Daniel, my husband and I have watched you for years (since he is a whiskey lover!), and I am really enjoying the new format. Your marketing takes encourage me, as an author building her platform. Thank you for creating these and sharing your insights. I'll keep watching! So glad to be a "sailor" with friends who recognize my benchmarks even when I blow past them.
As a former rower I’d like to add a 5th. The rower, it’s a slower way, not reliant on the wind although it helps, similarly needing a destination, but it’s hard repetitive work that breaks you down. The enemy therefor is yourself loosing site of the goal in the pain but if you keep working, you can make it.
Daniel, I love everything that is Crowded Barrel. I love everything I’ve seen of the Whiskey Marketing Academy. I especially enjoy your bits of wisdom shared in these videos. I love the nerding out over the whiskey, but the bits of true, storytelling and life lessons shared are exceptional. I plan to see you in person at school within the next 3 years. In so many ways you remind me of the man I call Pop, the father whom I shared no DNA with. Thank you, I cannot tell you how much I look forward to the Vault drops.
Quite possibly the most deep and insightful Lagavulin 11 year review I’ve ever seen. Thanks for all the info and I’m wondering where I fit in in all of that. Also now I have Enya’s sail away song in my head.
Damn you Daniel… how do you keep punching out these kinds of videos with stories that make me have to confront things that I’ve been battling in my head! 😂 Seriously though - first ever UA-cam comment and it’s to praise you and this new direction that the channel has taken since the separation. Very well done and I love it. Thank you!
Did an Offerman Edition flight with some friends recently (well, we didn't have the original 11, but we had the Guinness Cask, the Charred Oak, and the Caribbean Cask). Thought they were all pretty terrific! The Caribbean may have been my favorite of the three - that funky rum undercurrent plays really well with the classic Lagavulin notes.
Don't forget the seagulls. Those who fly in, make a lot of noise, shit all over the place, and then fly away again. Love the thought-provoking direction you're taking the channel in, look forward to more!
I’m sure you’re painfully aware, but the goals you’re describing use the SMART format when it comes to “sailors”. That’s a VERY similar format for most successful people and is certainly the case for me as a program and project manager. Well said and awesome video. I definitely agree with your categories of people!
As an ex Coastie (I earned my Cuttermans pin) and now retired systems guy, I won't take a class but do hope to find my to Cowded Barrel someday for a pour or 2. Fair winds and following seas to you and the staff.
I've had the Offerman Charred Oak, and recently got my hands on the Offerman Rum Cask (never got a chance to try the Guiness or the other Offerman, I forget what that one was). The Charred Oak was, to date, the smokiest scotch I've ever had, and I loved it, but I think I like the Rum Cask just a little bit more, it's got this great briny note to it, almost like a Talisker, and also this rum funk on the back end. Just delightful. I hope all of you get a chance to try it soon! Cheers!
I was feeling pretty good about myself when I didn't fit into the first two categories... Time to pick a few practical goals that are in alignment with my North Star.
Daniel went veggie? I couldn’t. I don’t eat much meat. But can’t say no to a bloody fry up. For breakfast or for supper. Only part of a fryup I don’t eat is black pudding. But might end up changing my tastes on that. As never used to like smoky/peated whisky. But now I love them.
Hey Daniel! Love the videos! Pertaining to the video, can a drifter, surfer, drowner, become a sailor? I would think so? Also I work over at Cascade Hollow Distilling and ran into Zack and Dustin from Balcones! That afternoon me and my buddy Logan were doing a special edition of an event we call the Single Malt Club and we hit a couple of our North Stars. We are connected to a non-profit and the tasting was about the Master Distillers and Blenders of Scotland. The cool part was it was with our Master Distiller Nicole Austin! Dustin ended up donating a bottle of Balcones Single Malt for our next meeting which will be American Single Malt! I would definitely credit you and Rex as an inspiration on my path that I have taken in the last year. There is more to my story and I hope to tell you one day at Wizard Academy!
Daniel, wondering if you’d had the original Offerman and 2nd edition Guinness cask. Don’t believe either ever appeared on the channel. Seems like a really consistent lineup of great finished whisky.
Would you consider talking about why you became a vegetarian and what benefits you have noticed since making that change? I was a vegetarian until I was 20. I started eating meat on my doctor's recommendation.
Wizard Academy is a non-profit organization that Daniel runs, but Crowded Barrel is a for-profit company that Rex runs. Therefore, Rex had to leave the Whiskey Vault channel because it may be construed that Rex is using the non-profit channel to advertise for Crowded Barrel, which the IRS doesn't like.
I do understand your point that you're trying to make. But as a person who has been learning how to surf since they were about 12 and a half years old I do take slight offense to your reference about surfers. As I said though I do understand what you mean cuz yes we are constantly chasing the next wave but at the same time people who are truly devoted to surfing do it because that's when they find their most calm inner peace introspective period of being able to think and that's when we come up with some of our most brilliant ideas. I have been a butcher and a smoker for 25 years now. And I get some of my best ideas on how to cut me recipes for seasonings stuff like that when I'm surfing so like I said I do understand where you're coming from but not all surfers are oh shiny I love you Daniel keep up the good work have a great day I'm sorry my punctuation sucks
Interesting philosophy but what is the sailor that wants to drift or surf for a while? Where drifting or surfing is their goal (drowning is usually only a goal of professional drowners)?? Would they be...... vacationers???
Wait. When did you become a vegetarian? I succinctly remember Rex talking about how deftly you could carve meat from bone on Buffalo wings. Was that just made up? So confused here.
This endless business and life coaching need to bucket people into discreet categories has been around for forever. I don't disagree that this is a powerful metaphor designed with good intent, but the reality is that people are complex, and are all four at once. There is no start line, but we all have the same finish line. Underwater, haha.
Where you a therapist in a previous life? This sound like a therapist would say. I’m not a fan of colored whiskey, I can expect chill filtering whiskey.
These stories get more philosophical and more interesting every time. Daniel should do audio books, his voice is sublime.
Sitting in my office but, I am a simple man. I see Lagavulin, I click. Even at work!
Literally

An outstandingly simple, yet devastatingly accurate life guide, delivered with immaculate precision and empathy.
As a former rower I’d like to add a 5th. The rower, it’s a slower way, not reliant on the wind although it helps, similarly needing a destination, but it’s hard repetitive work that breaks you down. Great point. Truly.
Love it
Without exaggeration, this was one of the most influential and touching videos I have watched in a long long time.

