    My explanation of the series connection is whack!?!? This is only a parallel extension mod. I don’t even think a series connection would work without additional stuff.

    • @yoann_
      @yoann_ 2 роки тому +1

      Hi, I think a series connection is possible by using jack with shunt ( a switched jack ). BTW you're extension cab looks gorgeous ! I own the 15W and I want to do the same configuration (but in series) , I also love the ET65 :)

    • @jeffberg8015
      @jeffberg8015 2 роки тому +2

      it is correct that as shown the mod can only be done in parallel, and further only with 16 or 32 Ohm speakers.. An important thing to remember is that how the speakers are connected changes the impedance of the whole system. Parallel connection halves the impedance, while series doubles it. So two 16 Ohm speakers connected in parallel will be 8 Ohms resistance, two 8 Ohm speakers will be 4 Ohms which would not be recommended.

    in case anyone is unclear , as he mentioned his IS NOT THE STOCK SPEAKER!! If you have the stock 8 ohm speaker in the amp, you will be under 8 ohms impedance, which while ive never had an issue or heard of one, running an 8 ohm amp into a 4 ohm cab, you just get punchier mids and more volume, but if your real obsessive about following exact manufacturers guidelines, then an 8 ohm combo amp speaker and a second 8 ohm (or 16 ohm) speaker will put you under the low-end impedance number, could take some life off your tubes i suppose but nothing i ever noticed

    • @oldguyjammin9732

      Good words, seems like I had 2 16s in parallel. But you’re right, I believe the rule of thumb is twice over or half under the output jack impedance. Matching is best but I believe you can use either a 16 ohm load or 4 ohm load from an 8 ohm output... of course you can match that as well. Mesa a proponent of those 4 ohm cabs.

      My Monoprice 15 came stock with a Celestion Hot 100 that’s 16 ohms. If I want to upgrade my speaker do I need a 100 watt 16 ohm replacement to get the same volume? I believe most of these shipped with Celestion 70/80 8 ohm. Don’t know the wattage they used.

    Hello I'm getting one of these tomorrow I have a speaker cab stating 15 ohms, will this be OK to connect? I'm confused because there is only one input on the back for 8 to 16 ohms? Thanks I should have listened at school!!

    • @oldguyjammin9732
      @oldguyjammin9732  3 роки тому

      It should be okay as long as you make sure the 15 ohm cab is connected in parallel with the speaker in the combo amp. Negative (-) from the combo speaker should connect to (-) on the cab speaker and the (+) from combo speaker should connect to the (+) on the extension cab. The output jack allows for any speaker load from 8-16 ohms, so two 8 ohm speakers in series or two 16 ohm speakers in parallel. Follow the directions in the video and you should be fine. You’ll have to have a 16 ohm speaker in your Combo for this to work.... 15 ohms is really weird rating...?

      Yes sir, I sold mine a while ago but never had an issue and I didn’t hear anything bad about the amp while I had it. Apparently the first run had more problems than the second. Currently Stage Right is into it’s 3rd run and has upgraded the stock tubes to JJs. I’m not aware of any fuse problems and have NEVER met a fuse I could not replace... someone doesn’t know what they’re talking about :) It’s a great amp with a unique tone and takes pedals REALLY well. For the features it offers, it’s ridiculous. I really appreciated the tube mod (put a 12AY7 in socket 1) and I liked changing the speaker to a Swampthang or Texas Heat. Just last week I wondered if I shouldn’t pick up another one. Play it like you wanna break it \m/

    I just did this with two 8 ohm speakers in series (I think. Red to ring, and black to tip. Final connection is red on speaker 1 to black on speaker 2, and vice versa.) But it just sounds out of phase. Is that because I’ve got two different speakers? I’m running the stock Seventy/80 and a Vintage 30 in a Harley Benton 1x12 cab.

    • @oldguyjammin9732
      @oldguyjammin9732  3 роки тому

      Very cool, but bummer the tone isn’t what you’re expecting. It should be Amp + to speaker A+ / Amp - to Speaker B - / and then connect the other two remaining terminals with a third wire. Speaker “type” shouldn’t be a factor. Much easier in a 2x12 cab then with a stack. Each wire from the amp will have to go to a different speaker, then connect the middle part. So you’ll have to disconnect one wire from the speaker in the combo. Good luck

    • @NormTre
      @NormTre 3 роки тому

      @@oldguyjammin9732 Thank you, that makes sense, but doesn't sound like it will be easy to do cleanly like you did with just a jack on the back of the combo and still use the internal speaker by itself. I'll have to put some thought into it.

      Nope, put them in parallel it'll be 4 ohms which is really not good for your output transformer, put em in series it'll be 16 ohms, this amp isn't optimized for 16 ohms even though it says It can handle it, it's actually an 8 ohm tap, 16 ohms will work and not hurt anything, but, you'll only get half of the amps rated power out of it which will make it loose volume and punch, get either two 16 ohm versions of the speaker to put them in parallel to make 8 ohms, or only use one of the 8 ohm speakers you have for now....

    If you wire two 8 ohm speakers in parallel, it'll be four ohms which can fry your output transformer, you could get two 4 ohm speakers in series to make 8, or two 8 ohm speakers in series to make 16 "if it has the transformer tap for that" or two 16 ohm speakers in parallel to make 8 ohms... Seems monoprice was lazy about making two different output windings for the different impedance loads which they only have one, i wouldn't use anything other then 8 on this amp, as it will most likely sound the best with 8 ohms on it, had this amp had a 16 ohm transformer output right next to the 8 ohm tap, you would still get rated power out put at 16 ohms, with this lazy set up from mono price you'll get half power, and it probably won't sound all that great as in not a lot of meat to the tone because it isn't in reality optimized for 16 ohms, though you won't damage the amp with a little higher impedance, it just limits what can be done with it, any lower then 8, yes, it will damage the amp eventually.

    • @oldguyjammin9732
      @oldguyjammin9732  4 роки тому +1

      Well some of what you say is true but I wouldn’t worry about hurting this Stageright when it states 8-16 ohm load. Many tube guys will tell you can “halve or double over” impedance recommendations without too much trouble. Mesa lists 4 or 8 ohm loads on their heads but state in the manuals that 16 ohms is fine - no problem. I’m running two 16s in parallel for a total of 8 and don’t have “half power problems” at all, in fact it sounds almost twice as loud cuz of all the air I’m pushing now. No worries everyone \m/

      @@fedayeentaqx9956 using a 4 ohm speaker on an 8 ohm output transformer, especially when it comes to tube amps would be incredibly stupid..... Not only do you risk burning out your output transformer from demanding to much current from it which in older gear can be a pain to find an equivalent replacement, but you will also stress out your output tubes from the reflected impedance of the lower load on the 2ndaries and you will also stress out the tube rectifier and your power transformer too. If people want to be ignorant and run low ohm loads on a tap not designed for it on vintage gear no less, then that's on them. Things are rated the way they are for a reason.

      That's a good way to blow up the audio transformer. The one built into the amp is likely only rated down to 8 ohms and oldguyjammin didn't pull off of that tap, but rather just pulled the 16 ohm tap down to 8 ohms. Over long periods of jamming, this will cause the audio transformer to get hot and eventually fail. You may get "more power" by running this at 4 ohms, but it will not last very long at all.
