  • One of the old students from Unitec contacted me the other day with a problem with his old 1995 Honda Magna.
The bike had been stood around a year, in-used outside in the rain, sun & wind. The bike wouldn't start, flat battery so he fitted a new one & eventually, after putting fresh fuel in the tank he got the bike fired up, though only on one cylinder.
After a couple of weeks after collecting the bike one evening I finally had the time to take a look....
Follow me through the steps to diagnose what's wrong with this old V-twin.

Great to see you back in the workshop Andy , it's a dilemma, I would love to see the rebuild but its a big old chunk of cash . I hope your customer has a huge sentimental attachment to it and goes for the fix . Thanks for sharing your skills 👍👍

+springy 2112 I agree, I think only sentiment will get this old girl back on the road!
      Cheers for now. Andy

You might have to drain the oil catch tube on the air box. Check the air filter to see if it's soaked in oil. This remedied the stumble on a GL500 Silverwing.

+Chris Will do, just waiting for the customer to decide what to do. Thanks for watching & for your feedback. Cheers Andy

Shouldn't you have mentioned the importance of either connecting a 'plug on the free pluglead or isolating the ignition power feed to prevent "flash over" of the HT while spinning the motor for the compression test?

+wontputrealname What can I say? I live dangerously! No seriously, completely forgot to mention it in this video. Thanks for your feedback. I'll try remember next time round. Cheers Andy

Is it the microphone picking up lots of noise, or does the engine sound very rough? My initial thought was "exhaust gasket on the way out".
Here's hoping your customer gives it the thumbs up for a rebuild, look forward to seeing it diagnosed internally.
    Excellent video, thanks Andy.

+Niek Hoogendoorn yes, it's running quite rough at the moment but the fuel been stale isn't helping.
      Cheers for now. Andy

16:25 about the front cylinder, did you consider the fact that the balance pipe could actually be the cause of the smoke on the top muffler?

    • @AndyMechanic
      @AndyMechanic  7 років тому

+Alaude Yes, near the end I mentioned this I'm sure. The smoking, under high rpm seemed a little excessive given the size of the balance pipe. To be conclusive I'd take the exhausts off and run the test again.
Thanks for your feedback. Cheers for now Andy

Bro please help me, my honda magna 250cc no spark. How to trouble shoot.

Check output on pickup coil in flywheel - this provides voltage pulse to CDI unit to trigger ignition spark. Also check you have a 12v feed to the ignition coils when key is on. You'll need a multimeter to do these tests.
      Cheers Andy
