My sons cozmo battery use to last 5mins and shut down, I saw John's video on battery replacement looked way complicated for me, got in touch with John for his services, sent cozmo to him on Friday and got it back a few days later, now cozmo battery lasts way over an hour and keeps going. Thank you John you're amazing gave a whole lease of life to the bot. My son absolutely loves it. Highly recommended to anyone needing battery replacement. Mohan
Excellent tutorial but a little over my capabilities and I was worried I will not be able to put him back together properly. So instead, I used the service that John provides and we already have Cozmo back to life and working perfectly. Our Cosmo kept disconnecting. After some troubleshooting we figured the battery wasn't holding a charge. Sent it to John Judge and now our Cosmo's as good as new. Many thanks John!
Just finished replacing the battery in my son’s Cozmo. Took me about an hour and turned out great 👍 Your other video with the more detailed soldering information was very helpful as well. Thanks so much, he’s so happy to have that little guy back 😊
Hi John. Just wanted to say thank you for this post. I was gifted a sickly Cozmo who could only handle a few minutes of play and decided to risk surgery on him. Got a new battery and followed your guidance to get him apart. My soldering skills are not that good so I didn't risk touching the circuit board and instead went with cutting the wires as close to the dead battery as possible then exposing the core. I twisted the new wires on gently and then added blob of solder and electrical tape to project them. All went back together and now have a fully functioning Cozmo who handled an hour plus earlier with no sign of red on his back. Couple things I noted as I went through the process, it takes more force than seems right to get the "geared" arm off. I could see how the "key" worked and I was at the right angle but it just didn't want to let go! Re-assembly of the head was also very tricky. I didn't clock at first that the bars that the screws connect into have a way around - both in terms of left/right and the shaped ends that go into the right hand side of his head (where the spring is). In the end I found it best to attach those end first, then slide the LED over the lower bar, align the top bit and the windscreen and then screw the left side of his head on last. He is a very cute little thing now he works fully!
Hey Simon! Thanks for your reply! I love reading stories like this. I agree on the two points you make - I think I gloss over them in the video but will definitely revisit and make a clearer demonstration for future reference. The gear arm has a definite pop when removed, which can be daunting the first time. And the head is also very fiddly when having to line up the tubes and spring to get the assembly back together. Great to hear that you got your unit running around again!
I highly recommend John's replacement service as we purchased our Cozmo second hand and the battery was pretty much dead from the start. After watching this video, I opted to take out Johns offer to replace the stock battery with the upgraded battery. I posted it to John on a Friday afternoon and my cosmo was back Tuesday morning. Excellent service and value for money. Thank you so much John Judge :) 10/10
Thanks, I just got my Cozmo back from the nephews and the battery is toast - I will be watching this very carefully once the new battery comes in this week (ordered the exact one you'd noted)! My 6yo and 3yo are so excited to play with Cozmo. Thanks from Aus!
Hi John, just wanted to say thanks for your videos on this. I bought Cozmo before my daughter was born and by the time she was old enough to really enjoy him the battery was only giving 5-10 minutes. I have been promising her for months to replace the battery and she always loves watching your videos and reminding me. Today I got around to it and your videos were very helpful. My daughter new what to do from memory from your videos and was giving me tips. (She is four next month) Cozmo is back together with a new 600 mah battery and currently charging nicely. Happy daughter. Thanks.
This is amazing! You've made my day with your kind words! I'm glad you got the robot working again (sounds like you had great tech support from your daughter!) Thanks! and Well Done!
Thanks for this awesome tutorial! Not used to working on things as small as Cozmo but managed it with some patience. The old battery was so swollen! He runs around for ages now.
Thanks for the video. I was able to change the battery. My little girl is happy! I did not find a 503040 lipo near where I live, but I replaced it with a 403035 lipo 450 mAh. It does the job! Most tricky part was to reassemble the head i think.
