I just want to warn again bringing up the voltage in a Lipo. When the voltage gets low, the internal resistance of the cell goes up exponentially compared to how far each cell goes below 3V. It’s a 4s Lipo so the minimum safe voltage is 4x3 or 12 volts. To get a reading of 4 volts means that each cell is a little above 1 volt. You can do what you did it and it might work but there is a hidden danger. Because the internal resistance of the cells will be permanently higher, you have a greater chance of microscopic stalagmites forming in the battery. These will grow and can eventually pierce a hole between the anode and cathode cause a route for electrons to flow freely through. Basically the battery shorts internally. This can cause a thermal runaway which will cause massive amount of heat and pressure until it blows. Like a nuclear reactor meltdown. The battery will also never perform as well as it did new and since this jet is already getting telemetry voltage warnings from just taking off, meaning this battery is being pushed to the limits out of the box, there could be a bad ending. I am not telling anyone how to use a product they paid for. I just want everyone to realize what the risks are with this and choose for themselves. In no way am I trying to bash Brian. I just want to inform everyone.
Thanks for the explanation, but I never got my battery to 4 VDC (nominal), so not sure where you got that from. I was into LVC, but that's at like 3.4 VDC by default on any given cell, remember, these are SMART packs, so we DO see each cell, as well as the nominal voltage (the total of the cells), and even if one was surging, or sagging, they will be actively corrected by the BMS in the SMART chip. FWIW, I would argue that 3VDC is not the "minimum safe voltage" although you can certainly hold you packs to that level of draw down. To be honest, I'd say, 3.3 VDC would be a healthy spot to stop, but again, even with ONE cell running low (sagging), the SMART chip is going to balance that cell asap. Either way, didn't take your comments as an sort of slight, but not sure where you came up with 4VDC.
I have one. I made a pan/tilt deal to hold an FPV camera, but it was kinda heavy for this particular reach. Maybe I can use the "endoscope cam" for the next one.
It flies CRAZY fast and good - I just hope people love it as much as we did. I've honestly LOVED every viper we've ever done, from 50mm Arrows, to FMS's offerings, to now this the smallest of the HH offerings, 64mm, 70mm, 90mm - ALL best in class, and well worth any small premium in cost, compared to the PNP's the competitors are offering...but even they are really good!
Brian I just knew when you was flying at the bottom of the that's when I thought he was going to land in a tree that wouldn't have surprised me I always say a RC airplane is always looking for a tree to Land in. That's just like you said that's part of owning a RC airplane. I thought it was a good video and keep on doing what you're doing you and camera crew. PS I thought your son done an excellent job building a nose for that jet
Wow! That's the longest fishing pole I've ever seen!! That was stuck FAR higher than any airplane I've put in trees. Treed plenty of them over the years, but I've only lost one. I went back every day for 2 weeks waiting for the wind to knock it down, but I guess someone else found it before I did. I did manage to find that camera that was attached with velcro to the wing since it fell off on impact, so I have good video of the flight (and crash). I thought for sure that it would clear the tree tops on final approach..... 🤔 Now I just make sure there are no trees within a 1/4 mile of where I'm flying, or guaranteed, a tree WILL jump up and catch it! I've just got that kind of luck. Poor depth perception certainly doesn't help. 😂
LOL - yeah, and we made it longer, but never needed it, since mother nature kicked in and brought her down to the surface for us!!! We spent like 3 nights getting this one back, and then about 1 hour just spackeling it up, and my son made the nose cone, which worked pretty nice
I think it would have been awesome to see retracts. They would OWN the 64mm market, but they were trying to stay somewhat competitive. This plane already beats most other 64mm planes, based purely on specs, but it's still pretty pricey. I think the 70mm would be a perfect plane for most who want Retracts, and it's still AMAZING even today. I want to see a special retract system, like in earlier RC days where there's one or more big servos that drive the gear action...maybe a servoless retract that drives a pushrod, or some such thing...just something creative that makes them easier/cheaper/lighter, and would work in these smaller birds.
e-flite needs to take the new freewing f22 70mm and make one with all the smart tec. Now that would be a cool bnf. leave a like on this comment if you agree 🛩
Yeh agreed. It's not hard to bring out an esc that reads battery voltage reading out as a percentage. Avian lites do it and it works with any branded lipos. Voltage, Amps, rpm etc. Just wish there was an Avian lite for 8s capable 120A esc then all my planes would have it instead of the Hobbywing 120A I'm using.
Yeah, this was 100% my fault, and re-watching the footage, I still laugh at myself. I THINK this was the tree that took a few others...and the recovery efforts were kinda fun too...YES, I did fix my Stick-O-Shame, if you were curious - the yellow part that snapped off.
