We CANT SEE! NAVIGATING Underway in insane fog on our Nordhavn trawler!

  • Join us this week on ‪@ABOARDMERMAIDMONSTER‬ as we wrap up our time in Falmouth MA. We specifically came to Falmouth so we could fuel up our Nordhavn trawler. We do this about 2 times a year. Our vessel holds 2,350 gallons of diesel and burns very little while running so we can go a long time without fueling! We chose Falmouth because Falmouth Energy has unbeatable fuel prices. We chose to spend a few lazy days just hanging out. Once our time was up we decided to head to Marion MA, so we could stage and prepare to head through the cape cod canal up to P- town and Boston. Watch as we navigate the famous and sketchy Woods Hole in dense thick pea soup fog. It was nuts. We hope you enjoy this one. We’d love to hear from you in the comments below.
    Cheers

Love the way you spun this tale. Have been stuck in the fog off Block Island and it brought back those memories.

Beautiful AXOPAR 37XC!! It was incredible that you got everyone in the cabin. Not that your Nordhavn isn't amazing, they are just two different animals. Leo is adorable too!

Aww, maaan - yet another missed flyby. That’s our house on Mashnee Island right behind / beside Roo’s head at 13:05 - the grey one with two gable peaks and the huge tan rock sea wall! You were right here!
We were hoping to catch you on your way past us this year; we saw you anchored in Marion and were thinking of Insta-messaging you. But we needed to go to BOS for 3 days right then (and so could only wave at you from Fisherman’s View restaurant at the east end of the canal as you came thru).
Nevertheless if you swing up here again next year we’ll be on our own 36’ weekend cruiser and maybe can connect.

It was a wonderful episode. It doesn't seem too cold there yet, hopefully you miss the cold New England weather. It must be nice when the less serious boaters stay ashore. Have a great week.

We've navigated Gusto at night in Barnegat Bay and it is an exercise in concentration. You have to pick out the marker lights against the background of streetlights, using the GPS/chart to check your bearings and the light frequency info to be sure you're heading to a marker and not a house.

I hated fog especially in busy water ways, real pucker factor. You guys did well.

Running in the fog can be pretty un-nerving. There isn't always time to react. Sometimes its hard to coordinate eyeballs and radar.

It is funny, I used to have a boat and then moved over to a Big Class A bus and we do the same things only on land instead of on the water.

Heavy fog on a yacht can be completely disorienting. Like flying an airplane IFR. You must trust your instruments. Good job!

I had a very scary episode in a boat during heavy fog too. It is very nerve-racking indeed. We had no electronics.
    Enjoyed your episode.

I went to school at Tabor….Marion is a beautiful area……..2:50 eye roll…lmao…Woods hole is notorious for issues….people get confused where the triangle ledge is going into Woods hole and then they mentally think reds should be on the Port side going into Buzzards Bay……It’s confusing for people who have not been through a few times…..Even large yachts with all the equipment hit rocks….Add fog as another layer….However I think pea soup fog actually makes you trust your instruments more and it is easier.

I'd be nervous in that fog I was off the coast of Rye NH and it got foggy. Scary stuff!!

Also, you didn’t tell us if you took the “Broadway” diagonal thru Woods Hole, or stuck to the (safer) right angle / L long way. Given the fog & notorious rocks that lurk at the edges of Broadway (which I haven’t had the courage to take even once yet), the curious want to know!

Wow that fog is thick. We get it hugely in Marlborough Sounds too. Here is our experience with little fast boats appearing from nowhere : ua-cam.com/video/QrNBUUxM7EU/v-deo.html

Never understood why with family in Utah and California you haven't crossed over to the Pacific NW. there is a large Northaven community there and years of exploring to do. Seattle is very close to Utah. Seattle in the summer and South to Ca, in the winter. There are a number of very experienced vloggers there to guide you. Then Hawaii is just a hop skip and jump then beyond if you really want to see the world. And there is no hurricanes.

We’ve thought about it but we have also boat a lot of the coast all through childhood so it doesn’t have the same appeal to us. Maybe one day we will though! It is very gorgeous that’s for sure!

Fog takes away one of your senses. I rather drive In big snow and see vrs drive in fog. I never owned a boat that had a way to stop. It’s the others I fear. Never trust always verify. If you move faster then you can see to stop your an idiot. So understand Brooks concern. But we know brook is the admiral and has one the bestest captain . 😊

You are a pretty rude guy dude. Brooke is just showing the realities of life on the water. Both good and bad. Go find a wife that would be out there doing this as tough as she is. Only a small portion of our life is on film. It’s important to show both sides. If you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say it at all. I love her and am beyond proud of her.

Ahhh the mystery of the shoe. I've had my share of lost items. It's part of parenting. What are some of the interesting things that have fallen overboard ? 🦜
