Alamo Bowl Breakdown: Can BYU Overcome Colorado and Secure a Pivotal Bowl Victory?
In this detailed segment of this past week’s Y’s Guys livestream, hosts Dave McCann and Blaine Fowler delve into the pivotal Alamo Bowl matchup between BYU and Colorado, offering comprehensive analysis and insights into the stakes for both teams.
The discussion centers on BYU’s defensive excellence, having finished the season as the Big 12’s top-ranked defense in total yardage and scoring, and how it will be tested against Colorado’s elite offense, led by Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter and standout quarterback Shedeur Sanders. The panel emphasizes the importance of BYU’s defensive strategy, particularly their ability to contain Colorado’s potent receiving corps and limit explosive plays.
Offensively, Dave and Blaine underscore BYU’s need to establish a strong run game, setting a benchmark of 150 rushing yards to control time of possession and open up opportunities for big plays downfield. They highlight the critical role of quarterback Jake Retzlaff, discussing how his dual-threat capabilities can be a game-changer, provided he’s fully healthy. The conversation also explores BYU’s challenges in the red zone and the necessity of converting scoring opportunities into touchdowns, a factor they identify as essential for victory.
Dave and Blaine reflect on the broader implications of the Alamo Bowl for BYU’s program. They argue that a win against a high-profile opponent like Colorado could solidify BYU’s position in the Big 12 and build significant momentum heading into the next season. Additionally, they touch on the importance of maintaining consistency in recruiting and leveraging the national spotlight of the game to attract talent, both through traditional channels and the transfer portal.
Throughout the segment, Y’s Guys provides in-depth and engaging analysis that captures the excitement and significance of this bowl game, offering fans a comprehensive understanding of what’s at stake for BYU and how the team can achieve success.

Thanks for sharing such valuable information! Just a quick off-topic question: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). Could you explain how to move them to Binance?
My biggest concern is Colorado’s strengths line up pretty perfectly with our weaknesses. But it doesn’t exactly line up the other way. For example: Shedeur is elite against a single high shell, whether its cover 1 or 3. BYU runs mostly single high. On the other side, Retzlaff struggles most against pressure, and Colorado likes to bring a lot of heat.
Score prediction, R U Nuts ? Colorado 49 BYU 9
BYU Alamo Bowl gameplan should be imo... Offense - Run more than pass - Mix in two back sets w/ Martin AND Ropati - We've even seen three back sets with Martin, Ropati and Moa this year... Mix those in too - Allow Retlaff to use his legs too and run - In the passing game LOTS of quick reads/passes. The type of stuff they did in the second half against ASU. - Get Keelan Marion in space... Screens, end arounds, etc... he should touch the ball quite a bit in this one against Colorados man coverage. - Move the pocket to reduce pressure. Let Retzlaff move and throw. Defense - Largely the same gameplan as all year. Limit big offensive plays. Keep everything in front. Make them execute play after play. - be prepared for Colorado to change pace... Huddle, no huddle - Supreme discipline in the secondary. No breakdowns allowing deep shots. - I'd send Glasker as a blitzer more on obvious passing downs.
Is Tausili a good get for BYU? He won state for Cougars alongside Mason Anderson with Skyridge.
Cougs win big! Buffs defense is weak.
Hunter was really, really good two years ago. After a mission……..we will see.
Great interview with Jeff! He is wonderful!
Merry Christmas everyone!
These comments? BYU fans suck!
They ask people to say where they're from. Also, many watch after live broadcasts.
On the question raised, the answer is we can, just not with ARod. I feel bad for Chase. ARod wants this 50-50 (or maybe it's Kalani's philosophy) run/pass ratio and it stinks. Chase will make a great play and he won't see the ball again until two series later. It's not BYU, we can't compete like that... we were just doggone lucky this year... exactly like 2012.
Can BYU Overcome Colorado and Secure a Pivotal Bowl Victory? Nope...
Byu don’t enough fire power to keep up Colorado especially Jimmy horn coming back. Byu haven’t this kinda offense in the big 12
I've heard that about BYU vs SMU, KU, KSU, OSU lol. All BYU did was win those games. Alamo bowl should be a tight game.
It just dawned on me that Blaine sounds just like Bob Odenkirk actor that plays Better Call Saul. Great show guys!
Not a BYU fan but I just want BYU to beat that other Utah school in 2025. Go Cougars!!!
Losers chear for losers. Birds of a feather flock together.
