    Huckel’s rule is the most confusing and most tedious step in figuring out if a molecule is aromatic or antiaromatic. This video shows you how to calculate Huckel’s rule to ensure you ‘get’ the math, followed by a time-saving shortcut so that you DON’T actually have to DO the math every time.

    Note: At 4:08, I state that cyclooctatetraene appears to be planar. Even though it might appear that way, the molecule actually takes a non-planar tub shape. This fact disqualifies it from following the conditions for aromaticity. Cyclooctatetraene is a non-aromatic compound.

      A 2pi electron system gives n =0 that's anti - aromatic I think that's an exception to your generality

    I doubt that the last aromatic compound is just an example for more elucidating huckel's rule and indeed is hypothetic , in other words, does not exist in real world. Lastly , thank you so much for all of your videos , I appreciate them highly.

      I've never tested that in a lab but simply presented as a drawing for the sake of showing a large example. Pen and paper chemistry is always so much easier and smoother ;)

    Mam today was my test, there were four questions regarding Aromaticx and non aromaticx, I use this your trick, and all are correct answers..     I think,Your 3rd example that is cyclooctatetrene is a non aromatic compound. Bcz it is stable in tub-shape which is non-planar.So resonance is absent in this case.

    @4:14 how would a carbon do a 135° angle? This is no way planar.

      She mentions "the way it's drawn right now, it appears to be planar". So based off the rules she's gone over up to this point, it passes all 4 criteria. In the next video, she'll cover antiaromatic and non-aromatic. If you model this molecule, it is actually boat-shaped or non-planar (which breaks the 2nd rule). New chem students wouldn't know that by looking at it so she just breezed over it as an example but you will later learn about what makes anti and non-aromatic structures.

    It is egregious that this video describes cyclooctatetraene as planar. It takes a tub formation to reduce angle strain resulting in no p orbital overlap, and thus no conjugation.
