  • This is a structure that you will see throughout my art practice. It is just a 3D version of the triangle meshes that I use. I build them by hand in a modelling program (Blender), vertex by vertex. The vertices are distributed in the same way that they are in 2D, by a 'roughly even scattering'. It is through this somewhat arbitrary placement that I generate 'hand made' randomness and it is by this very attenuated and formalized manually generated creative activity that living presence and all the aspects of it such as habit, personality, aesthetic preference, mood, character, and so on, are able to assert themselves in the artwork.
This piece is similar to many of my other art projects (such as cubes: robgillthings.... ) as it is the development of an open-ended structure. Using a simple generative formula, in this case, 'a roughly even scattering', I can continue to add to the structure indefinitely. What you see here is a snapshot of its state at the time of this writing (November 19, 2023). I will continue to add more and will be creating new videos as the structure continues to grow.
There are four different approaches that I use to generate computer animation. I started with Processing which is Java based (see: • NB ). I have now moved on to OpenFrameworks which is based on C++ (see: • Custom Catastrophe ), and I also use three.js (see: • EHB2 ) to write the online Javascript apps that you will find on my website (robgillthings.... ). The fourth approach to generating 3D computer animations is using a 3D modelling program, Blender, which I am just getting familiar with in a serious way now. So you will see more Blender videos like this one as I explore, experiment, and learn this amazing software, which, by the way, is open source and *completely free*. I am amazed that this software is available. It costs anywhere from $5000 to $10000+ to buy comparable commercial programs such as Maya and 3dsMax and it works very very well. It is a huge program and you can produce professional work with it. There is so much it is capable of. It does have a fairly steep learning curve but, as you can see above, I am on my way (but wow, is there a lot to learn!). I cannot tell you just how excited I am to have a chance to be able to use these tools to produce 3D computer animations (many of them interactive).
The audio, with the same name as this video, can be found on my mini album, 'stuff with other stuff' released on this day as well (November 19, 2023):
