sun umbrellas are a pain in the butt and are more hassle that they are worth. We built our deck Aussie style covered and access to the kitchen without walking through the house with the food and dishes.
I love how the old hinges enabled you to open the door way more than you'd ever need.

I really like the bench seat idea what you could do is make them a little deeper and add a back rest to them and then behind the back rest could be some planter box’s. It would allow you to have more planting space around the deck but be out of the way. I have something similar on my deck up on the kapiti coast (NZ)
I would recommend stairs to the driveway/yard directly outside of the French doors. The French doors are the largest opening into the house and would be functional to have stairs there in order to bring in oversized item or groceries from the car.
How about two sets of stairs? One to the garden, and one to the driveway. It would serve as short cut convenience and emergency path. The BBQ grill might be better suited away from the wall. That's sound like a potential grease trap.

When I built my deck which is a very similar design to yours. I added a bar and bar seating and altered the middle window to a french kitchen window. it works amazingly well and allows people to chat with the person in the kitchen. When I entertain, the person cooking in the kitchen (me) often feels excluded. This stops this and makes them feel included as the conversations keeps happening. I also set up a coffee station in the kitchen there so I could serve coffee direct to the bar.
Instead of a deck what about stone patio area? You could have steps to access the living room and kitchen. It'd make planting easier as it'd be at ground level. Adding a bbq or firepit would be much easier too. Great to see you back!!
Welcome Back!! I like Jess' decking idea with the bench seats. Try laying out some templates on the lawn & see if there will be any issues with the layout or if it gives you any more ideas. Also think about maybe having stairs on the corner & access to/from the driveway.
I recall one or two videos previously with those bench seats and if memory serves, Paerau did such a beautiful job on those things. Good way to catch up with an old mate too.
I would make decks edge to parallel to driveway, so it would expand in the corner, and also in the kitchen window side I would make it parallel to the house. I think it would look better when looking from plot junction. It would give you more room for table group, but would challenge for table form. Maybe rectangle table would not be best solution then.
Loved the single piece of glass in the French doors. Improved the look of the house and works with the existing window style. As far as the deck is concerned make qsure you have enough space considering tables chairs and walk and standing areas. It’s a basic house I would keep the deck aligned with the house, no funny angles or curves. Umbrellas for shade and all movable furniture. That way you allow the house/deck to better integrate with the garden.
One set of steps to avoid wasting deck space with walk ways and provide overflow space into the garden if you have a lot of people. Keep it simple taking clues from the house. I don’t know if you need a railing I suspect you do then stainless steel posts and rails (316) with wires or glass would look good. You could also just use frameless glass (might be too modern for house?) but people want to stand and lean against things or hold onto a rail. Wires let the breeze through glass makes it warmer (too hot in summer?). Stainless is an expensive option and with glass even more expensive, but I suggest it’s simple and minimises visual impact. It’s amazing how much thinking is required just to get a simple deck right. Good luck with it.
That plant looks like Borage….. We built a deck a few years back, it’s 6m X 3m and 3m and is just about deep enough to have a table that will seat 4 people around it and have chairs not bumping onto the railings or house… I’d be looking at 3.5m-4m to be comfortable. Also you really need to consider shade in sunny Nelson, I’d be inclined to build the majority of the deck out the side of the house that has the most shade in the afternoon and evening and put a narrower side of the deck along the driveway, so build the deck out over the lawn area and take advantage of the shade and push out into the garden more rather than making the deck near the french doors the widest area… basically the opposite of what your suggesting….
i'd put the bbq on the yard side, not against the house. I've scorched every wall my grill has been within a 1/3 meter no matter how nice my grill is. Maybe an extra tall railing post with a sunshade connected to the house, with the corner of the triangle over the grill.
So exciting! I would make the outside corner of the deck a 45/ rounded that doesn’t dominate the front yard too much, keeps it organic and is good for conversation seating.

If you put a box hedge or some sleepers around the perimeter. Or raise the garden bed up with the deck. It will make it disappear, or feel sunken into the land. If you did the garden bed, you could create a herb/edible garden around it.
Personally, I would try to keep the stairs in line with your main entrance/exit for best traffic flow, other wise you’re always walking around objects and people to get in or out. For one, it makes it easier when your carrying things in and out of the house. Also, I would try to make the deck as large as you possibly can because once it’s loaded up with furniture and stuff it becomes much smaller than planned. Hope this helps. Happy 2023! Have some afternoon shade, otherwise you will only be using the deck after the sun goes down. Our designers suggested a western deck for the morning and an eastern deck for the afternoon, and they are gold. Otherwise we would cook ourselves, never mind the bbq

I don't finish my own personal renovation, not ever probably. I'm quite comfortable living in a type building site since it is my life. However maintenance doesn't stop. Great video and nice garden. Aesthetically pleasing.
Composite decking instead of wood! So much longer lasting and far less maintenance. And the stuff looks really nice nowadays, with some great colour choices (at least over here in the Netherlands…).
Yes, I'm just doing a deck in NZ and composite decking is the way to go, especially in NZ as the climate,rain etc make timber decking a pain to maintain etc, especially on their shaded area where the timber would probably be damp most of the time and be slippery....
Cannot agree..perhaps you have some super great composite options over there in NL but the ones we have in LV are really bad. Plus we have freeze periods every now and then in winter and the composite is not really suitable for it. I am in process of building a deck myself and I plan to lay thermally treated deck boards instead of regular or composite boards.
wrap the stairs around the corner straight out from the french doors and put bi-fold windows into the kitchen to create a servery (super handy)! and put the built in seating from the stairs to the other end of the deck maybe. Another way to integrate it in put irregular spaced steppers from the stairs to the driveway with planting between and around the path.

