Hello Jason. Just a couple of things from a 70 year old who got sober at 24. First, the saying that “people who are not alcoholics do not wonder if they might be an alcoholic.” Second, what has worked for me for 45 years, 7 months, 20 days is that the only thing I need to do is not drink (or use) TODAY. So I never think in terms of “I’ll have been sober for x period of time when date y rolls around.” If someone had told me on May 6, 1979 that I wouldn’t drink or use for over 45 years, I’d have run screaming. So, I just don’t drink today. All that said, I’m glad for your 360 days!
2 years today for me. I haven't announced it to the world like I did at 1 year sober . It's just gone from my life now. I never thought I could ever stop drinking , but days became weeks, months, and now years . I just can't go back to the brain fog, the dehydration, and the short temper. After 2 years, this is now the new normal. It can be done even if you think you never ever will be able to stop. You will. The desire just gets less and less until you never think about it. Good luck to those about to embark on a period of sobriety.
Congratulations! 5 and a half years sober. It was actually starting CrossFit, and going to Saturday morning team WODs with a stinking hangover at 40 years old that pushed me to stop drinking. Best decision I ever made.
Way to go! And thanks for sharing. Who knew. I just celebrated 8.5 years sober on Solstice. Now I'm busting my ass to get in better shape, at 60, which is how I found your channel. I had to address prediabetic blood sugar last Feb. I quit sugar in August and then just walked away from a lifetime Chew habit a month later because it just didn't make sense anymore. I've reversed the blood sugar, now I'm getting buff at 60. I would never go back. CONGRATS ON A YEAR!! That's huge. You are an inspiration. Thanks for being real. We underestimate what we are capable of.
Thanks for sharing this Jason. Well done! I'm 45 and have been struggling with daily drinking for about 20 years. I tried a do a full year sober in 2024 but only made it about 6.5 months. It was a big win for me though. I finally got the consistency I was looking for in the gym and got to see what I could do without feeling groggy or hung over every day. I am going to go for a full year sober in 2025 to regain momentum. I want it even more than last year. I've been a fan of yours for a while and I didn't know you were going through this, it's truly inspiring to hear your story. Keep going and thanks again for putting this out there for us!
Congrats jason im currently 9.5 months sober and looking forward to celebrating my 1 year in march of 2025. everyday has been a struggle just because of my mental health issues in the past I hide them behind a bottle or a can, but I think about how far I've come since getting sober doing a crossfit competition, spartan race, soon a half marathon and more to come. Thnaks for sharing as I've watched you for a couple years and never knew until this video. I've had to come to realization that I'm also a alcholic but it also puts into purpose of what I've done before and the new things that i am doing now.!!!
I spent 27 years as a high functioning business owner, competitive athlete and inspirational figure to many... We are unique, and just like everyone else. One day at a time, just making the next right decision. Welcome to the authentic you my friend! To A long healthy happy future!
Thanks for sharing. I drank wine for years. Just went sober recently. Me and you talked and I remember you shared that you drinking daily, it was a surprise. Proud of and thanks for sharing
Jason, this video will probably help more people than any of your other videos you've posted this year. While I have never struggled with alcohol, we all have our own battles we fight. I have learned the value of bringing things to the surface and exposing them to the light: sin and deadly habits fester in the dark. Proud of you!
I will be celebrating 12 years with you on that day. Thank you for your openness. The more people hear our stories the more hope we share. Thank you for sharing. You freaking rock!! Proud of you.
Thank you for sharing and being vulnerable. I'm 7 months sober myself. I share very similar experiences with alcohol, and I just decided it doesn't work for me anymore at 53. I can't have one or only on special occasions because every weekend is special. It really impacted my training and recovery as well. I'm not at your level, but as a master's athlete, I must do whatever I can to improve. Alcohol was counterproductive.
Wow congratulations man, thank you for sharing and I’m so proud of you. I stopped drinking for a none CrossFit comp one year and have never had a drink since. 3 months lead to 6 months to 1 year to 3 years then 5 years to 10 now 15 years. Each milestone was a goal for me. The best thing in quitting was not for me, but for my children growing up in an alcohol free home.
