  • 4 very nice mouthpieces are compared here, beginning with the CKB 7C. A really undertated mouthpiece, to my way of thinking. Deep cup, relaxed throat maybe a loose 27 or possibly a 26 drill. Nice weight, great gold plating... Not too much to dislike here. :) Followed by a Bach 7 (no letter); this is the deeper cupped 7. Unique piece, maybe a bit tighter than its supposed to be, I measure it at a 27 drill (supposed to be 26?). Anyway, a surprisingly nice piece to play; definitely deeper than the 7C. Next is a Reeves 42B; an easy blow, and it produces a big, dark sound; I need to play this one more. Lastly, a Dennis Wick 4. A bit larger diameter than the others, and a very nice piece too. Enjoy! :)

Thanks for commenting! I was showing my wife where I missed those notes in the upper range, and I laughed so hard watching myself. :) Gotta enjoy life. :) Playing high on big mouthpieces is not the smartest thing I've done, I'm afraid. :) Take care ~ always good to hear from you.

Nice mouthpiece review, Jonathan! Again, audio coming in loud and clear. Was curious what the piece of equipment is just left of your mixer? Looks nice!

Good question! :) That is a digital recorder, got it recently and will use it to sequence my keyboard, drum, bass, strings sounds and more from the keyboard. Primarily, I’ll use it to arrange hymns with a jazz slant, then record vocals and horn to. Very time consuming, though. :)

In the early 2000's, I was working a lot with a church in Florida. I had almost 200 songs sequeneced; keyboard, drums, bass, strings, brass, harp, etc. It's fun - but it takes time. At least 90 minutes per song, and that's if you're in a groove, everything's going right, and its an easy song. Today, it would take me a couple of days to do a song. I'll get faster if I can do it consistently but with flying and family, it's very tough. I've almost decided it'll have to wait a couple of years until I retire or slow down. :) The key is finding a system that works, that enables comfort, and not losing your touch. I'm rough on all 3 right now...lol. The recording piece was only $400 used on Reverb; it's a good piece, too; the Tascam DP-32SD Recorder.

@@JonathanMilam1 Wow, 200 songs..incredible! I know what you mean about lack of time. I'm lucky if I get over an hour a day to play or record. That is a nice unit for a very good price. I have a tascam digital recorder also but it's a smaller less expensive unit. When I use it I take the card and enhance the sound with Audacity which is a free and easy to use DAW. I have a hard time syncing the audio with the video though. Sometimes I just record right onto that app you told me about with my Ipad. The sound is pretty decent. It's a lot of fun though fooling around with this stuff!

My friend who left me his horn had several mouthpieces included. A Blessing 3FL, a Vincent Bach 3C, and a Jeftone Al Hirt Model D. I have no idea the significance of any of them. My Old Olds has the 7C that I have always slapped into the horn just to make a sound. I think there were a couple more in the case but that is on a top shelf in the back and I'm too short to get it at the moment.

Rick; those are some vintage pieces you're talking about. I'm heading over now with a little step-ladder. :) (just a little humor!)

Cool, thanks! The 42B is a great piece. Well, all of these are, but I really like the Reeves too. :)

I use a Dennis Wick 4 on my cornet and recently started with the Bach 3C on my trumpet, love both of them to death but I feel the 7 is a bit big now but yeah thanks for the review

I recently purchased a Bach 7. It's feels a little tight..like you said it has that brightness and roundness to it due to the cup. I wonder what you think between a Bach 7 and 7c

I have several Bach 7C's, and every time I play one of them I think, 'Ouch!! That is NOT a comfy rim!'. :) The 7C will give a little mellower sound, the 7 a bit more brilliant. Honestly, I'd consider getting a used Curry at Trumpetherald.com in the Marketplace. Much more comfy rim. New, you can get a Curry mouthpiece for $60 or so at Ebay, used often for $30-$40. Just food for thought. :)

The Wick 4 is a copy of a Viennese rotary trumpet mouthpiece that belonged to Elgar Howarth. It is pretty deep and a bit V shaped at the bottom. You are sounding good. I have a Bach 7A cornet mouthpiece that came with an old cornet and that is a lot deeper than the standard 7.

Gordon; Great to hear from you. I'd read this about the Wick being a copy. Nice mouthpiece, in my opinion. A bit bigger diameter than I like, but I do like what it can do. Strange, I've never had a Bach A cup. Lots of C's, and B's, but never an A. I like the D; nice modified V. Now you've got me wondering about an A... :)

@@JonathanMilam1 The A models are popular with cornet players who have pitch problems on the Wick mouthpieces that have the big throats, especially on the smaller bore cornets. Check them on the Kanstul mouthpiece comparator (its still working).

I can imagine that quite well; the intonation benefit. I think some guys exacerbate bad intonation on a flugel with a mouthpiece that's way too big.