The Arrows 50mm Viper is also pretty nice. This one is WAY more feature packed, if it weren't immediately obvious, and the be fair, 50mm < 64mm < 70mm < 90mm ;) BUT, I like all the Vipers we've ever done. I want a UMX now ;) And What about a Carbon Z Viper 120mm ??!?!?! ;)
Except the Viper was down farther than it looked...maybe 15-20 feet down from the top. I thought about that too, if the super-duper-stick-o-shame failed me, and while it did ultimately fail, we never tried the LONGEST rendition...mother nature beat us to the chase ;)
You are unique in flying, but with all the planes you have at home, I understand your skills with RC planes and flying. I expect you are a big seller of RC planes.
Thanks, I only wish I had more time to dedicate to flying these RC planes. We might only get to fly them 2-6 times on a GOOD experience, and sometimes what you see here, filmed, is 100% of the flights we've been able to enjoy. It's the double edged sward of trying to earn enough (with my day job + UA-cam) to keep afloat, while build this crazy aerodrome that we're working our tails off for, and to have it complete while I'm still young enough to enjoy it. I work with so many guys that just work and work and work (think maintenance guys at the plants where I serve for my day job) then they just up and die, have a life altering injury, heath slips, or they just age out of the possibility of flying FULL SCALE - I'm doing everything in my power to not end up in that situation. As a result, we're working VERY hard to expedite this process, not only to show it CAN be done by a "normal" person, not ultra rich, just a working class guy, but that it can be enjoyed in the prime of life. I know this is a big vision, and some won't "get it" but that's okay, this isn't for everyone, and most would have given up by now...I'm just very VERY hard headed ;) As for the RC planes - they are a branch of my love and appreciation for aviation...but not the whole tree. It is also something I love deeply, and I'm willing to make incredible sacrifices for, and allow family to help me make said investments and effort - lucky them, right - LOL ;) Hope this makes sense. It's the tip of the iceberg, but might help you understand my situation, if it weren't already clear.
Are you getting the goofy 4-5 names randomly? That's happening on ours too, and it's a spam attack - report and block them ASAP! We see maybe 5-25 per week right now...
Nice looking plane. Just like the small 50mm Habu this plane sucks the juice out of the battery which is to bad because an EDF should be able to take you pushing it to have fun.
I agree Brian. Viper is an amazing platform. I fly the HH70 and the HSD90. I love them both and would love a 64mm. But I also agree that landing gear on a Viper is almost oxymoronic except for landing. Come on HH. This was your chance. HK has retracts on a 64mm. Thx Brian and Megan.
64mm edf aircraft can and do have retracts ..but I guess if they put them in it might effect the handlaunch option which is great - I cannot work out why e-flite decided to do another VIPER and at 64mm ? Man you need to train your trees better - here in the UK if a tree did that it would get a good old fashioned wooden spoon across its trunk ..LOL... Enjoyed the Video cheers
Wow, this is a must have for me. Thx to your advice Brian I stick, for the moment, to 4s batteries so this is the thing! >Thx again for you're great work, greetings to the camera crew. One q, at wich rate do you charge your batteriesAlso, what reciever is in this bird?
I think it would be unnecessary, but if you want CROW, you could do that too, and get it down FASSSSSSSSST........but to avoid dragging the flaps on the ground you could also shut off the delay on the Flap setup, so it's easier to pull them back in....then you can change the speed of that channel in SERVO SETUP, but only on the way DOWN.
Do you think the 4s 4000 will fit/work in this one? It looks to have enough room but not sure if CG will work out. I have a lot of 4s batteries and this will be a must have for me. Thanks Brian.
Hey @brianphillipsrc. So I am rejoining the hobby after about 15 years. I am considering the NX8+ 20 channel TX. My question to you is what would be the best receiver with a minimum of AS3x. I would like room to grow with a reciever selection as well as far as channel capacity. Thanks for your input and love y’all’s channel! Tell camera crew thank you as well!