Thx for sharing! I am coming up on a year sober too. Drank every night several beers. Sometimes more than others but I craved it. Biggest benefit for me is that sleep quality. Before I would have to get up in middle of night to use the bathroom and never had the deep deep sleep. Ever since cutting out alcohol I get those deep 8 hours of undisturbed sleep. That alone motivates me from ever going back. Blood pressure much better too in addition to other markers
Same boat, again… lol. Quit dipping a couple years ago. Started CF this January but still have 4 drinks every night to go to sleep. Made it a year working out. Guess I’m going to make it a year of no alcohol. Woo hoo! Momentum is a great confidence builder
Jason - I am 2.5 years in and it’s the best decision I have ever made. I still notice moments are different than others were before. I am always here my man and you have my number.
Congrats Jason ! I really admire your honesty talking about this as many people are in the same boat including me . I have reduced it though to only to weekends but still I am tempted to drink on every occasion . CrossFit is keeping me in a good condition though . Been doing it for 8 years now . Hope I find the strength and the will to stop drinking in the future . Thank you
I did the exact same thing stopped for a year. Love your honesty as I too didn't feel physically any better which really surprised me. I enjoyed a year off but in all honesty alcohol is a social lubricant and no matter what anyone says parties and social gatherings just aren't the same. Your just not in that zone. I went back to having a drink and don't regret it one bit. Kinda interesting that you won crossfit games drinking and not drinking
Thank you for sharing, Jason! I'm almost 62 and have cut my drinking dramatically the last few years. I had no idea the effect it was having on my sleep. I, too, enjoy an Athletic brew from time to time! They are the best NA beer IMO 😊
Hi Jason…Well Done on your near one year of sobriety…I am just 10 days shy of hitting 500 days sober…me too on the “just several glasses of wine”…for years and years and years (I will be 67 in 2 months)…You should be SO PROUD I am! Keep up the amazing work!
Congratulations man! I enjoy having craft beer and wine but if I was being honest, the time of COVID didn't do me or my wife any favors. I'd say it's been a worse habit since . I have goals this year. Hopefully I can start new good habits in place of the old ones. Thanks for sharing
Thanks so much for being so honest!!!! being this vulnerable makes me want to follow u even more!! Keep doing wht ur doing. u dont feel much of a difference but ur kids will notice a difference & tht is wht is soo important at this time in ur life!! u got this!! 😊❤
thanks for sharing your story Jason, gutsy. Over the last year I have changed my relationship with alcohol. Once I understood the impact on sleep, recovery, resting heart rate, and energy for training, it was a lot easier. Simply put, at 66, I can't train and drink, even one or two drinks will have an impact. When I first got into CrossFit I watched some videos with Gord MacKinnon, a CF masters OG, and remember him saying "alcohol is not helping me reach my goals". That said it all for me.
Wow!! I'm truly amazed by this video and you're so brave to come clean. It sent shivers down my spine as I can totally relate 100% to everything you said - and I truly mean 100%. I especially recognize the insight when it comes to daily performance. I mean, I can have 2-3 units in the evening and perform at my top level the day after. That’s fantastic Jason! Congratulations! I’m also not a drinker anymore, after nearly two decades in the navy, I had to stop or die young! Now let’s talk about that HRV for a second. I struggle to get over 50 myself. What are some other things that you’ve found help it?
Thank you for sharing - I 1000000% relate to your situation. I appreciate your honesty and bringing a topic to light that often times gets overlooked. Happy New AND One Year to you.
It’s a good thing that you don’t notice the difference… because the liver will compensate and clear the body of toxins for so long, while taking little hits each time (damage) until eventually the damage is too much and then the liver starts to decompensate (fail) that’s when you feel shit and ill and everything goes wrong. By the time you start to feel ill the damage has already been done and it’s too late. You’re smart to know that while you may not feel the benefit …. Your body is thanking you and is in a happier state for it. And the objective recovery speaks for itself because the body is no longer having to deal with that toxin. I’m not a daily drinker , but if there was a party I’d easily drink way too many drinks in one evening (binge drinking) and while not a regular occurrence, that much alcohol in one sitting is toxic. It’s almost like this post came to me at the right time … as I went to a party last night and only had one drink, I had to go home earlier because my daughter wasn’t well. As I looked around at everyone with their glazed over eyes, excessively loud voices …. I realised I’m not missing out on anything Thank you for sharing. All the best with your life long streak 😊
Thank you. I especially like that you point out how you were using the alcohol to help with anxiety., "the sedation that came with it." You are definitely not alone in that aspect. I hope you can take some steps to better understand where the anxiety came from in the first place. As a mental health professional and Crossfit coach, I am always advocating that we understand ourselves better so that we can make more intentional decisions. Crossfit gives us a great opportunity to get to know ourselves. You have mastered your physical self. And is sounds like you have a good start to mastering your mental self. Keep it up!
