      Boot knife. Someone probably was wearing it on the boot and it fell off. Now that I think of it, it's very likely that that's what happened.

    My older brother (a typical non-knife guy, who grew up in the 70s & 80s) got one of these for me (most generous guy you've ever met), thinking he made a great score, handed it to me (his geeky knifeaholic little brother) and said, "How much do you think I paid for it?" I said "$15-$20?" He nodded resignation and and then I consoled him and told him that boot daggers/knives don't need to be amazing quality, because as Skall said, they're kind of one trick ponies... It's an amazing piece, especially for the money. Great Review Skall! :)

      That one trick can save your life. I recommend this knife, mainly because of the sheath. The draw is reliable, as I have k-bar with the same thumb snap sheath. This is a quick draw blade system and I highly recommend it for self defense. I wear them inverted around the waist, for fast, stealth draws. The knife itself looks good, as well. Never use your knife for anything other than self defense. It needs to stay sharp, always!

    • @southernknight9983
      @southernknight9983 7 років тому +8

      iTheGeek - Once you use your self defense knife, you will use it again and again, til it's dull and wont cut through clothing or even, perhaps, skin.
      Dont mix up your tools! I never use my defensive knives for anything other than self defense. If I never use it, then good! If I do have to use it for self defense, that is good too. I carry a Spyderco Stretch for light utility work.
      Some people, like me, dont have permits to carry guns, so I carry the next best thing.
      A dull knife is a shitty knife. Don't ruin the value of your self defense by using it for utilities. You defeat the purpose of it.

    • @jamesforgie6594
      @jamesforgie6594 6 років тому +3

      iTheGeek mate, a knife attack is over in about three seconds. If they’re close enough to use a knife you don’t have time to draw a pistol. Although, frankly, you wouldn’t have time to draw a knife, either.
      If you get attacked, the best thing you can do is run. Also, America is the only first world country where guns are common. In my country they’re straight up illegal.

    I have the exact same dagger as this, but labelled with Mtech and a different sheath. I bought it because it was cheap and I wanted something else to practice sharpening on, but my wife liked it so much that she now has it. I think it's a nice little dagger for the budget.

    • @Skallagrim
      @Skallagrim  10 років тому +16

      Mtech has extremely low prices. It's kind of hit or miss, some of their stuff is pretty good for budget knives, some is rather junky.

      @DougSims 10 років тому

      I also have the same knife with a different branding. Mine is from "Wolf Creek Knives" (I think, I threw the box away). My sheath looks similar, but the clip is a stiffer silver clip and the snap release is reinforced to stay in place once it is released.
      However, the steel on mine does not seem like 440C. In fact, it doesn't even seem to be tempered steel. It looks very soft with a noticeable grain to it. Fairly easy to sharpen, but definitely won't hold an edge like some of my other knives with a better steel.
      Of course, as you said, it only needs to hold an edge once. ;)
      I didn't buy mine though, I got it as a Christmas present from my brother, since I had a fixed blade knife on my Christmas list. I guess he thought a dagger was a similar substitution for a fixed blade tactical knife.

    I find this knife the perfect replacement for my ancient K-bar original version. It is an exact copy, dimension wise and has made improvements in all the right ways. A hardened rubber handle, has great grip and is not cold to the touch, in winter, as the metal k-Bar handle is. The sheath is also perfect and improved, as well, making it easier to detach from your waist or boot, without having to fight it, just to get it off your person.
    It is lighter and feels even better in the hand than the K-Bar version.
    The edge has a bit more belly, as well, for better cutting and slashing and not taking away from thrusting at all. Perfect blade!
    I carry it inverted, on my belt, for a fast and stealthy draw. By the time someone realizes that I have a knife, they will already be bleeding.
    I am glad to carry a knife like this, again.
    Thank you S&W!!!

    I used to carry this as a pdw while in uniform around Fayettenam. The knife is just a bit too bulky to properly blouse your uniform around while wearing a boot so I preferred to carry it on my belt. The clip gripped the wide strap rigger style belt quite well as it was stated that this is intended for military or police use. In civilian attire it does fine as far as fitting in your boot and having your pants cover it with no lines. (Not that I EVER did that, that would be illegal! ) I will say that if you have it strapped to your ankle it's going to be fumbly and awkward if you intend to bear it to use, so I would recommend switching it to your waist if you feel your situation is leading to a confrontation. Again, since I NEVER carried it in civilian attire I wouldn't recommend wearing it on your waist full time if personal reassurance without freaking anyone out is your goal, it makes clear lines under lighter fabrics of non combat uniform. This knife is clear in intent and purpose of design so if you do pull it out you ARE going to freak people out, it meets every hallmark people expect of "stabby hurty knives" you wouldn't really want to use it full time anyway, as the steel it's made of rates somewhere between "bad milk" and "good cheese" and dulls easily.