I wouldn't even get an Rx until you pick a plane. If you want a plane as a RETURNING RC enthusiast, I'd highly suggest getting a BNF (Bind and Fly) like many of the Eflite offerings, from Horizon Hobby, which are some of the best ones you can get back into the hobby with. They will help you get your feet under you, then when you're flying again, like you used too, you can start sizing the receivers to the plane you pick. As a matter of fact, we share what Rx to use in each and every plane we do (aside from some of our really old content). This can be found my opening the Video Description, then right at the top, we share what Plane, Battery (or Batteries), Receiver (if necessary - if it's a PNP Plug and Fly, then we too would have needed a Receiver, but lots of these planes are BNF bind and fly or RTF ready to fly, so keep an eye out for that nomenclature.), and Transmitter (sounds like you already decided on the NX8+ - this is a good choice, and will do most all of what you need, unless you decide you can't live without SLIDERS, which are analog sliders behind the sticks on the back of the transmitter - I don't use them hardly EVER, fyi). I want you to know that most planes are going to be good on AR630 or AR631 which will get you AS3X+ and SAFE, if you want either of them, but if you have RETRACTS AND you want to setup a complex wing type, like FLAPPERONS/SPOILERONS, to accomplish CROW - something you rarely NEED, but might want to play with, then you might consider going with the AR8360T...this adds two more pluggable channels, but to be clear, there are more "virtual" channels up above the pluggable ones, so you can still impact mode changes, and this is why the newer Trasmitters with "+" or getting an older one and updating the Firmware to get the same 20 Channels has been such a game changer! Here's our generic list, but you want to ask for a particular PNF plane you're considering, and we can help, but we already have it listed in the Video Description for that plane, fwiw. We'd be happy to help you as you get your feet wet! Come on Brian.... you know what im going to say. You already have a 6s Avian in there. Get some 5s lipos in this thing and let he rip. Speak to CNHL and do some demos for their lipos. Amp pull is about 75A so your within the stock ESCs capabilities.
Hey Brian do you remember back in the day when you were Andrew s age, you would have been up that tree and shaking the branches like a chimpanzee to retrieve that plane 😂😂
So I'm confused. Is this a good trainer first time jet or is the Habu better. COULD YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME, ONE MORE TIME. FOR GOODNESS SAKES BRIAN!!!
Habu is WAY better. Not sure how you got that crazy idea. Must have heard some marketing guy trying to sell something - LOL ;) The Habu is 10000000%, hands down better for an EDF trainer. You could hypothetically learn to fly with the 70mm Habu STS (red one, 70mm) - seriously...it's a great, slow flying plane!
Beautiful jet man. Hey you guys think sweat bees were bothering, we got those lantern flies at our house in Pa and theres at least a dozen or more every tone we go out the front door all pver the front of our brick house. Its freaking ing disgusting.
@@xJae14x shame, that the flyfans l-39 is no 70mm. to me it seems the l-39 lacks seriously on speed . otherwise its such a cool plane. looks and sounds so good. and seems very stable.
@@martindelrio1891 I own the L-39 it’s great. Not the fastest option but a 64 on 6s it’s also no slouch. It’s tons of fun. Plenty of 70mm options, best for me is the new 70 F22. I’ve been waiting for one that size
@@xJae14x no question. its no slouch. but it would be awesome if it was a 70 and as fast as the freewing vulcan. but even if the l-39 was a 70, i doubt it would be as fast as the vulcan. the l-39 i think is the draggier airframe.
I think the Retracts would be nice too, but I guess there's just not enough capacity for that. The Flywing 64mm L-39 looks like it's closer to an 80mm airframe, so not sure why they made it a 64mm edf anyway. When they're big, they can squish more goodies in. The wings are pretty thin on the Viper, keep in mind, they're Outboard, whereas the L-39 are more inboard, like an F-16...so just kind not real-estate for the servoless retracts. I still think it'd be cool to have a proper NOSE gear, with servoless retract, then a pushrod, dual drive 30gram servo for the mains, or some such setup
Technically you CAN bind to it, but you wouldn't want to fly this plane on the DXs, you won't have enough channels to make everything work. Get an NX7e if you want to hold down the cost. It will work fine, or if you're trying to get in for the long run, get an NX8 or NX10 at minimum. You'll NEVER regret getting a good Tx. @@BrianPhillipsRC Carbon Z Viper 120mm? I just felt a twinge in me floppy.
The HH youtube ad I watched this morning did suggest 50c on the 2200mAh a d 30c on the 3200mAh.
Yeah but they had the manual - LOL - we didn't get that in our white box ;) So glad we got this beauty, but the manual was hiding back in Illinois ;)
DJI drone with a hook, easy peasy recovery!
I know this is a big vision, and some won't "get it" but that's okay, this isn't for everyone, and most would have given up by now...I'm just very VERY hard headed ;)
As for the RC planes - they are a branch of my love and appreciation for aviation...but not the whole tree. It is also something I love deeply, and I'm willing to make incredible sacrifices for, and allow family to help me make said investments and effort - lucky them, right - LOL ;)
Hope this makes sense. It's the tip of the iceberg, but might help you understand my situation, if it weren't already clear.
Hey Brian. Our comments are being weird over on our channel. Just testing. Let me know if you see this. Thanks man!
What? That's crazy. I DO see this comment, fwiw...
