I recently picked this game back up and finally beat it. It is now one of my favorite Genesis games. I cant believe the overlooked it back in the day when it came out. Some of the best music in a 16-bit game.
The reason it was so good is because it was developed by Sonic Team who at the time was still in their prime. I may be wrong but I also believe it was intended to be a new Sonic game originally before becoming its own.
It's both first intended to be a Sonic game, then had different mechanics and used the "Feel" character, and finally becoming Ristar. So you're both right, eh?
@@avideogamemaster JFTR,nobody likes a nitt picking smart ass,the OG comment was pretty much correct because Ristar was created by the Sonic Team, based off of a prototype character which would eventually become Sonic & Ristar!
The original concept was by Sonic Team, but the game was developed by Sega CS R&D. After Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic Team had moved on the develope Nights into Dreams.
Im glad I had a chance to play this on the sonic mega collection on the Gamecube, even if it required the dumbest methods to unlock. Never did beat the final boss though, that guy was balls to walls hard.
@@nightsong81 yep, I'm one of those people. Once my brain decided that "Rye-star" was how to pronounce it, I was incapable of seeing the pun potential. Sega should revive this character. And troll everyone about which way to pronounce his name, by making him eat rice.
nobody who worked on this game has ever come forward with the proper pronunciation so until that day comes, either way of pronouncing it should be fine and nobody should be shat on just because its not the way you yourself personally say it ^_^

Glad you played it too. Ristar is very under appreciated and deserves to be mentioned with the best 16-bit platformers. Just recently, Norm The Video Game Historian did a really nice piece on this game. Its worth checking out for sure. Lots of great info about its history and development.

This is a great game. I have it on the Sonic's Sega Genesis Classics compilation. I was actually just playing this earlier today to unwind after I took my kids to school.
it's incredible how fondly remembered this game is especially considering how late it came out in the Genesis lifespan yet somehow they've never made any sequels of this game. did it possibly not sell while at first because of how late it came out and the Genesis lifespan but now is being fondly remembered years later? I don't know, but I would love to see another game in this franchise and not just have the character used as the guy who holds the checkered flag in the Sonic & All Stars racing games
Should do some Turbodrunk videos sometime. Dunno if you are super into the TG-16 but it is a great console. If you aren't, you should check out some Turbo/PC engine games or Turbo CD/Super CD.
I see your must be subscribed to The Gaming Historian? He did a video on this game 4 days ago or so. Maybe it was just a coincidence. This game seems to be getting the credit it deserves nowadays. Good review dude.

nope, Ristar was just a re-designed of "Feel" the character, which it was one of the first designs for Sonic

You forgot to mention that it has a killer soundtrack.

I was gonna say the same thing! Go Minnesota!
Oofta.
Yeah, I'll admit that it also made me smile. ;)
Finally, someone who pronounces Ristar the way I do rather than "Rye-star" :P
Also failed to mention this has one of the best OST's on the genesis!
He's a star, who can stretch his wrists. There are people who don't see the pun there?

@@nightsong81 I'm pretty sure it's "rye" because in Japanese, rai means lightning. Hense the lightning pattern on his shoes.

@@Gojiro7 I hereby pronounce it Roostar, because his body shape vaguely resembles a male chicken's head comb!
Also this game's water level is one of the best that I've ever seen. Generally water levels are pretty crappy, but in Ristar they nailed it
The moment you mentioned Buck Bumble the damn theme song started playing in my head.

My favourite and one of the best for mega drive /genesis
+1 for the mock Minnesota accent

I played this game for the first time today on the most recent at games genesis classic console and immediately knew it was serious business.
I had this on Game Gear since I was little; I finally got to try the Genesis version years later via Sega/Sonic compilations

That Minnesota/Wisconsin/northmidwest (is there a name for it?) accent you did there was spot on…made me do an actual spit take there😮
Loved that Minnesota accent
Oh ya
Nice review. This game looks pretty good. I missed out on a lot of the later games when I sold my Genesis to buy a Super Nintendo.
I’ve been looking for a copy of this game for years.
Edit: I got a copy for Christmas
great game for sure
This is also available on the iOS App Store for iPhone, though you’ll have to deal with touchscreen controls.
It's criminal that this game never received a sequel or remake.

beautiful review. Never got hooked by this game though
This game was easily in my top 5 favorite Sega games.
Along with Vec torman, I'd say Rist6ar is my favorite Genesis title.;
Love this game. Was wondering if you had covered it. It’s just a shame we never got anymore, not even any romhacks or fangames

+kevgor138 I've seen some GH stuff but I made this video back in November
Great video man. I love seeing this game praised because it really is a slept on classic (like most late release retro games)
+kevgor138 I thought he made that video years ago
I think if SEGA drunk would be a good series and if you did that it would be awesome if you end up doing that thanks in advance
+RT77 Nerf Productions It pretty much is, this is the 5th Sega game I've looked at. Thanks for watching
very good looking. i have to try it
What's up with the gaps in the water surface and flames?

Very much looks like a 32x game.
Wait u a Minnesota resident?
Pete HrapStick I think he's hinted he's from Arizona or Nevada
kool man
It just pisses me off that it didn't even get one sequel
Can you look at SUPER GODZILLA??????????
I didn't like it at the time, same for Zool, i don't know why
Yeah I was the 1000th like
If you don't like Ristar something is wrong with you
Ristar is not weird.