Hi John, Thank you for the nice explanation in the video about replacing the Cozmo battery. After 5 years of running the battery was at 30 % and I bought a new one and replaced it without any problem thanks to your video. Great the kids from Croatia
Excellent video John! I think that most skilled hobbyists could perform this repair. A few words of caution, however: when you feed the new battery cables, they are typically "live" and have the potential of damaging the circuit or components if they happen to touch any circuit area and make a connection prior to the exact points where they need to be soldered. It may be helpful to snip each new battery lead so that only the insulated wire is fed through, and then stripped just prior to soldering. Additionally, rosin left on the circuit board after soldering can cause problems: usually, 90% isopropyl alcohol and a cue-tip should be used on the soldering joint to remove any excess rosin that pools around the connection. The final job should be clean, shiny, and rosin-free. Finally, the original Li-Po battery is still potentially dangerous because the battery can still hold a residual charge. The leads should not be shorted, they should be snipped off, and the old battery disposed of properly in a recycling facility. A shorted or swelling Li-Po battery can explode and/or cause a surprisingly spectacular fire (see UA-cam LiPo battery explosions for examples of what can go wrong).
Thanks Jim! Excellent points here. I am in the process of making a short video dedicated to the soldering process and I will use your comment as the basis of the talking points. Over time I’ve developed a safer way of installing the battery in line with your points- you have encouraged me to get it finished.

Great tutorial! Thank you so much for doing this! I just replaced the battery in my son's Cozmo and your directions helped tremendously. Found the battery on Amazon for $15, perfect fit and twice the capacity. The head is a little tricky but I found if you only remove 3 of the 4 screws, and leave in the lower left screw, it will hold that little plastic rod in place making it easier to go back together. I accidentally left out the counterweight the first time so I got to tear it apart twice! Also the trick with the arms is there is a little tab or clip that you can barely see but if you lift the arms all the way up becomes visible that you want to push in so it releases. I didn't quite see that in the video, they don't just pop off, you have to press in that little white tab, just in case others have the same question. Thanks again! Cozmo is up and running like new.
Thank you very much for your detailed video. The original battery was not holding a charge I did the upgrade yesterday and my son can now play with Cozmo again. Cozmo lasted more than 2 hours. My son is very happy :-)
This is a fantastic guide. I’ll admit it - I was worried I’d be sending John a bag of parts to fix, but it worked! With John’s guidance, I did it! My son is ecstatic. Thanks, John!!
Hi John. My sons Cozmo shows no response when placed on the charger. Not sure if this is a battery issue. I would like to send Cozmo to you for repair if it is determined that the battery is the culprit. Thank you. How do I get an address to send?
I bought Cozmo used and it tended to randomly shut down very frequently. I excluded battery problems because by repositioning it in its base it immediately returned ready to go again. I've been thinking about issues with wifi disconnecting or any interference but I've noticed that when cozmo loses wifi connection it doesn't tend to shut down immediately. So I followed this guide and opened it up and found a lot of rust between the electrical contacts, as well as in the 5 minute video. I easily cleaned everything up with isopropyl alcohol and now it seems to work fine.
Thanks for this, I got my Cozmo battery replaced. Yes it's a lot of steps, the battery is deep down at the bottom of the build pile. Once you get down there it's very easy to replace the battery. The hardest part of the whole mess was getting the head back together. I felt like I could use a 3rd hand. In the end the trick there is to get the screen in, then put the two halves of the head back together almost all the way, maybe even thread on of the screws in 2 turns, then clip the face plate and the speaker back in place.
Great video and a very helpful man! I replaced the battery with no problems with this video but still had no response from Cozmo apart from a flashing green light on its back. I emailed John and within minutes he replied and advised me about wifi signals blocking Cozmo. I will admit I didn't see how this would affect Cozmo from turning on but after turning off my Wifi mesh Cozmo came to life! Thanks again John! I would've bought another one off ebay if it wasn't for you. Much appreciated. Mark.
