How to Create and Market a Cowboy-Themed Hat with HTV: A Step-by-Step Guide
Hey everyone! Maggie here, and welcome to today’s video. We will do something a little different - it’s a bit of a challenge. I’m given three elements: a product type, a decoration method, and a theme, and I have to create something out of these.
The product type could be anything from a mug, hat, bag, or t-shirt. The decoration method will vary from DTF transfer, HTV, sublimation, rhinestones, and more. The theme is the wild card - it could be sports, weddings, bachelorette parties, and so on. This challenge aims to spark creativity and show how versatile our products are.
I’m a bit nervous because I don’t know what’s in store. Let’s start with the product type.
Drawing from the first box... it’s a hat!
Next, the decoration method... HTV (Heat Transfer Vinyl)!
    Finally, the theme... Cowboy!
So, I have to decorate a hat with HTV and give it a cowboy theme. Let’s head to the computer and get inspired!
    Finding Inspiration
I’m heading over to Pinterest to see what I can find. Searching for “cowboy graphic tees” provides a plethora of ideas, from vintage vibes to full-color designs. However, given the small surface area of a hat and using HTV, I’ll lean towards simpler designs rather than detailed ones.
I like the bold, simple colors I’m seeing, particularly the reds. It’s a common color in cowboy designs, and I think it will look great on a hat.
    Designing
After spending some time in Illustrator, I came up with two design options. One has bold, simple colors, which I believe will look fantastic on a grey hat. The other design is more detailed with added black, but I decided to go with the simpler one to make the weeding process easier.
    Cutting and Weeding
I’ve cut the design using our Caesar StripFlock Pro in red and white. StripFlock Pro gives a velvety, raised texture, making the hat look more expensive and stylish. After weeding the designs, which didn’t take long due to their simplicity, I’m ready to press them onto the hat.
    Pressing the Hat
I chose a Snapback hat for this project. Its two-tone design will contrast nicely with the red and white HTV. Using our WalaPress hat press, I carefully positioned the design on the hat, using a small pillow inside to ensure even pressure due to the hat's strong crown. After a few adjustments and some heat pressing, the design adhered beautifully.
    Marketing Your Product
Now that the hat is ready, let’s talk about how to market it. Many small businesses start by posting their products against a white wall or on a table, which works, but let’s take it up a notch using Canva.
For a cowboy-themed design, I searched for suitable backgrounds on Canva and found a western field that complements the hat. Uploading the photo I took of the hat, I used Canva’s background remover tool to make the product stand out.
I then adjusted the lighting to ensure the colors remained true to the actual product, avoiding any discrepancies between the online image and the in-hand product. Adding a banner with the company name and a handwritten font on a Polaroid-style photo gave it a personal touch.
    Final Thoughts
The difference between the original photo and the enhanced one is night and day. This extra step in presentation can significantly attract more customers.
Would you buy this product? Let me know what you think in the comments. I hope you enjoyed today’s video. It was super fun and a bit different from our usual content. See you next time!

Why put that background in when it just looks like a flat background? Wouldn’t it be better to put the hat image in a real life looking setting instead? Like being worn by someone outdoors?

This example is just one option among many for showcasing products! Placing the hat in a real-life setting outdoors is also a great way to market this product.
