    As always you thought process is clear well organized and to the point. As a GFX owner I totally concur with your take on this camera. Aside for professional (and I am not) who will need the image quality that this camera delivers for clients purposes, the average enthusiast photographer will have to decide on their own if the whole cost of this system if for them. I decided yes and I am lucky enough I can effort it. I hope many more can as I would love for Fuji to continue and improve the path they started with the GFX.

    Fujifilm really had it with this one for being an enticing option to those who wants to jump the medium format plunge for being more affordable than the competitors. I haven't tried any medium format digital yet but I do shoot 6x6 on 120 film, agreed that there is something subtly different about their looks especially when they get printed it's that certain sharpness and perspective that really stands out. I hope I could get a hand on one of their GFXs someday. That last tip about being safe with is really helpful during these times, stay safe! Can't wait for the hands-on.

    Overall great review. I do take issue with the notion that a large mount enables fast lenses. The reason for a large mount on the Fuji is the necessity for accommodating the image circle needed to cover the sensor. I would note that Leica M series mount is 44 mm yet they manage to offer a f0.95 Noctilux.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  3 роки тому

      Thanks for the kind words, but not sure why you're taking issue with something I didn't say. The size of the throat does not have anything to do with the aperture - but just as a larger aperture allows better defocus backgrounds, so does a larger throat.

    As you displayed 1:1 pixel ratio images on screen, it would have been good if you did that for some pixel shift images. (When I first saw Pentax pixel shift images at 1:1, it was the first time I saw a digital photo at 1:1 looking how I thought a photo should look at 1:1 or when peeping in. So clean & normal. That's when I learnt about interpolation, and that sensors megapixel values are actually more akin to false screen dot values rather than true honest screen pixel values.) It would be good to see what that base quality is like. Thanks for your articulate artful academic review, despite that I can only afford an X-mount system.

    Thank you for posting. I was shooting film on Nikon FG back in the early 80’s. Finally moved to DSLR’s early mid 2005? 2010? I can’t remember. Nikon D40, then quickly D5200 and D300’s. Since then moved back to video JVC HD110 for 24p video, followed by JVC LS300 C4K at 24p video with Atomos Ninja V recorder.. Now Blackmagic Design BMPCC4K. (With speed booster). 0.71 speed booster on my JVC LS300 (super 35mm with MFT mount gives me about a full frame sensor equivalent. Sadly the BMPCC4K is a MFT sensor so the booster gives me a about a DX/APSC size. Why do I care? Not for the reasons everyone drones on about... if you want wider view.. honestly.. just buy a wider lens... want more light? Buy a faster lens or a light. No.. what I’m interested in is vintage lenses or recreations of vintage lenses.. Lensbaby, Lomography retro design lenses as well as some Helios lenses etc. Posssibly other older lenses if I find them and convert the mounts. Most of these lenses their character is in the corners or at least away from the center, usually cropped out with DX/APSC sensors.. so at least a speed booster (focal reducer) is required. But really full frame or larger is desired. Next video camera might be a Z cam with super 35 sensor and MFT mount with speed booster mimicking my JVC LS300 but newer better sensor with of course 12 bit or better raw. Or even their full frame sensor. For pictures. I was thinking the Nikon 780 full frame (DSLR is what I know) vs say a Nikon Z 6II (lower res vs the Z7 II higher res). I would rather have 24mp instead of 60mp in general for lower light in dusk/dawn. Though I have never worked with a medium format / tripod only much. (Back in film days). So this or more llkely the GFX 50s/r or the new versions that are about to be announced. Oddly I Have no interest in the modern super sharp lenses. New Nikon/Canon/Sony full frame mirrorless or even the SG/Fujinon lenses for super sharp. I’m oddly more interested in playing with Lensbaby and Lomography lenses and tracking down more Helios vintage lenses or even their new production lenses. I don’t know enough about the current Sony or Canon line.. luckily because of flange distance all of my Nikon lenses are adaptable to any full frame or mirrorless full frame or larger lenses... i have only a few DX Nikon lenses.. and well... they are ok.. just fine for snaps with D5200... honestly I shoot more casual pics with iphone 11 and later this year probably a iphone 13 Pro for the third lens. Always in your pocket and good software/camera. For artwork though, thinking of full frame or even the Fujifilm GFX 50 or 100 ..... anyone else have some thoughts?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  2 роки тому

      It sounds as if you have specialized needs and tastes - I don't have much experience with the lenses you mention, so hesitate to give guidance. However, most mirrorless mounts will (as you correctly state) have shorter flange distances, so can accommodate a variety of vintage lenses. The largest selection seems to be available for e-mount (Sony) cameras.

    As a non-professional landscape and portrait photographer deciding between buying the 50sII and 100s, other than price and video difference what are your thoughts. For me it's the AF difference. But from this review I get the impression that even the 100s AF is "slow" as I'm guessing compared to FF 35mm. Also will the 50sII have better low light capabilities over the 100s since there are less pixels on the sensor? I love to make big prints (30 X 20 inches) will the 100s provide noticeable detail over the 50sII. Appreciate your insights and thoughts.

    A the beginning of the pandemic I had to make a big switch into video and traded in my GFX100 to help fund the transition-probably my greatest photography regret of all time. Today my needs have shifted again and I cannot wait for my new 100S to arrive. In the mean time, would you consider filming a segment on the difference between the typical 3:2 ratio of most cameras, and the 4:3 of the GFX? Perhaps this is too subtle an issue for UA-cam, but to me the 4:3 framing feels entirely different from just saying a GFX lens has an “equivalent field of view” since every field of view has more vertical framing (or horizontal in portrait orientation) to work with in every shot. This particularly comes in handy with architectural photography I find, and when shooting stitched panoramas, but many compositions benefit from the extra breathing space. I don’t think I have watched a single review which touches on this point. Maybe you’re the one to highlight the advantages.

      That is a subjective question, and depends on your photo workflow. If you are going to use straight out of camera JPEG files, then Fujifilm's film simulations may provide very pleasing results - based on both your preference and the scene. Otherwise, if you are saving RAW files and working with them in a photo editing application, your results will be similar to other cameras, however, you will have more data (16 bits) and more resolution (100Mp) to work with.

    The Nostalgic Negative simulation just doesn't do much for me. Just not much of a change or an improvement. On my Kodak, there's Kodacolor. With that you have the "joyously" nostalgic green & brown pallet to savour. If that doesn't fill your heart with nostalgia (& your head with aching), well I don't know what will. That simulation does get some use. For example, a period piece. If I want my older farm equipment to look "New for '62!" & the pic taken in '62, that is the ticket. If I want all the colors of the rainbow to flatline, that is also the ticket. Yes sir, even the histogram shrugs its shoulders with that one. :v)
