Sailboat Life on the Hard is HARD!!!

  • Sailboat Life on the Hard was some of the hardest Sailboat jobs that I've done so far. I chose the Napa Valley Marina over all the other Marinas in the San Francisco Bay area because they were the only one that would allow me to stay on my sailboat while I was doing the work. If you live on your sailboat like I do, this is kinda important!
    Super cool boat sled that they use to haul your boa out of the water, and then it's sanding, Sanding, SANDING! I hate sanding.
    Got 3 coats of expensive bottom coat on the bottom of Dagny. Managed some basic engine maintenance, and managed to get it all done in 9 days. Total cost was about $1700!
    Big THANK YOU to the Napa Valley Marina. Their staff was super respectful and answered all my dumb questions.

    Great job on your bottom paint. It's good to know about the great folks at the Napa Valley marima.

    The bottom job looks amazing!
    Before haul out, we close the raw water through-hull. When you splash, remember to open the through-hull before starting the engine. Tip: hang your start key on the valve and you'll remember to open the through hull.

      Why do you close the raw water intake? I didn't do that. What did I mess up 😬

      @@EdwardSeatonSailing I noticed you didn’t get a reply about closing the raw water intake. The only thing I can come up with is that since you changed your impeller on the hard, closing the valve first might keep the water in the hose. Then you may not need to prime the pump when you put her back in the water. This is just a guess because the only time I changed mine it was in the water and then there’s a much bigger reason to close it!

    Nice job. Watch the normal water discharge. Keep a spare impeller and gasket on board. If they run dry they get hot and will need replaced.

    G'day from Australia.
    Over hear we use both travel lifts and trailers.
    I think its allso were the marinas are located. If the marina is on reclamed land then the shoeline would be higer and thats when travel lifts come in on the other hand if the lay of the marina is natral, and the tideal height is low than the lift trailers are used. having worked on an slipway it was explaned to me.

      Tides! That makes sense. Is one cheaper than the other?

      @@EdwardSeatonSailing Not realy. You should shop around before slipping an boat as cost depends on overall length and beam of the boat and if you have an pair of davits and an bough sprit thats added on as well. Often thuther from town the cheaper the yard costs will be but then you have to go to town for food and supplies, the delervry will have added cost as well. I can add allso that taxies are very expensive. So it allso depends on your owen transport. Some marinas hear in Australia have car parking fees. So my advice would be to shop around cheack out whats going on in the area than deside if its worth the expensess of haulling out there or go somewere else.
      I hope i have gived you some idears for the next time.

      @svlittlegem24 no, I meant, is a travel lift or a trailer more expensive for the marina... like you were opening a marina which way would you go?

    • @svlittlegem24
      @svlittlegem24 Рік тому +1

      @@EdwardSeatonSailing About the same. just depends on wear you go. Like i said before, shop around before you lift the boat out. The marina you were in may have aditaionol fees like inviromental, liveaboard and utilities & security gate key has an cost.

    Some boatyards don’t have ramps close I’d say.

    • @EdwardSeatonSailing
      @EdwardSeatonSailing  Рік тому

      True, but I would imagine that putting a ramp in would be cheaper than building a 2-sided pier that one those boat lift gantry things drive out on, and then theirs the gantry itself. Those can't be cheap. It's a mystery. I'm going to email this video to the Napa Valley Marina. Maybe they'll just tell me. I should have asked when I was there but I had a million other things on my mind. Thanks for leaving a comment! Appreciate it!

      @@EdwardSeatonSailing I imagine it’s basically determined by practicality and what is actually available. At what I’ve seen as older marinas I’ve seen more ramp type infrastructure: there is a really old yard in San Diego Bay that had train track rails going into the water and a system of cars to pull the boats out and scoot them around the yard. But with newer construction and boats being bigger, more than 50 feet, and drydocks being for much much larger ships, the travelift (that’s what those hanging contraptions are called) option seems really prevalent. But, yes, please ask around. More info would be enlightening.

    Changing your impeller had to be done anyway but it will not stop your drip... When water drips from behind the water pump, it means the shaft is scored (worn down). You can fix this with a new water pump rebuild kit and get some emmery sanding paper to smooth out the the scored grooves on the water pump shaft.

    • @EdwardSeatonSailing
      @EdwardSeatonSailing  Рік тому +1

      Hmm. Well, I ran the engine for another 4 hours after leaving Napa Valley and didn't notice any drips. I think it might have been the old paper seal gasket thing 🤔 not sure but I'll keep my eye on it and do the water pump kit fix if it starts up again. Thanks for the heads up!

      @scripteaze that was for the lift, on the hard storage for 9 days, Equipment rental, and bottom paint. From what I can tell, it's the best deal in the Bay area if you're willing to do the work.