Hey Jason, Thanks for sharing. I’ve followed you for a while as our stories are similar and you have inspired me so much since I started CrossFit 3 years ago. 4 years sober for me and ironically it took getting fit to realise that I had an issue as I would calculate how much I could have each night without compromising training, and although I was drinking low carb low alc drinks I also could not take a day off. So after months and months of thought and final acknowledgment that I had an issue I stopped and it’s the best thing I ever did! Keep going champion!
Very cool ,thanks for sharing Jason. I remember meeting you a few days into Jan last year in our Men and Women of discomfort group. Sounds like the no drinking for the 90 days of that program was just the kickoff to your sober journey. Great work brother!
Jason, if being sober makes you happy then that's all that matters, and I'm happy for you. Have a Happy New Year, best wishes to you in the next one, rock on champ ^^
I can relate bud. It's hard to face demons as we age. I wish I had faced them when I was younger. I have a security blanket I'm working on getting rid of similarly
Your heart and your liver thank you!! Thanks for sharing and you should be proud of yourself. Hoping this story will open eyes for people who are in a similar situation, but unaware! Keep posting if it will help you be accountable. Look forward to hearing from you in the future!
Huge respect, honestly you have done brilliantly. I am a social drinker and love exercise. Wish I could do what you have done 👍🏼👍🏼 All the best from the UK
Interesting video, and congratulations. Can relate to many aspects of this..Alcohol can easily become habitual in seemingly small quantities. And in that way it can get you. Great to hear your story.
Awesome. The first thing that came to my mind was you won 4 CrossFit championships while drinking. But my philosophy on any alcohol is that it’s a poison inside the body. So excellent job and thanks for sharing ❤
"Mens Sana in corpore sano" ,strong mind in a strong body. You got annoyed because you were forced to realize you had a problem. You have built your body and pushed through pain to make your body strong, but your mind needed to break that habit, and you have done so. No greater feeling.
How do you feel about the whoop to apple watch switch? Would be cool to see a video comparison of features you use for fitness. I used a whoop for 8 months a couple years ago. It usually said i was getting 4+ of rem and deep sleep with no indication of issues (other than erratic recovery percentage), but i fell asleep at the wheel and hit a bus, so my doctor had me do a sleep study. Turned out i had sleep apnea and wasn't even breathing for a good portion of the night, so i resentfully stopped using the whoop. My habits are pretty trash right now, and i feel like i need some objective accountability. I've been thinking I'd try a whoop again, but still have bug reservations about the data accuracy of any of those wearables.
I actually have a video on why I dropped the whoop for the apple watch :-) Ya gotta take wearables with a grain of sand and look for bigger trends (vs daily)
Thanks for sharing. I don’t have an additive personality so I can’t relate. I do have anxiety, which I’ve heard you mention. How do you cope with that?
I have to say that after re watching this video 4-5 times I don’t think you sound like an alcoholic. If you wanna be the champ 5x then yeah don’t drink.
Maybe I'm not... but my ability to slip into a habit, whether it be drinking wine every night and worry about being out of wine (in the middle of the day), or having bowl of ice cream every night... It's likely better for me to avoid things that would turn into a bad habit. ha ha.
Congrats! Agree on the Guinness - it’s delicious… but keep in mind it’s not no alcohol. It’s low alcohol (0.05%). Matters to those trying to be completely alcohol free.
Congratulations and welcome to your freedom. That particular demon will try to re-surface as a desire for ‘harmless’ things like ‘just a little trt’ for ‘health’ or some other BS. Be natty. Be fully free. That is truly strong.
That is incredible! I live in italy and i love wine that motivates me to continue drinking few glasses per week knowing that will not affect training very much 😂❤🎉
I stopped drinking during the wee. that made a huge difference. I know it's the trendy thing now to not drink but giving up 100% on the socializing that comes along with drinks causes more damage than alcohol. Moderation is a practice that has real results

Thank you for sharing, Jason! I'm almost 62 and have cut my drinking dramatically the last few years. I had no idea the effect it was having on my sleep. I, too, enjoy an Athletic brew from time to time! They are the best NA beer IMO 😊
The best. glad they exist.

