2018: Modelling Year In Review

  • A (way too long) overview of my last year in modelling. It's been an alright one- a couple of failed projects right at the end not withstanding, I've made big improvements on pretty much every aspect of the hobby, especially painting and cockpit weathering. Actual realistic weathering is still rough, but I'm improving there two. There are a bunch of different things I'm wanting to get done next year, the biggest being the American Cat's series (minus the Tomcat). I also want to build up a better backlog, enough to get through between 6-12 months of posting, since my ability to build models could be halted for that amount of time next year.

    A lot more builds then I was able to build in 2018. Keep having fun.

    I thoroughly enjoy your videos and I have to say that the builds you finished last year and the projects you have in mind for this year are just fantastic! Really looking forward to all the videos you can give us. 👍 🎄 👌

    Your going to be a busy boy next year fella, would love to see that bulldog finished, building armour in my opinion is the best way to learn how to weather objects, planes are a piece of piss after you nailed that but I understand you prefer aircraft. Lots to look forward too happy new mate

      Thanks man, and I hope so. I will certainly make a reveal video of the bulldog once its done. I've been put off from armor to this point for a couple of reasons- I think they generally have less interesting paint options, and they cost a lot more than the planes do. I am interested in plenty of armor through, so who knows. Maybe I'll do a few more. (Keep your eyes out for a 1/144 Ratte maybe this year.)

      I admit I have more aircraft kits than armour, for myself the tank or should I say ground vehicles is just the a focus point for dioramas and figures, but tbh I just find planes hard to display, and the options are very limited ie airfield Tarmac runway or a carrier and I don't see the point hanging planes from a celing as you can't see the model.
      But with ground vehicles you can put them in a colourful scene. Cost of the kits are quite silly if you ask me and I totally agree 100%
      But if everyone had the same tastes the world would be boring as hell

    I thought you'd feature a Strike Witches aircraft because of the thumbnail, you got me good there.
    Anyways, if you wish to save yourself the rescribing part on the F9F, get the Trumpeter kit. Don't hesitate to buy the Tamiya F-14, I've read only sterling reviews for it, and it's readily available from Sprue Brothers or Hobby Link Japan.
    Good luck on your last highschool year.

      Thanks for the advice. I can’t do the f9f, (limited budget), but I’ll defiantly look into the Tamiya F-14 at some future date. I’d have already gotten it if I knew I’d have time to build it lol.

    I've been wanting to do the same thing with the grumman Cats! So far I have an F6F and an F8F. They are awesome planes.
    I also have an old Monogram F14 that I'm building as a top gun ship. Besides the raised panel lines and the slightly warped wings, it's a somewhat decent kit. Only cost me $8.

      If I can find one at a similar price that might be what I get just to fill the space. Ideally it'd be a Tamiya's new F-14D, but... my wallet can only take so much.

    Hey, you talk a lot about a model building forum, which one is that? i need help finding/making a decal sheet. i looked on finescale but the last post in aircraft was in october so i dont know if it's still alive.
    any help is appreciated

      Finescale Forums is what I'm usually on. However, if you are looking for something like that try reddit.com/r/modelmakers . They'll be helpful, and there are always a couple hundred people online.

      That is an incredible plane! I kinda doubt that decals exist for it- you’ll probably have to piece it together with generic numbers/letters and maybe homemade or stenciled “West End” name. I didn’t see any actual ART on the nose, so you can probably do it yourself without too much hassle.

    i have just tried my first oil wash and it ruined my spitfire. the acrylic paints were dissolved by the revell enamel paint thinner for some forsaken reason.
    i covered the model with revell aqua matt clear (only matt clear i have) and the oil wash with eanmel thinner just dissolved it. when i was wiping the wash off the paint began coming off. it is my first air brushed kit and it was looing excellet before the wash ruined the paint

    • @TheWaggishAmerican
      @TheWaggishAmerican  5 років тому

      How long did you let the clear coat dry before you tried the wash?
      Another question, what primer were you using if any? If you didn't have any gloss layer it is possible that the thinners soaked through the paint and activated the primer beneath.
      Finally, how exactly did you try to remove the oils? How long did you let the wash stay on the model before you started to remove it?
      For the third question, I'll quickly outline the best way I've found to do an oil wash- the number one thing is to not let it sit too long. You don't want it to dry and solidify. Ideally, let it sit 15-40 min (depending on how thin it is- thicker takes longer), take some cloth from something like an old t-shirt, and rub it off in the direction of airflow. If you've waited a decent amount of time, most of this can be done without any thinner. (but you HAVE to do it on a gloss surface.) If it's a bit harder to get off, lightly dampen that cloth in thinner, squeeze it mostly dry, and do the same.
      Also (and this is just general advice), you really shouldn't do washes on flat coats. They work better in all regards on a glossy surface. The flow better into cracks, and are much easier to remove from the surface. On a flat surface, the wash can work into the paint and permanently darken it.

      @@TheWaggishAmerican im really new to airbrushing and where i live moddeling supplies arent avalible, so revell aqua and some tamiya paints is all i get acces to. i dont have any primer and only use acrylic paints. i did wait at least 18 hours to wait for the clear to dry. i did use a matt coat though (i read aomewhere that matt coats are better for washes, dont know where) i used water color washes before (just dissolve some water colors in water and put it on the model, wait for it to dry and wipe ot off with a damp paper towel
      ( this has worked very well before), so i tried oil paints, but the revell enamel thinner DOES dissolve acrylic paints and after like 4 minutes it looked dry and i tried to wipe it but it was sticky and didnt come off at all. it dissolved the clear coat and the paint below

      @@bodek you should have a clear gloss applied before washes
      Edit: a lacquer type of clear gloss to protect the paint underneath

    • @TheWaggishAmerican
      @TheWaggishAmerican  5 років тому +1

      @@bodek Huh. Well, I've never used Revell Aqua paints, so I'll take your word on that. Everything else you did seems alright, so it must be something with the paint. I'd stick with the watercolor wash if that has been working for you. If you really want to give an oil wash another try, see if you can get a battle of Tamiya clear. Not a spray can- it loos just like a normal tamiya paint bottle. Thin it about 60/40 thinner/paint, and use a layer or two of that as a gloss coat.
      the other thing that could help you out- get some plastic spoons, cut a couple lines into them. Then practice with different combinations of paints, clears, etc. on those spoons before committing to a model.

      It's not the paints I use revell, it's the enamel thinner, he should have used white spirit/mineral spirit. It's a noob mistake I done the same years ago on a hms victory and melted the hull 😜