I love your explanation of Lag 16. Totally agree.

Let the bottle rock. 🥃
Daniel you're awesome! Love this.
Love this Lagavulin! I bought a case! Terrific video Daniel!!
Loving this content Daniel, Thank you!
Goals are SMART. Specific. Measurable. Assignable. Realistic. Time-related. Cheers!
While im not allowed to smoke in the house, having a library where i can relax and drink a nice whisky is my favorite way to spend a stormy night
Another great story and a whiskey that sounds great. Thanks.
See you guys on Monday! Can’t wait to start the Wizard academy
Daniel Thank you so much ......keep them coming ............Cheers

Wow, just wow. That's a great one. I have no words. Thank you truly for another great conversation 🥃
I love this rendition. Have one bottle left.
Got the Cigars but now want that Laga whiskey to go with them !
Thanks
The four-types-of-people narrative is authentic and compelling. Bigger than whisk(e)y, truly. Great episode. Unexpectedly powerful. Gracias! ✌️
It's almost as if Daniel knows more than just what we are familiar with. ;)
Amazing content and message. Also makes me want to open the bottle I picked about a year ago when it came out. Cheers!
Cheers 🥃
Thanks for the TED talk!! LOL Love Lagavulin and great video. Met many of the surfers and drowners in life. But try to keep the sailors around!
Thanks for the review 🥃

Oooooh I happen to have this one on the shelf. Look forward to tasting it with you ... once pesky work responsibilities are done for the day. 🙃
Whoops! This is my fave Offerman but I just got a case of the 4 edition! Fabulous!
🎵 “A sailor travels to many lands, any place he pleases, and he always remembers to wash his hands… so he don’t get no diseases!” 🎵
The charred oak was good but the Guinness cask finish is to die for! I wish they’d make more
I was feeling pretty good about myself when I didn't fit into the first two categories...

Welcome all Whiskey Vaulters to Story Time and barrel "table" amusement with Daniel!
Come for the whiskey reviews stay for the stories
I love sailink! 😉

By the end of this I had the song "The Impossible Dream" going through my mind. Thanks for reminding me what it takes to always try to sail onward.
Sailor describes the journey so far pretty well. Now it's time to figure out the next destination.
What's your cigar of choice? :)
Love from india ❤
Salud amigo 🥃

Three kind’s of people in this world, those that
make things happen, those that watch things happen or those that wonder what the hell just happened.
Lagavulin is the floatation device of life
Destination = Measurable benchmarks.
Nebulous goal = Drink all the whiskeys.
Destination = Drink 200 different whiskeys before it kills me.
That laga is damn yummy, cheers!
Daniel how long have you been a vegetarian I have a vague recollection of you and Rex pairing whiskey with barbecue
About 4 ish years now
Would you consider talking about why you became a vegetarian and what benefits you have noticed since making that change? I was a vegetarian until I was 20. I started eating meat on my doctor's recommendation.
I'm in Edinburgh right now - not an easy place for a vegetarian 😅
It was a bit hard when I was there, but there are definitely some options :)
In all honesty, I am probably a drifter, maybe an occasional surfer. But my dad was a drowner, so to me it’s a triumph just to not be one myself.
i'm out of the loop but what happened to the other host?

@@johng5710 I see, thanks! That's too bad but Daniel by himself is still cool
I’m definitely a drifter
The number of hard G's in this video is equal to the age statement of the whiskey.
Science

I still need a properly defined North Star. I’ve been stuck in survival mode for so long.
I was there for years. I know how it feels. There's definitely light on the other side.
Damn Daniel, them 4 types of people is spot on!
5👍

@@WhiskeyVault Thank you. Now I know. 🙂
Well now the compass tattoo makes more sense.
So you want sailors that mark the spot with X, and then have a pirate party when they get there. Got it :)
For the Honourrrr- oops I mean the algorithm!!❤
How dare you toy with my barrel level awareness Daniel.
That feels like manipulation (because I paid attention in the last video ☝️😁)
How long have you been a vegetarian? I could have sworn I heard you talking about eating barbecue ?
About four years
Daniel, O Capitan my Captain , i shall sail with thee to the gates of the underworld and beyond
There are 10 kinds of people. Those that understand binary, and those that don't.
Oh my god, my family is full of sufferers and at least one professional drowner.
Surfers he ment to say.
Are you sampling just whiskey or mushrooms?
Daniel drives Subaru to Trader Joe's. Don't be upset that it 150% true!!!
Sailing(k)
You are NOT wearing jeans??!!?? 😳😳
Good catch :)

Oh man. Totally

Your really a vegetarian??? 😅
I, too, flatter people that give me money by telling them they are the best kind of people.
you're so not gnarly. life's a wave ride it dude :) not to be taken serious
Love you Daniel, but more whisky talk and less marketing school bollocks please x
As chancellor of a business and marketing school, that might be a problem :-)
😢