Thank you, John. This video is a huge help to me! Our Cozmo was down to about 8-10 minutes of runtime per charge. Replaced the battery and now our Cozmo has new life! I would caution everyone that the larger mah batteries are longer and that the biggest possible battery is not automatically best. We replaced with a 620mah and it rests against the front bottom sensor. Everything seems to work well, but it's a very tight fit. The 540s or 600s would likely be better overall fit but you can squeeze the 620 mah in there.
Thanks to you the little digital friend of my son now has again full power. The old battery only had 5 minutes of playtime left. Thumbs up, great video!
Very helpful video, thank you for sharing this and the info on the replacement battery! My daughter is so thrilled to have her friend back. I did two swap outs back to back, and did find it easier to reassemble the second cozmo by removing the head screws only on his left side. This kept the internal screw rods in place, and reduced the tricky head reassembly from ten angry minutes to one slightly annoying minute. Hope that helps!
Excellent! I always nice to read these stories - thanks for the top-tip on the head assembly (I'll probably make a new video showing what you described; it will no doubt make reassembly much quicker!
Thank you so much for that video. You did not only safe our cozmos life, you made the twins quite happy, as they now are old enough to get a lot of fun about the interaction with >daddys(!)< toy. The first testrun (man, I was nervous!) after the operation gave a solid 2+ hours playtime. I myself more confidence in fixing things before just bringing them to the next bin.
sdhpCH Thank You! This makes me happy. You should feel proud of yourself for completing this repair. You now have the knowledge and experience to keep Cozmo alive forever.
Thankyou for this tutorial :D I'm not good with my hands at all but this video (+ alot of time) made me fix my cozmo. He's recharging rn, thankyou for this amazing video :)
Thank you very much for your detailed video. I did the upgrade yesterday and now, Cozmo can play more than 2 hours (132 minutes), it's amazing, thank you again :)
Thanks! Great to hear this helped. Ideally I’d like to form a list of repairers around the world to help others out. Many people live outside the U.K. and need this service.
My Cozmo dies pretty quick. I was curious on how to fix the battery and this really helped. Unfortunately I’m not certain that I own a soldering iron to complete this repair, so I was curious to see how much it costs to send in my Cozmo and have it fixed.
I just found my anki cozmo during a recent move after not seeing it for a few years, and the battery is dead. I feel confident in following your instructions, I just wanted to check what the dimensions for the battery are? I don't want to order one that is too big. Thanks!
I’ve been confirmed by anki (ex)technician that the spring into the head is usueless for any Cozmo of the latest gen, the one with the button on the back. It is tricky to put it back, if your Cozmo has a button just leave it out.
Thanks so much! My youngest wants to play with Cosmos after a hands off from his older sister but it keeps getting disconnected after 5min and we can restart it again and repeat. Not sure if it is battery related but I will get a new battery pack from your link just in case as I tried everything from the anki website. Too bad it is no longer supported. Love this little guy! Thanks again for your great video. Subscribed!
Thanks @@TheJohnJudge one comment on tha way I did it. Like another comment I saw today, i was not confident enough on my soldering skill to directly attack the circuit. I just cut the existing wires and solder the new battery on them. Worked like a charm.
Thanks for the video, upgraded the battery, everything lights up but that’s about it, can’t reset and the WiFi password isn’t recognised so some nice scrap !
My cozmo doesn't make any sound after I put him back together I'm tempted to see if anything was left unplugg but I made sure it wasn't all I hear if mechanical and the battery is new
I will make a video on this issue. It means his the wire connecting his speaker (which is als his WiFi aerial! To his head has come loose and needs to be soldered back.
I've just followed this guide and upgraded my cozmo's battery which has worked fine thank you. When resyncing it with the tablet and during the tutorial with cozmo trying to find the cubes his head just flips up and down constantly unable to find the cube. The cubes are flashing blue but it can't find them. any ideas?
