.. Taking a nap does wonders for me in regards to managing stress and hunger during a prep .. Fatigue can be misinterpreted with low blood sugar, depletion, and hunger .. Rest when needed can offset the need for adding calories with a re-feed
Managing recovery with sleep and rest is a huge player in washing fatigue while the Refeed might only bandaid a situation but also take you out of a deficit. Great points
Agreed, but there's a big problem with this: once some of us get into the single digits, sleep is nearly impossible. Early awakenings and unable to take naps becomes a pain in the ass
Always interesting, John. I could write at length about the reasons why science will never yield answers to the question of refeeds or so many other factors pertaining to contest prep. It’s too extreme with too many variables that change from prep to prep per individual. Therefore, to try to make any generalized determinations applicable to any group seems like an exercise in futility. I would submit that for every “answer” they think they have brings with it another 10 questions and perhaps that suits them so they can stay on the never ending quest for knowledge. Seems unfulfilling to me but to each his or her own. I would also say that academics like the good Dr here, who “prayed to the God he doesn’t believe in” about his legs will always miss a vital component that can often trump science: the human spirit and will. They eschew it because it cannot be quantified or measured. It cannot be explained or accounted for. Hell, they don’t even believe in its existence. Look at the great champions of history... Dorian and Ronnie in our world. Tiger, Jordan, Kobe, Brady, etc... in other sports. None of them relied on study after study or waited for science to bestow upon them the algorithm for winning. They were simply mentally superior to everyone else. They pushed harder. They suffered more. They believed more.
In science we aren’t looking for an all inclusive answer we are testing individual variables to explain what we see in the field for better application. No study can explain it all and we realize that as well. Many of the athletes you mention were very meticulous in thought and had team of coaches that aided them. There was science involved but also sheer mental fortitude. Use all resources to hone your craft.
What an amazing podcast! This is a hidden gem
Another phenomenal conversation, thanks guys
