    Oh, man, another one I've never heard but instantly love. I hear a familiar short theme hear - it's just a small part of this beautiful, short piece, but to me, it's kind of like her "stamp" , or her "seal" - this piece is just SO Florence Price- it couldn't be anyone else. I'm getting so familiar with her, now, and I can't even say how beautiful it is to have a composer that I've only even *known* about for maybe 2 years - and an *American* one, and a such a *wonderful* one.

      Firstly, she's "black." Secondly, she's a woman. Thirdly, the Caucasians write their narrative. The End. 😊

    She certainly deserves being heard. The music is powerful, emotional, and highly entertaining!
    It would be wonderful if more people were familiar with Ms. Price. She had a great talent and something important to contribute.

    I am moved to tears by this piece. OMG, where is the rest as was asked by doogienahnah? I feel so ashemed because I have put my composing on hold for the bast 7 years playing World of Warcraft. I have not been inspired until now to run back begging the Most High to forgive me and fill my cup again with this kind of beauty.

    Enchanting...I heard it on WFMT and closed my eyes to listen. I was amazed to find out a Woman wrote it, and then after all was said and done, a Black Woman in 1934. Wow! I'm so grateful I stumbled across this piece. I've order the complete Concert and cannot wait to hear it again.

    Very Beautiful. Economical and great timing. F.B. Price certainly knew what she was doing. Thanks much.

    This is music of exquisite elegance and authority. It MUST be heard wherever classical music is played. And as other people have commented - where's the rest of this brilliant composer's work?

      This is a horribly late response, but the Fort Smith Symphony just last year released fairly good recordings of her 1st and 4th Symphonies and in 2017, Yale's orchestra recorded a decent rendition of her 3rd.

      Listening to classical music for 30 years now, I did not hear of William Grant Still until 2015, and I just heard of William Dawson and Florence Price within the past month - all Black composers. That doesn't seem a coincidence to me. I love the music of all three composers!

      @@lancepeterson2099 Its no coincidence--keep digging there is so much out there. Dig and share! I am also just amazed at what I am finding--can't believe how much great music is new to me and not at all new!

    From the New Yorker: February 5, 2018: "In 2009, Vicki and Darrell Gatwood, of St. Anne, Illinois, were preparing to renovate an abandoned house on the outskirts of town. The structure was in poor condition: vandals had ransacked it, and a fallen tree had torn a hole in the roof. In a part of the house that had remained dry, the Gatwoods made a curious discovery: piles of musical manuscripts, books, personal papers, and other documents. The name that kept appearing in the materials was that of Florence Price. The Gatwoods looked her up on the Internet, and found that she was a moderately well-known composer, based in Chicago, who had died in 1953. The dilapidated house had once been her summer home."
    She was self-described as having two strikes against her. One was being a woman, the other having negro blood in her veins.

    Beautiful music but please do not overlook two BRITISH composers of African descent: Amanda Ira Aldridge (aka Montague Ring) (1866-1956), daughter of the African American Shakesperean actor Ira Aldridge, and Avril Coleridge-Taylor (1903-1998), daughter of the Black British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. Both Amanda and Avril began composing in the early part of the last century, and their stories are included in Stephen Bourne's award winning book Black Poppies - Britain's Black Community & the Great War (The History Press, 2014) with rare photos of them. Neither has their music released on CD but I have heard some of Amanda's music on an old recording and its sounds similar to Ms Price's music.

    Image creating a piece that was only one movement long but people still split it into movements. (The performance was really good, but I wanted to harass).

    un des plus beau concerto pour piano que j'ai entendu: un mouvement qui résume toute une oeuvre (oeuvre: c'est pas facile à écrire ce genre de truc , je compatis avec tous les francophones ou ceux qui écrivent en français😊)

    She wrote well, very well, while for its time, 1934. there is nothing remotely contemporary sounding about this music. It is very 'non-news' music for its time.

    • @GeorgeHenderson
      @GeorgeHenderson 4 роки тому

      True enough for 1934, yet posterity cares less about precedence and more about artistry as distance increases. Both Glenn Gould writing on Richard Strauss and Alex Ross writing on Price herself have suggested ways to best appreciate the anachronistic in music.