Are you getting the goofy 4-5 names randomly? That's happening on ours too, and it's a spam attack - report and block them ASAP! We see maybe 5-25 per week right now...
Preordered using your link.
Awesome! We hope you love it. Thanks for supporting our family!
Nice looking plane. Just like the small 50mm Habu this plane sucks the juice out of the battery which is to bad because an EDF should be able to take you pushing it to have fun.
BUT, if you use the 3200mAh 4S - you'll be WAY better off - unless you hit a tree smh ;)
@@BrianPhillipsRC I really enjoyed your crazy rescue rig :)
What HK 64mm has retracts?
64mm edf aircraft can and do have retracts ..but I guess if they put them in it might effect the handlaunch option which is great - I cannot work out why e-flite decided to do another VIPER and at 64mm ? Man you need to train your trees better - here in the UK if a tree did that it would get a good old fashioned wooden spoon across its trunk ..LOL... Enjoyed the Video cheers
FMS is so upset those nav lights aren't blinking 👍
LOL - Great one! I'll make sure to point that one out to FMS!!!
Wow, this is a must have for me. Thx to your advice Brian I stick, for the moment, to 4s batteries so this is the thing!
>Thx again for you're great work, greetings to the camera crew.
One q, at wich rate do you charge your batteriesAlso, what reciever is in this bird?
Do you think spoilarons
I think it would be unnecessary, but if you want CROW, you could do that too, and get it down FASSSSSSSSST........but to avoid dragging the flaps on the ground you could also shut off the delay on the Flap setup, so it's easier to pull them back in....then you can change the speed of that channel in SERVO SETUP, but only on the way DOWN.
I noticed that the BNF model is only $20 more than the PNP. Usually it's $30 more. Wouldn't mind if that became a common thing. 👍
yeah, that was kinda different, wasn't it!?!?!
Do you think the 4s 4000 will fit/work in this one? It looks to have enough room but not sure if CG will work out. I have a lot of 4s batteries and this will be a must have for me. Thanks Brian.
GREAT JET, What camera recorder do you use? great videoing 👍
To date, we have always just used our cell phones. We are currently using a Galaxy S21 Ultra.

@@BrianPhillipsRC advice taken, still ordered my nx8+ and a couple receivers via your link. Gotta support baby!!!! 🤙
Come on Brian.... you know what im going to say. You already have a 6s Avian in there. Get some 5s lipos in this thing and let he rip. Speak to CNHL and do some demos for their lipos. Amp pull is about 75A so your within the stock ESCs capabilities.
So you think 5S would work??? I think she already rips on 4S!!! I'm still just trying to avoid trees - LOL LOL LOL ;)
@BrianPhillipsRC without a doubt mate. 2200 5s would be perfect.
I'm betting the new 120c 2900mAh packs would be perfect in this Viper.
That's what I'm telling my wife when she sees the credit card bill, anyway 😊
120C?!?!?!? Awesome ;)
of all the places in your hanger which plane
would you most likely to have a second one
What? I don't get what you're saying
Hey Brian do you remember back in the day when you were Andrew s age, you would have been up that tree and shaking the branches like a chimpanzee to retrieve that plane 😂😂
Yeah right! I would have never had the guts, but my buddy Esteban - he's been known to climb a tree or two in recovery efforts ;) LOL
👍👍👍
thanks!
would you ever try a 3d printed plane? like the Eclipson Cobra
Must have heard some marketing guy trying to sell something - LOL ;)
The Habu is 10000000%, hands down better for an EDF trainer. You could hypothetically learn to fly with the 70mm Habu STS (red one, 70mm) - seriously...it's a great, slow flying plane!
Can you review some absolute beginner planes please
www.brianphillipsrc.com/beginnerplanes - We do, and will keep doing it more too ;)
Whats does AS3X+ actually mean in terms of benefits over AS3X?
Just the ability to edit gyro gains per axis?
Also adds hand launch assist, and nose wheel gyro. I’m not sure on all the technical upgrades tho. 😊
Active Stabilization Three Axis
Beautiful jet man. Hey you guys think sweat bees were bothering, we got those lantern flies at our house in Pa and theres at least a dozen or more every tone we go out the front door all pver the front of our brick
house. Its freaking
ing disgusting.
viper with no retracts? That’s like buying a Ferrari with cloth seats.
It should be 6s with retracts like the FlyFans L39. Such a wasted opportunity
Can my radio work this jet? I have the carbon cub spektrum DXs radio?
Technically you CAN bind to it, but you wouldn't want to fly this plane on the DXs, you won't have enough channels to make everything work.
Get an NX7e if you want to hold down the cost. It will work fine, or if you're trying to get in for the long run, get an NX8 or NX10 at minimum. You'll NEVER regret getting a good Tx.