For HRV... cold plunge in the morning. Sauna 3-4 times a week (big difference maker). Sun in the morning whenever possible.
@ yes! I definitely need to get a sauna. Cold shouldn’t be hard, I live in Canada! I just need to go outside these days. lol

Great video. Thanks for sharing. Your mind and body knows when to quit. The brain knows. Congratulations.. cheers to continued successs
Thank you!!
I can relate bud. It's hard to face demons as we age. I wish I had faced them when I was younger. I have a security blanket I'm working on getting rid of similarly
The security blankets are real... and they're hard to shed. Keep fighting bro
Congratulations! Thanks for sharing. We all have something we struggle with... But we shouldn't struggle alone......
Yes we do
Your heart and your liver thank you!! Thanks for sharing and you should be proud of yourself. Hoping this story will open eyes for people who are in a similar situation, but unaware! Keep posting if it will help you be accountable. Look forward to hearing from you in the future!
yeah - the engine is running much better without being dragged down on a daily basis.
Good job! Thanks for sharing your story!
For sure.
Congrats man!
Thanks Jordan.
Huge respect, honestly you have done brilliantly. I am a social drinker and love exercise. Wish I could do what you have done 👍🏼👍🏼 All the best from the UK
Thanks Matt.
Thank you Jason
You're welcome.
Proud of you!
TY
Congrats!!! 👏 👏
thanks Josh.
Interesting video, and congratulations.
Can relate to many aspects of this..Alcohol can easily become habitual in seemingly small quantities. And in that way it can get you.
Great to hear your story.
Glad to share.
Way to go! Well done!!! 🎉
Thank you!
Brave of you to share. I guarantee your liver feels better, even you haven't noticed much different. Congrats and keep kicking ass.
I'm sure my liver and blood work is much happier.
Pretty damn proud of you too my man. 💪
Thank you!
Thanks Sharing Jason.
You bet
Congrats dude!! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Adam.
Keep it up buddy! You can do it! 💪🏼 ❤️
Will do.
Awesome. The first thing that came to my mind was you won 4 CrossFit championships while drinking. But my philosophy on any alcohol is that it’s a poison inside the body. So excellent job and thanks for sharing ❤
I sure did. Crazy.
So happy for you. You might want to check out an AA meeting in your area. Its great to recover your mind as well.
Thanks Pam!!!
1132 days for me ❤.
Amazing!!
"Mens Sana in corpore sano" ,strong mind in a strong body. You got annoyed because you were forced to realize you had a problem. You have built your body and pushed through pain to make your body strong, but your mind needed to break that habit, and you have done so. No greater feeling.
Love that!!!
I'm also a guy that likes streaks :). On January 1st I'll be 5 years sober
Let's gooooo!!!
I actually have a video on why I dropped the whoop for the apple watch :-)
Ya gotta take wearables with a grain of sand and look for bigger trends (vs daily)
@JasonGrubb thanks, I'll check it out!
Thanks for sharing. I don’t have an additive personality so I can’t relate. I do have anxiety, which I’ve heard you mention. How do you cope with that?
Anxiety is a fun one... I definitely work on that too... for me, movement/exercise helps keep that demon at bay.
Dude, why no discount codes for some Beaujolais.. ))
Wish I knew what that was!
This March 4 years…I now like myself
4 years! I like me too a bit more now.
Magic I am 11 year sober
Unfit as fuck mind you but 2025 is the fittest year for me 👍💪🥊
11 years sober! Congrats!
And I bet stopping dipping was hardest.
It sucked.
I bet.
❤
Ty
Totally see that. And understand.
Congratulations and welcome to your freedom. That particular demon will try to re-surface as a desire for ‘harmless’ things like ‘just a little trt’ for ‘health’ or some other BS. Be natty. Be fully free. That is truly strong.
Oh for sure, I will.
Did you win games drinking 1 bottle of wine every evening? 😮
Yes... but drank only a glass or two during competition weeks. Crazy. They were literally part of my daily caloric intake.
That is incredible! I live in italy and i love wine that motivates me to continue drinking few glasses per week knowing that will not affect training very much 😂❤🎉
Congratulations. 2225 days alcohol and tobacco/nicotine free.
2225 days!!!
I stopped drinking during the wee. that made a huge difference. I know it's the trendy thing now to not drink but giving up 100% on the socializing that comes along with drinks causes more damage than alcohol.
Moderation is a practice that has real results
Nice work!