    I just gotta say that I'm extremely grateful for the self defense laws we have here in Utah, USA.
    You can conceal or open carry any knife, dagger, or heck, even a literal sword if you wanted. Age is not restricted, either. As long as you're not a restricted person (some kinds of criminals or mentally unstable people), and as long as you don't act dangerously to others with your knife, you're pretty much good to go.
    And we have some of the most free gun laws in our country, which allow most people over 18 (that's right, not 21 in Utah) to open carry (or concealed carry with a permit) a handgun. Also, we have laws that say you do not have to try to run before using lethal force against an imminently dangerous attacker out in public (Stand Your Ground laws), and if someone enters your house/car/other private property illegally while you are in it, you are almost always justified to shoot them on sight (Castle Defense laws).
    It is vitally important to not have to hesitate to defend your life in a life-or-death situation, because that hesitation may be what gets you killed. Having laws like we have in Utah is wonderful in my opinion, because I don't have to worry that I'll go to prison for defending myself and my family.

    I acquired one of these knives in 2010 when it was pulled on me in a subway in NYC luckily I was able to take control of the knife and situation and quickly subdued the threat I love the way it felt in my hand almost live it was attached to it, the knife performed extremely well easily sliced through thick leather and denim but I'm not sure if the tip was broken before I got it or the night I got it either way I repaired the tip and it never leaves my side. I recommend this blade it saved my life a few times since I've owned it

    I picked up one of these in 2007, had to resharpen it a few times and get the snap clip on the sheath replaced toward the end of last year (broke during some rough handling). Aside from that, never had a problem with it.
    Due to the softness of the steel, I wouldn't say it's 440C.

    This knife is well built and you can sharpen it to a hair shaving level. Its tactical design is for self defense . It would work great for using it in tactical situations. If you have to leave it in an assailant's chest because he attacked, you it is priced such that you can replace it at a nominal cost. This is not a suggestion but merely an observation

    I got gifted the same one but made by spanish manufacturer RUI. It came with a different sheath though. Canvas I think. I like the sheath, it is nice to the touch and has a big belt loop.
    Anyway, It looks almost identical barring the brand markings and the RUI version actually has "Stainless steel 440 titanium coated" written on it.
    The giftor (?) paid 15 bucks for it all these years ago, still serves me quite fine on climbing and camping trips and such. I admit, other knives would be more useful overall, but in the end, with imagination you could get everything done with nothing but a rock, so the sentimental value wins on that one. ^^

    I've owned one of these S&W boot knives for a number of years now, and have generally been happy with it. I have carried occasionally in my boot, and I will say that if you are going to carry it that way it is best to wear long & thick socks that stay pulled up. I once rubbed a blister on my left calf walking around all day with the knife in my boot while wearing short socks & the rubber grip rubbing against my leg. Other than that, I would have only positive things to say about this knife, and carried it on my last vacation last year when I wore it on several hikes. With proper socks on you'll quickly stop noticing it in the boot, and will be wearing it everywhere as I did on that vacation. I would find my self coming back to the hotel at night and finding myself surprised when I realized I was still wearing it in my boot. For the price it is a capable blade that just might save your life, so get one.

    It has been my experience that the 'couch potato' crowd rarely takes into consideration the full ramifications of self-defense. How it is done and what happens after. The mental state of mind one must possess. Are you willing to *kill*? Up close and *very* personally? Additionally in a knife fight the winner goes to the hospital. You won't walk away untouched. When put in those terms, most people are not actually willing to do what it takes to fight with a knife. I have no training but sadly I do have the state of mind.

      Exactly. I generally recommend to carry a non-lethal self-defense tool. You can still carry a knife for tool use and maybe as a last ditch backup when things can really ugly.

      That's interesting, when I think about it I probably could stab someone at least once before realising that I couldn't continue, as in if someone attacked me I would probably black out or freeze as soon as a significant amount of blood was drawn, and I most certainly wouldn't have the mind state to get over it easily afterwards. I've never been exposed to a great deal of violence, whether that is a good thing or not is a debatable question.

      Sai's Afflicted To 'win' a knife fight you pretty much have to hit them hard and fast and often. Not stopping until either them or you fall down. It is ugly and horrible and no one should ever be in that situation. I never want to experience that. Because even if I 'won', something in me would most likely die.

    • @conde6077
      @conde6077 10 років тому +9

      That's a good attitude to hold, I wouldn't expect to be in a knife fight, mainly because I don't actually carry a knife and I'd probably flee if I could. Ideally people wouldn't need self defense, but I guess even now it is still necessary in some areas. That makes me sad.

      Speaking only as a couch potato with some _very_ basic stick-them-with-the-pointy-end level training (and subsequently no delusions of actual skills) and as someone who has found himself in the necessary state of mind, I agree but I also have to say that I can't see how anyone can properly determine beforehand whether they would be willing to stick a knife into another person when push comes to shove. I'd also say that fighting with a knife is more mentally and emotionally demanding than simply stabbing (or shooting, for that matter) at a threat, which I suspect most couch potatoes would probably end up doing.