I tried to unwire the battery but my cozmo got way to much solder on it and it wouldnt come off so i used scissors to cut the battery off and put in my new one i soldered the cables together still red lighting button but loading works im not sure if its entirely broken or i just need to redo that battery wiring somehow
I did the replacement a few days ago and woke him up today and he lasted as long as he did before the replacement, whereas earlier today he was going for ages! Any suggestions?? 😰😰
Do you have a wifi mesh system or signal booster attached to your router? strong wifi signals on the 2.4GHz channel can overpower Cozmo's aerial and cause it to shut down (which show the same symptoms as a bad battery)
Thanks so much for this tip but we don’t have a signal booster. 😕 He did last a lot longer when we tried him again earlier, do you have any other reasons why the battery would die so much sooner than is estimated? (He has been on charge for at least 1 hour and also you are one of the best repair youtubers I’ve EVER watched as you make very detailed tutorials and whenever something is wrong with our cozmo, we can always come over to your channel and you have a tutorial on how to fix it! You’re an absolute legend and there is no reason why you should have dislikes on any of your videos as they are a ‘live saver for our little cozmo!’ 😄😄😄😄
Regarding the rubber sticker on the battery, how necessary would it be to transfer over to the new battery from the old one as I have found others say it serves as a thermal insulator between the motherboard contacts under the battery and the battery itself and if so what issues could arise from this?
I think it predominantly prevents any components on the motherboard from piercing the battery sleeve (they’re quite sharp). Also I guess it stops the battery sleeve accidentally shorting any components because it does rest on top of them.
Hi,I have a new battery and have stripped the Cozmo down but didnt realise the battery needed to be soldered, can i send it to yiu to replace and re assemble - can you message with a price please?
Hi, I sent you an email earlier today about fixing my Cozmo, and hopefully replacing the old battery which lasts for 5 mins with a better one. I was wondering if you are still able to do that for me. Thanks!
Hi there. My cozmo screen is very dull and cannot find anyway to adjust the brightness or information online as to how to fix this... Would you be willing to upgrade the battery for me as mentioned in your video? Many thanks in advance!
i changed my battery just like in this tutorial and it will claim to charge but when i pulled it off the charger when it said it was done. it would not turn on. i got it to turn on while it was on the charger but nothing would move
Ok. I could do it but would recommend you join the Official Digital Dream Labs Cozmo Page on Facebook as I know there are US peeps that could help you out also.
Very informative video John, thank you. I have a Vector which has a problem with it's head PCB/LCD. This unit does not complete the boot-up cycle and just stays with the green power light on plus one white/blue light. I know for certain the problem is the head PCB/LCD as I have two more Vectors and i've interchanged some parts. Have you any idea what would cause this please?
Hi Les, that sounds like an issue with the wifi aerial, which is connected to the screen in the robot's head. There is a similar anomaly with Cozmo - a single green flashing light interspersed with blue/clear lights, indicates that he is stuck in a boot cycle. Invariably, it's due to the fact that he can't start his wifi aerial to become a hotspot. the root cause of this is the powerful wi-fi mesh systems that people have in their homes, which causes a conflict and drowns out the robots wifi frequency. This probably doesn't help you, but could be a place to start. Please share any breakthroughs you may have.
I followed the video and replaced the battery, but the Cozmo shows "cozmo wants to be put down" now and the head is keep moving up and down while the lift never moved. Do you know which sensor maybe damaged during I replacing the battery? When assembly the cozmo back, do I need calibrate head and lift position?
Ok I might want you to fix it for me. I've got a couple questions. First, I'd like to know how much the service of you fixing it costs. Also, I disassembled my Cozmo all the way already, so would it be okay if you fixed it from there?
I was wondering if you would be able to replace the battery in my son's Cozmo. I don't have any soldering tools and would was wondering what it would cost for the repair. The red light on top just flashes.