I don’t know where a KFC is here in Illinois. Most of them have closed.
Go Cougs! Beat the buffs!
High five ✋🏼 Brandon
Then…. They Tanked🙄🙄🙄
Thanks for commenting, Dan.
As a long time track fan, that was such an amazing race to watch. Even my adult children, who aren't big track fans, watched it multiple times. And then to watch his performances since (including his silver medal run) has been incredible. I was a Henry Marsh fan in my youth, and now as a grandfather, I am a Kenneth Rooks fan!
Thanks for your comment, Cary.
Nice move to give some visibility to support one who has had such devotion to the University.
How about getting rid of conference championship games and expanding the college football playoff field ?
Thank you for sharing. Good to hear about good people doing good things
Thanks for your comment.
High five ✋🏼. Signed with byu
BYU always attracts such a loyal following of fans in the stands, drawing far better numbers than so many other NCAA teams!! I certainly hope that fact is considered at selection time!!
Good point. Thanks.
Agree with EVERYTHING Austin Said!!!
Thanks, dude, for chiming in.
1996 (Tim McTyer, Omarr Morgan, Chris Ellison & Eddie Sampson) would like a word with Austin Collie about best defensive backfield ever.
Big 12 is being very disrespected in the rankings. Disappointing. Will only get one team in where the other power 4 will get multiple teams. You can argue BYU has one of the better wins with the SMU victory.
Point well taken, Nathan. Thanks for commenting.
The Alamo Bowl may have the highest pay out of the options but boy do I hate the projected opponents for BYU. BYU shouldn't want to play Colorado AT ALL. It's a no-win situation. If you win the game the false narrative that the Big 12 sucks still exists and "BYU just beat a Big 12 team who cares". And if you lose... "see BYU was overrated". Colorado shouldn't want that for the same exact reasons. The Big 12 shouldn't want it. Washington St isn't a fun option. If the choice is there between... Alamo Bowl for 8.25 mill vs Colorado/Washington St Or Pop Tarts Bowl for 6 mill vs Miami/Clemson Gimme the Pop Tarts Bowl.
Great points, @jkh2180. Thanks.
BYU /Colo does nothing for big 12 respect. Both teams need games against those non CFP 9-3 teams and then beat them.
You are not alone in that opinion.
10-2 is a great achievement considering the way BYU was projected. Anyway, it doesn’t matter who we play in a bowl game. They made it.
Well said, Scott.
This is the problem with NIL! College football is no different than the NFL now…. Not too mention you’re already getting that college degree for free! Must be nice…
Thanks for your comment, Joshua.
Are you kidding? Getting College Players who put their health at risk Every Time they play a game for just a change at making it to the NFL to get Payed many of the great players never made it, never getting Paid, having Health problems for the Rest of their lives (Luke Staley!!!!!!) At least NOW they can make Life Changing Money in College instead of ALL the Money Going To The Colleges, Conferences, Tv, bowls, and NCAA!!!! Best Thing To HAPPEN TO COLLEGE ATHLETES PERIOD!!!!

From Wisconsin 😊
Always nice to see you in the livestream, Silvia.
ASU fans can celebrate, ASU thug fans need to be looked at. BYU lost. ASU won. Poor sportsmanship mandates reprimands. Period. This goes both ways.
Thanks for commenting.
Comments here are too sensitive. People can ask questions. Get over it.
Thanks, @BSmith_86 for expressing your opinion and supporting our livestream.
If this is how BYU is going to act, go back to being an independent. Bunch of cry babies
Thank you for taking time to express your opinion, @douggles06. We respect it.
BYU is still whining about this. They lost, move on.
Thanks for taking the time to comment, Tim. We appreciate you expressing your opinion.
sounds like sore losers to me; LDS members shouldn’t respond; turn the other cheek.
Thanks for chiming in, Jim.
The hypocrisy you 2 have 😂 is this your first time watching a football game where a coach yells at a ref?
Thanks for expressing your take. We respect it.
Per Jay Drew the Tribune...I'll just stop this comment here.
Ainge and Sichting were both scrappers who didn't back down from big guys
Interceptions in key moments were critical in the last 2 losses.
I had a grits pie at a neighborhood party; it was outstanding.
I remember watching in 2008 at 1/3 of Ute fans decided to get in the BYU players face and taunt them as they left the field. I was astonished. They had an undefeated BCS busting season and rather than go and celebrate with their team, they were trolling players. Disgusting.
Thanks for expressing your opinion, Dan.
