@irishgrl - You know, many of us here at Y’s Guys are old-school guys who really, really love Larry (like you). So, thanks for your comment. There’s room in life to love both Larry and Danny. 🙂
I remember when Red lured Danny away from the Toronto Blue Jays where he was going to start at shortstop. Red also drafted Larry in his junior year which teams can’t do anymore. Red was the architect.
Look up Ainge's 3 sport dominance in high school, he was a great athlete. I think Bird said that he was the best athlete he every played with after Danny crushed him in golf.
We talked quite a bit about his golf game when he was in studio. Yes, he’s good. Did you see the clip where he talked about Steph Curry’s golf game? ua-cam.com/video/4ssB1jF_niE/v-deo.html

I played pickup ball with Danny at BYU the summers he would come back from Boston..Also Fred Roberts, Greg Kite, and Michael Smith!! Best hoops EVER for THIS JC player! 👍👍❤️
I had a friend that played in some pick-up games I wanna say at BU with Greg Kite and he said Greg was draining, 20, 25 foot jumpers at a pretty good rate, sounds funny because he played center and was basically the Celtics 12th man and he was always called for the lamest fouls by the refs, I remember he was just checking into the game and the ref blew his whistle and called a foul on Kite for not checking in fast enough, LoL!
Ainge did not get his recognition and show his potential because he was on a great team. He was not allowed to handle the ball and shoot to show his potential. Even at the guard position, they let Dennis Johnson control the play. I think what hurt Ainge is he wasn't willing to be a playmaker like, for example, Stockton. Ainge got the ball so rarely, he wanted to showcase his skills by trying to score.
Thanks, Jeff, for chiming in with a comment. I was also a big Larry fan. One of the funny things about Larry was that he really didn’t look like the amazing player he was! I was always kinda fascinated by that. Just like a normal looking dude with crazy skills.

@Jason Skinner I think Bird made them ALL better players!!! Watch the entry passes into McHale...ALWAYS had him in PERFECT position for the easier buckets!! And Chief even said..Larry probably got him 5k of his points from his assists...
I remember Connor Henry. They'd put him in late in the game when Celtics had the game won. He'd come off the bench hit a three in the crowd go crazy. 🤦

LB was always listed at 6' 8 or 9". When shooting a Converse commercial to set up shots they had a 6'8" stand in for LB for blocking and set up. When LB shows up they had to recalibrate all the lighting, backdrops, camera angles, etc. Turned out LB was 6' 10". When asked he said in typical Bird fashion, "If I was 6' 10' they'dah made play the 4. I don't wanna play the 4." lol
Yeah Bird and Magic Johnson were both listed at 6'9" but in almost every photo you see of the two together Bird is noticeably taller. Johnson probably like 6'8" and Bird closer to 6'10" like you said.
@@CapAnson12345 Totally agree, Magic was well under 6'9", Bird was well over. Maybe the media built that rivalry by forcing the similarities to that point: same physique, same skills to induce more in the differences that create expectations (and audience): different personality, different style, different team, different color, etc. With the perspective of time I think it is correct to say that Larry was clearly a better player and Magic a more popular player. why i say this? because if they had swapped teams when they came into the league, probably the story would have been very different.
My dad still has his “I HATE DANNY AINGE” t-shirt from the 1980’s and not because he didn’t like Ainge, but because my dad is the biggest Celtics fan ever. He said nothing made him happier than opposing fans hating on Danny and then watching him play a great game.
Important thing to remember is behind the stats. Ainge shooting 50 percent from the pindown on a midrange jumper isn't as good as a hookshot for McHale, but it's good enough for him to not be left open which means that hook shot is not out of a double team. And that's basketball. You don't need to shoot as well as the stars. You just need to shoot well enough to be the second option on the kick out. And that's how basketball should be played and the best teams (Denver, Milwaukee, etc.) still play that way. Try for the highest percentage shot first. IF the defense collapses, get threes at a lower percentage, but still high enough to warrant taking the shot.
Wow, A, you have a great take on inside strategy. Very cool to read your take. Thanks for supporting the show and for taking your valuable time to contribute! We appreciate it.
Basketball is a team game. There is even a letter T in basketball. Players like Bird and Isiah Thomas were great team leaders. They got the most out of their teams. So, when talking about the GOAT being a great team player is the most important consideration. This leaves out players like Wilt and Jordan, but includes players like Magic and Bird.
I loved Danny's skill and grit as a lifelong Bostonian watching the Celts in the 80s. But I have to say I had sisters who thought Danny was an annoying whiner. One called him "ice cream face", meaning a little kid's pout when he doesn't get an ice cream. It never bothered the guys, but some women had that reaction.😂😂😂😂 I saw a similar reaction with Patriots QB Drew Bledsoe. Both terrific guys, but brought that out in some women during the heat of competitive battle.
I always feel like Danny Ainge would probably be a pretty good neighbor. But he would also be that guy you played against that one time in a pickup game that you hated intensely for the rest of your life.
Who would have thought both Danny Ainge and one of Jordan's teammates(Scott Burrell) could do something Michael couldn't, get drafted by Major League Baseball.
Danny has turned the Jazz into a powerhouse at the expense of the Cavaliers. He really used his celebrity status to get the best of Altman. The Cavs have given the Jazz - Markkanen, Agjabi, Clarkson, Sexton and a 1st round pick, and received Mitchell. Btw - Danny’s coming back for more.

Bird's career field goal average was .497. Ainge's career field goal % was .469 I just love it when former players embellish stats to make themselves and their teammates look better. That's why they keep stats so guys like this can't lie about their playing days and get away with it.
That conversation Ainge had with someone wasn't a career-long conversation, and Bird had multiple seasons where he did shoot over 50%. In all likelihood, they were also discussing certain court positions. For example, someone might have a FG% of ~52%, but that could be split between deep 2s at ~45% and ~60% near the paint. I'm 100% certain Ainge was not trying to upset you by having this conversation. P.S. Since McHale was also mentioned, he did in fact have multiple seasons with over 60% FG%. Probably shot closer 2s more often than Bird. That's just how the game works.
