I love watching Northern Soulers dance - they're amazing! I remember being told how they used to get through loads of Johnson's baby powder so their shoes would slide on the dance floor. We have a friend who is 70 and he still goes to Northern Soul gigs - he guest DJ's at a lot of them - and he still gets on the dance floor! When Wigan was still open my Mum wouldn't let me go - she said I was too young to travel that far (100+ miles). By the time I was old enough sadly, it had closed down! So it's really lovely to watch videos like this - thanks for sharing on UA-cam!

Changed my mind Richard Street in my opinion was with the Monitors at this time then obviously thr Temptations great track whoever sang this danced Wigan and Blackpool, thank you for post can't stop this feeling over 50 years later!
If you want to, you could. There's still loads of Morthern Soul venues, I'd go myself, but at 66 years old, maybe couldn't do the backdrops and spins like I used to. Still, great memories.

From Motown expert Keith Hughes. It explains everything. It isn't the Contours. It's most likely the demo vocal for the song (titled "Can't Help This Feeling", and written by Marilyn McLeod and Dean & Weatherspoon) which was recorded Sept 12 1968. The track was destined for the Four Tops, and they duly added their vocals, thereby wiping the demo vocal, and their finished version remains in the Vaults, unissued. This version has been around for a while, but the start of the track has been very cleverly added by someone - as I've known it till now, the recording fades in at the beginning, indicating the original source was damaged in some way. No-one I know has ever identified the demo singer convincingly.
Done by Levine ....bleeps are security bleeps once used at motown. AND MR MOTOWN EXPERT IT IS NOT IN THE VAULTS AS IF IT WAS WOULD OF BEEN ON A CD BY NOW ,THIS WAS DONE 15 YEARS AGO

I'll say that I think this is an absolute belter of a tune, and arguments might rage over who it is, so I'll put down what I know and people can make up their own minds.. In the 80's a Motown collector purchased a number of acetates and tapes that had been retrieved from the Woodward building in Detroit. The tracks on the tapes were by various artists and were what are known as 'safety copies' .. meaning you could listen to them but weren't able to move them on as they had 'bleeps' superimposed on the tracks at regular intervals throughout the songs. From what I know these were tapes that writers or producers could take home to listen to and had therefore left the 'security' of the tape library and studio. One of the songs on these multi-artist tapes was ' I Can't Stop This Feeling'. The tape was damaged on the intro but recovered in time before the main vocal started. A number of the long-time Motown collectors listened to it and the conclusion was that it must be a demo, probably by the writer or a random singer, as opposed to any known Motown artist. Someone gave a copy to Ian Levine. who was very excited by it. He 'repaired' the damage by doing a piano studio overdub and proclaimed that it was a Contours recording and he knew because he had worked with them and knew their voices up close and personal, so in his mind there was no doubt. That is hard to disagree with, but of the many Motown experts who listened to the track, only Ian believed it was the Contours.. Most of the experts other than Levine think its more likely that the writer is the singer ... A few believe it could be James or William Weatherspoon.. I have no idea who it is, but its a gem whoever recorded it..

Beverly, we always kept the baby powder in our bowling bags too. Made your approach to the foul line...s m o o t h. You never stood on your head on dry floors that way. I can see it works well for dancing too.

Definitely NOT the Contours. More likely to be The Monitors (or a group that sounds like them), if you listen properly. Also, sounds like an Ian Levine modern recording to me, to me this may not be an old track - if Levine is involved, then possibly recorded in the 90s/00s in Lancashire / Merseyside.