Firstly, allow me to explain the meaning of the 6 digit part number of the battery 503236. The first digit is the thickness of the battery, 50 = 5mm (60 = 6mm and so on. If the first number is, say, 55 then that would be 5.5mm). The second digit is the width, 32 = 32mm wide. The last digit is the length, 36 = 36mm long. I really can't understand how people think can they get that much more mah from a battery that is damn near the same size? It is simply not possible. It's the amount of chemicals inside the single cell "Package" (Size) that gives it the mah rating. Therefore, you MUST use a larger battery to get more mah, period. Your comparison is the same thickness, but a 2mm narrower and a 4mm longer battery. Actually only making it a total difference of 2mm larger. 2mm does not equate to almost twice the mah rating. The Chinese are notorious for their misleading and lying to people about their products. This is one of those times. Another example of this is, "You cannot fit two gallons of baby shit into a one gallon bucket". Another thing about it that might surprise you is, Cozmo's original battery lasted maybe 30 minutes, more or less. If you replace it with a 30% larger battery, you will get 9 minutes, more or less, longer. I know, right? 30% sounds like a lot, but it isn't really that much. So, when DDL tells you that the new Cozmo 2.0 will give you up to 30% longer runtime, now you know. The "up to" is because this is just an approximation. Due to the amount of chemicals not being equal in each battery. Also, Due to the location of the battery, it is only possible for a certain size battery to fit. So, this means that a new battery that will give you 30% longer runtime, is the largest battery that will fit in the allocated space. i'm sure they would have made it an even larger battery, giving you even more runtime, but it is more than likely because Cozmo would get a lot hotter, that they didn't even consider it. So, in conclusion, the chances are that this so-called 600 mah battery is probably twice the price. But not twice the runtime. Now, if you could fit 2 batteries connected in parallel, you would get twice the runtime, common sense and logic dictates this. This also proves that you cannot get twice as many mah from approximately the same size single cell battery. Just trying to help people that really don't understand how Li-Po batteries work.
Hi, I'm not able to find the 503040 lipo where I live, instead I was able to find a 900 mah 603048 lipo battery. It is about 1 mm thicker and 8 mm longer than the 503040. Will it fit or should i look for a different one? Thank you for you help.

Thank you so much for this detailed guide! I am a complete novice at this sort of thing and, thanks to you, I now have a fully working Cozmo again!
Thanks for offering the link to the part AND offer the fix yourself for a very reasonable price. Great video, thanks!
Thanks to you the little digital friend of my son now has again full power. The old battery only had 5 minutes of playtime left. Thumbs up, great video!
Awesome! Great job - it's a good feeling keeping these little things alive. Plus, you know how to do it again if need be.
Wonderful tutorial. Me and my son managed to replace/upgrade the battery in 45 Minutes. Thank you very much!!!
@@TheJohnJudge waiting eagerly for the new vedio if it makes the process much easier. World is a better place with people like you John
Great video. I was able to swap out the battery and the little one is very happy. Thank you.
The hard part is putting it back together. Especially the spring loaded head! Let’s get a video on that!
Thank you so much. Cozmo has resurrected! !
Thanks so much for the video, was able to get my son's cozmo all up and working again!..minus one screw that I have no idea where it came from 😬
@@heatherharless9289 the screw is like a little miniature trophy to prove you did it 😀. Well done 👍
John, it works perfectly thanks to you, kiss from Paris, France.
Thankyou for this tutorial :D I'm not good with my hands at all but this video (+ alot of time) made me fix my cozmo. He's recharging rn, thankyou for this amazing video :)
Excellent. Great work. This makes me happy 😊
Thank you very much for your detailed video. I did the upgrade yesterday and now, Cozmo can play more than 2 hours (132 minutes), it's amazing, thank you again :)
Amazing! I'm always happy to hear when my video has helped somebody out! Thanks for letting me know! best wishes.