  • @StardustSpaceMonkey
    @StardustSpaceMonkey 10 років тому +2

    Unless you are dealing with at least a probable death threat I would never use knife as a self defense. It is extremely provokative thing to bring to a fight. The opponent will probably go to full attack "survival" mode instead of just giving you few blows to bring you down.

    i have one of these, an older one, about 8 years old. i bought it to have a quick stabing knife on my ops vest shoulder.
    It was not sharpened at all when i got it and the point was rubbish and bent when struck into a table.
    I think they made some modifications, as the point seems a little more rounded, there is a makers mark on the boot clip and the cord hole has a brass filling in it wich the old ones did not
    It definatly cuts better than the one i have, you might want to test the point to see if they still have the bending point problem.

    My first edc folder was a S&W M&P little knife. Unfortunately it was pretty bad steel I guess. Edge retention was horrible and would not hold one for long. My dad has sharpened knives for years and couldn't get a very good edge on it. I still have it sitting in my closet but I definitely put the money into a well made edc knife.

    There is an old tadition,
    A game we all can play.
    You start by getting liquored up
    And sharpening your blade.
    You take a shot of whiskey,
    You grab your knife and pray
    And spread apart your fingers,
    And that is what you say:
    Oh!
    I have all my fingers,
    The knife goes chop! Chop! Chop!
    If I miss the spaces in between
    My fingers will come off!
    And if I hit my fingers,
    Blood will soon come out.
    But all the same I play this game
    Cause that's what it's all about.
    No, you can't use a pencil!
    You can not use a pen!
    The only way is with a knife,
    When danger is your friend.
    And some may call it stupid,
    Some may call it dumb.
    But all the same we play this game
    Because it's so damn fun!
    Oh!
    I have all my fingers,
    The knife goes chop! Chop! Chop!
    If I miss the spaces in between
    My fingers will come off!
    And if I hit my fingers,
    The blood will soon come out.
    But all the same I play this game
    Cause that's what it's all about.
    Oh!
    Chop! Chop! Chop! Chop! Chop! Chop! Chop!
    I'm picking up the speed.
    And if I hit my fingers
    Then my hand will start to bleed!

I do a lot of outdoor work where carrying a knife just makes sense, I was wondering if there are any knives like this that wont make me look like an idiot and wont scare people. I come from the UK so I can only use a knife like this for work. What options do I have that is in a good price range, that is practical to work.

    Smith & Wesson made it for who ever wants to spend their money on it. A lot of knives are made and sold because people like them not that they plan to ever use it , because many places you can own a double edge blade but not carry them. I had one that's not double edged ,for collection purposes and it's so-so.

  • @orion8981
    @orion8981 9 років тому

    I got the single edged variant for general stabbing things. It works (against hogs, anyways, it'd probably work for people, but I don't want to find out). I carry it for self defense as well, since knives (small, single edged, and a bunch of other BS) and guns are the only things Texas says you can defend yourself with. Since I can't carry a pistol, and an AR-15 is unwieldy for anything inside of five feet, it's primary now.

    • @triggerhappytexan
      @triggerhappytexan 9 років тому

      pepper spray and batons are also legal in Texas.

    • @DShiflet01
      @DShiflet01 9 років тому

      +TriggerHappyTexan H. Actually, no, batons aren't legal. Texas law forbids the carrying of "clubs", which the law defines as "an instrument that is specially designed, made, or adapted for the purpose of inflicting bodily injury or death by striking a person with the instrument", including, but not limited to nightsticks, blackjacks, maces, or tomahawks. Since a baton is an instrument specifically designed to inflict injury by striking with it...that pretty much rules out legally carrying them.

    • @triggerhappytexan
      @triggerhappytexan 9 років тому

      +DShiflet01 Yeah I know, I actually just reread the laws again this morning. I'm not one to break the law, but if you're being searched, you deserve to be caught! But in all seriousness I don't see why night sticks are illegal. There great. Here's a little cheat though ;) You know those sharpening rods that come with knife sets? get one of those and fit it to you're knife sheath! It's a great night stick or baton! If you fit it to the sheath then you have a valid excuse to carry it! Most cops won't even take a second look if you're not being suspicious! and you can sharpen you're knife with it! If a cop does try to tell you it's illegal, just tell him you didn't know and you're SOOO very sorry and he probably will just give a warning and tell you to take it off!

    • @DShiflet01
      @DShiflet01 9 років тому

      That is a creative workaround. I too find it odd that batons are illegal, I mean, I can carry a 5 inch knife, or get a CHL and pack a .45, but carrying a baton is just too dangerous?

    • @DShiflet01
      @DShiflet01 8 років тому

      Texas actually forbids the carrying of clubs, but if you can pass the "stick" off as a walking stick or something you can maybe skirt that law.