If you plan on doing the outdoor bbq/kitchen in that location. Make an outdoor sink and connect it to your indoor plumbing, since the indoor kitchen is directly behind that wall on the inside?

Consider building poles for removable sun sails. That way you can make all weather spaces and keep the light into the house in winter. Also great for temp control in summer when laid out correctly.

Suggestions? If you plan on canning your fruits and vegetables, and many do, maybe design a space next to the grill for a gas or electric 2 burner stove so you can do that outside and not heat up the house. I'm from Alabama and 100f/40c days around harvest is common. No one wants to heat up the house with canning so its done on the back porch or off in a berry shed. Also, looking at where you want to put the grill? Power lines would have to move and the side of the house would be endangered if there were a flare up. Cheap insurance is to either put it away from the house, or put up a false wall made of corrogated galvanized roofing which is fire proof. Also, you do have some space in that side yard... you could put together a shelf up high on the wall with an exterior plug and hardwire to your home entertainment system and put together an outdoor 'drive in' style theater. Would need a projector, some speakers you could build in, and a screen and that can be plain sail cloth you hang up or a fancy outdoor theater screen.

For the deck, where Jess had the seating you could add a low fence or trellis to separate the outdoor space from the drive as the french doors might act like your front door. Then have a low garden between the fence and drive to make it look more like it's in the garden and separate from the drive space. Then grown something like beans or passion fruit up the fence/trellis. You could add steps to the left side towards the garage. The servery on the kitchen side sounds amazing..!
Welcome back guys, happy new year and as far as the reno’ is concerned, you’ve got it!
I’m going through a first floor addition renno at the moment, and only have half a house. Renovating existing structures really has their unique challenges that’s for sure, especially when they’ve been renovated previously. We’ve found a few “oddities” good thing we have a great team, to keep things on track.
Two things- Will furniture block doors opening/closing or will you need to shuffle each time. Second, the kitchen window section - need depth to move. One on the bbq tools doesn’t want to move each time another walks past with goodies from the kitchen window. Somewhere to pop cushions and umbrella etc eg a box unless you leave them out all summer. I do enjoy your videos

Great to have you and Jess back Scott, glad you guys enjoyed your much deserved break. We built a merbau deck around a bungalow that was curved in order to be less invasive to the garden.
Personally I prefer Scott’s plan for the deck as it allows for space in the shade and sun, although Jess’s could be great if there was a shade sail or an umbrella or something like that.
I wish you both the very best of luck with reaching your goal of finishing this year. What you have achieves so far looks fantastic. One comment on your plan for a pass through window onto the deck. The house we purchased had one already installed, and in ten years we have never used it. We have part of the kitchen bench on the inside which makes the reach to the outside an uncomfortable distance, so we just walk out the doors onto the veranda. Just food for thought.

A front door is important for the aesthetics of a home but houses with rear detached garages like yours the back door is often the most used everyday door. Definitely want quick access from garage to house so as suggested maybe a second set of stairs might be a good idea. Being the one side is full sun all day you will want to think of shading i.e. a pergola style roof, retractable awning, shade sail, or gable extension from your current roof covering at least that portion.

I agree, a second set of steps on the drive way side you wont regret. also built in storage under a few of the benches would come in handy also.
I usually suggest locating a grill or barbecue away from the house because the high heat can easily damage the cladding/siding. My inclination with the barbecue is to turn and put it on the bottom end of the deck (otherside of the bench pass through) so it removes from being against the house and keeps it out of the traffic lane from the door to the steps. And in my experience as nice as built in seating is, it commits the layout of the deck furniture to that style and if you do a sold seat back it creates a wall along the perimeter of the deck making it feel more closed off. Defeating Jesse’s point of keeping it streamlined, if you do I’ve seen people do drape hanging plants off the edge to disguise the bulk.
You may want to consider ordering door furniture from the US or Australia.
Bathroom fittings are much cheaper from overseas too.
In relation to the BBQ area, just consider if you want a simple bbq or perhaps a full outdoor kitchen.
If you like cooking with a charcoal BBQ, you will want it a bit further away.
I've always sort of liked the look of decks that hover just above the surface of the ground (where basically there is one step up from the yard onto the deck) and rather have the other steps down nearest the door. In this case, you'd then have a deck that can be integrated into the garden (as Jess mentioned) and another couple of steps that come out from the french doors themselves. That may not be desirable though as it would shift the main deck level down from the level of the kitchen and Jess mentioned that it would be nice to let folks in the kitchen chat with those on the deck via the open french doors. I suppose that all depends on how many total steps down are needed to get to garden level. If it's only 3, for example, you could have two steps down from french door to deck and a third, continuous step down into the garden that "wraps" the whole edge of the deck. This might also interfere somewhat with the window pass-through idea, though.

Hi Scott and Jess, regarding the deck I would have the deck narrower where it heads over to the driveway line but then follow the angle of the driveway to give you a bit more body/ width to the deck, I would then go across on a angle to keep that body of the deck off the corner of the house but it would need to change angle again to head back to the house, getting narrower just like the other side. I think if you picture framed the decking it would look amazing with the angles.