Thanks very clear instructions worked a dream. Fantastic. There may be a few people doing this with Digital Dream taking on Anki.
Great tutorial, and works like a charm. Thanks!
I just found my anki cozmo during a recent move after not seeing it for a few years, and the battery is dead. I feel confident in following your instructions, I just wanted to check what the dimensions for the battery are? I don't want to order one that is too big. Thanks!
Thanks to this video, I've fixed the Cozmo too!
This video is a life-line! I'm not that good with soldering, but still managed!
Thanks John, I just replaced the battery with the help of your video. I hope that my Cozmo will be powerfull now! In charge for the moment... :)
Thanks so much for this video. I managed to repair a dodgy Cozmo. Working better than ever now!
john behan excellent! I love hearing stories like this! Well done 👍
I’ve been confirmed by anki (ex)technician that the spring into the head is usueless for any Cozmo of the latest gen, the one with the button on the back. It is tricky to put it back, if your Cozmo has a button just leave it out.
Good to know! Thank you!
Subscribed!
I wish I could send over the pond the cosmos for your repair service. Postage is so terrible.
Good luck with your repair. Perhaps try a local tech repair service (the guys who fix phones, etc) and see if they can install it for you.
I can only say Thank you. this was a very helpful video.
Thank you so much, Cozmo repaired, my daughters think I'm a hero:)
Mathieu Ferry hehe! You ARE a hero! Well done. I love reading comments like this. Thanks.
Thanks @@TheJohnJudge one comment on tha way I did it. Like another comment I saw today, i was not confident enough on my soldering skill to directly attack the circuit. I just cut the existing wires and solder the new battery on them. Worked like a charm.

The cubes are flashing blue but it can't find them. any ideas?
Thanks for the tutorial, very simple procedure.
Thank you so much for this helpful informative video!
Hello thank you for the video i was wondering if you can replace the battery on my cozmo please
Great video, thanks! John, I've mailed you as I'd like to get my son's Cozmo battery sorted.
Could you add a JST connector to remove the need to solder in future replacements
I guess you could, although you would still need to teardown the whole robot each time.
@@TheJohnJudge thanks!
Hey John, not sure if you are still repairing these little guys. If you are, my boy has one that needs a his upgrade.
I tried to unwire the battery but my cozmo got way to much solder on it and it wouldnt come off so i used scissors to cut the battery off and put in my new one i soldered the cables together still red lighting button but loading works im not sure if its entirely broken or i just need to redo that battery wiring somehow
Would love to chat about having you replace battery. Got it all apart but I have never soldered anything
Thank you so much for making this video its helpful.
Hi! Can you please let me know how I can get you to change the battery? Thanks!
Surely its easier to snip and join the wires rather than resolder if people dont have a soldering iron? Haven't tried mine yet...
Can you make a video on how to replace the battery on an Anki overdrive car?
i changed my battery just like in this tutorial and it will claim to charge but when i pulled it off the charger when it said it was done. it would not turn on. i got it to turn on while it was on the charger but nothing would move

Are you in UK?
@@TheJohnJudge no in US.
Hi there. My Cozmo has just died and would love a quote to upgrade his battery. Thank you

The floor sensor on his underside may be damaged. Out your finger over it and hold him upright.
Are you still offering this service? I'd like to send it to u for repair if so! :)
because i had begun to do this, but it was getting a little too stressful.
can you still do the cozmo battery repairs?
Ok I might want you to fix it for me. I've got a couple questions. First, I'd like to know how much the service of you fixing it costs. Also, I disassembled my Cozmo all the way already, so would it be okay if you fixed it from there?

Thank you so much for this it really helped and really works!!!! i really recommend it!!
Hey John, nice video. Would you be able to help with the battery replacement for my sons cosmo. Also, can you let me know the cost?
email me at johnjudge6@gmail.com
That will
Not fit
