  • I started off hoping to give this grinder a quick clean up in order to use it for the big CAT diesel.
Ended up completely disassembling the unit.
The build quality is very impressive and after seeing the level of engineering in it's design I am glad I did a complete tear down.

I have a Kwik Way valve grinding machine from the 60s. Just drug it out from the shed and got it all freed up and working again. It put a nice finish on the 16 valves I needed to grind.

I have the same unit and it works fantastic
    A few suggestions
    1. A standard v rib washing machine drive belt fits it perfectly although narrow.
    2. Use a 4 inch fiber hand grinder disc and you will get a fantastic finish because the disc acts like a vibration dampener and eliminates the ringing of a stone.
    3. An old style electrical fuse cap will fit the oil tubes.
    4. Always start the machine and advance the valve onto the stone and keep the valve in contact with the stone until finished grinding then back the valve away from the
Stone. Using a 4 inch grinder disc also cools the valve.

I have one that belonged to my grandpa. No real use to me. It is running condition if you are or know someone who would be interested in. Have no idea where to market it.

Also want to add that one of my gib screws was unlike the others much like you had found. I suspect the manufacturer did it.

good to see old machines still working and being taken care of. I have a black n decker super service (made by van norman) when i got it it was so covered in dirt and crud you couldn't tell it was red or what it really was. it's saved a lot of old valves and will continue to work as long as i can keep it going. Love to see this big old girl in action when your done

This machine is in very very good shape it's from the mid 40s though not the 20s I can tell by that motor and by some of the features on the machine

You have a solid foundation for precision work. Please do some run-out tests/checks with a 1/10's test indicator to confirm precise tolerances for valve regrinds. Thank you so much for saving an old machine from the scrap yard. Many useful and productive years in it yet. Subscribed.

Thanks for taking us through this one, Mike. It's a cool looking "heirloom" machine made to last as long as someone is willing to take care of it, and now we know why.

As you have found out these are well built machines. I rebuilt one a couple of years ago and have used it on numerous engine rebuilds. Some one else pointed out the weak spot as being the ball chuck. He is correct in that. I manged to make one good chuck out of the parts from two machines. Some people have replaced the ball chucks with a collett system like ER collets. Anything that an reliably and repeatedly grab the valve stems in a concentric manner with the spindle will work fine. The collet type depends on the range of valve stem sizes you expect to regrind. Looking forward to part 2.

Can you tell me how you removed the driven gear assemble that is held in place with the wedge. I removed the wedge bolt but feel like I need a slide hammer to pull on the assembly. I have the same machine

Assuming those are oilite bushings your best bet is to soak them in 30wt overnight to reimpregnate them. After that they shouldnt need relubrication for a good long while.

It was the time of the Great Depression and the following years of civil infrastructures building. There was the dams, bridges and waterworks projects, Hoover, Grand Coolie, California waterworks, the national roadworks etc. All these called for a great demand for machines, and most machines were powered by engines which needed service machines such as this valve grinder.

I would call the part that holds the valve the workhead.

The leather belt will need occasional treatment with neat's foot oil(comes from cow). Period publications also recommend a little castor oil as well, although I am unsure as to why. With a low load belt like that, will only need rarely, but will be more supple once treated.

Wow!!! A machine that was built when companies were still concerned about preserving their "reputation". It would be interesting to compare how "modern day" engineers have shortcut and de-engineered the "durability" and level of precision built into this machine both in its design and manufacture in a effort to increase the profit margin and future sales.

what size are the valve stems in your cat heads.. do you have a kwikway valve Seat grinder. i.imgur.com/y3b5h5Y.jpg that is a real mounted industrial diamond..hold it up and it might still sparkle in the sun.. but it had too much to make a jem stone.
i changed the flat cotton belt on my early sioux to a micro v .. i.imgur.com/y3b5h5Y.jpg i.imgur.com/9Ppo5Kq.jpg my sioux seat grinder set.. i.imgur.com/II0WPMZ.jpg i.imgur.com/iUPzttg.jpg mine is so old it still uses hex drive instead of spline drive.. i.imgur.com/eSfpkKR.jpg it did come with flat head ford pilots and dodge pilots.. i.imgur.com/75s2lOM.jpg and this neat thing for cleaning carbon out of flat head ford valve guides and seats.. i.imgur.com/NHe45FD.jpg

Pulley bushings look like "oilite" bronze.. If they are, they hold a supply of oil as they are porous...If you lube them, as with most small motor bearings, you should use a light oil such as turbine oil in the "Zoomspout" oilers available at most good hardware stores or refrigeration supply houses... Many good small motors have been ruined by engine oil as engine oil tends to "gum" when used for this purpose....

Please put a brand new valve out of a box into the chuck/collet and turn the spindle by hand with a dial indicator on the valve face to check the run out. .000 to .003 is acceptable anything beyond that it's just a neat antique machine to look at . Goodson tools lists 2 different sizes of chuck balls in there catalog. Worn chuck balls affect run out. Great video and a neat machine ! As an engine machinist it's always cool to see old machines in operation!

+Andrew Evans For what it's worth, I've watched him use this machine before, so it's not something that he just picked up. I'm sure he would have noticed an issue in the past.
